A beautifully animated sci-fi drama that keeps itself fun despite the melodrama. The ending leaves much to be desired but is excusable as this is just a prequel for the manga series. While the stylized character designs might be a bit too much for some, the wicked mech designs more than make up for it.
Incredible animation, a fantastic orchestral score, some fun moments and great voice acting are more than enough to make up for this film's confusing and hard to follow plot, and lack of originality in the sci-fi setting.
