Nell Tiger Free is excellent in this movie. She plays confusion and ànguish drawing you further into the story. The tone of the movie is perfect and links well directly to the original movie. There are some homages to the original movie that do feel a little unnecessary, but this does not detract overall.
I really enjoyed this film as a fan of the original and will recommend it as an extension to the original narrative and story. Go see it.
Went in to this with little expectations and not much knowledge of the originals. Was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality, performances and fun of the film and ended up having a great time watching!
This is way more effective than it has any right to be considering how it was marketed. It doesn't focus on the supernatural aspect, though there is a hint of that, rather it centers on the suggested and the implied, which only emphasizes the grotesque nature of it all. Less about the devil and his crimes, and more about the horrors committed by those with the devil inside them and the people, particularly woman, used and sacrificed on the altar of their ambitions.
Rated a Connor 10, normal 7.7
A good horror movie that features excellent photography and some really well done horror scenes. The story is interesting, but very predictable, especially when you get to about halfway through the film. Overall the movie entertained me a lot, apart from the third act which I found rushed and a little bit messy
Was having deja vu the first half, given I recently saw Immaculate. Decent prequel. Several of the more memorable scenes felt forced in.
A remake in prequel clothing. It's labelled as a prequel to The Omen but for most of the movie I was questionning that because it plays itself as a remake (until the ending). Now here's a hot take: I enjoyed this a little more than the original. The focus on the father instead of the antichrist in the original was such a turn-off but The First Omen doesn't replicate that mistake which is a big part of why I enjoyed this more. One thing it does replicate though is that it's too long and a little too slow in parts.
I watched this and Immaculate as a double feature and it made me appreciate The First Omen even more, the difference in quality is flagrant and this is the better movie on every level. Nell Tiger Free obliterates Sydney Sweeney out of the park, she was born for this type of role, she's so captivating and every emotion was believable—an amazing performance! The scene where she's screaming like she's in Possession was so intense I stopped breathing. Her character has layers too, I appreciated the night life story arc.
I'm so disappointed they recycled some of the kills from the original, they were done masterfully here but why replicate them if not to make them better? They're not! One thing they're missing is the over-the-top score to accompany them. Still, they're grotesque and bloody, the birthing scenes were hard to watch and memorable.
Great cinematography all around, beautiful imagery, nice editing, beautiful costumes, killer atmosphere, good tension, not that many cheap jumpscares, creepy but not that scary. The twist was so damn obvious but it plays it as a seriously dramatic event so that was a total miss but it serves the story right. The ending is also predictable, it's everything I thought it was going to be going into the movie. What ultimately brings this movie down is the need to tie it to the original trilogy, I think it would have been better off as an original spin-off.
Petition to put Nell Tiger Free in every horror movie!
If you want to see pro-abortion feminist propaganda disguised as a prequel. Here it is.
It's a pretty decent horror movie
It’s always unexpected when someone takes one of these shit reboots/cash grabs but makes something cool out of it. Well directed with a great lead performance and disturbing imagery, outside of some standard prequel eye rolly shit.
genuinely unsettling, one of the very very few horror films that gave me a deep primal unease. I personally think the scene showing the evil was unnecessary and cheesy, but aside from that little detail, new favorite religion themed movie!
Very good movie i like it :wink:
I compare this to Immaculate purely due to its release being around a similar time to this film, not only due to its content. I would say those who are fans of Immaculate for its short, sweet (irony), and horrific scenes, you may be disappointed with this movie. The First Omen follows a similar story, however, it is a slow burn, a tad predictable, and is repetitive at times. I wouldn't put it on a pedestal, however, previous Omen "franchise" movies have disappointed way more than this one.
A lot of theatrical catholic church horror tend to be rushed attempts to feed horror fanatics into the theater. To me, this one is not it. What a prequel! The film has a good balance of jump scares, body horror, and haunting intensity that deserves to be watched in the theater.
This was competently made, but it was a little boring and not really that scary like at all. I also really didn’t feel or care much for the characters. Luckily, I don’t remember much from this franchise so like it was semi interesting and like I wouldn’t complain if they made another one of these, but it didn’t stand out and immaculate was bit better.
I wanted to like this film, but it drags for most of the film, the dialogue is not interesting, and visually its not very strong. The ending was OK, even though it made no sense. The trailer sold this as a much more retro vibe!
Just a stupendous film honestly I was longing for a horror movie of this caliber
And nell Tiger so good she kills it every time I see her in a role.
Poorly made prequel. The whole plot is contradicting the original, I mean it's the big thing about Damien that his mother is a jackal right? I mean I get if you decide to change things, but at least acknowledge it. Other than that it's just full of cliches and just a horrible ending.. watch immaculate instead.
Mayor plot hole: the movie takes place in 1971, but Daddy Cool, released in 1976, can be heard in the disco scene.
I liked it. But I can't forget its name, "The first Omen", and how it ends, the last words:
If it's a precuel, it makes no sense that Damien's mother is a woman. It's a big deal, really big. This makes me give 6/10 when I was thinking on a 7/10 movie.
Waste of time. Cliché jump scares and boring plot.
I have to say, it really pulls you into a dark world. The plot is good (for a remake, a reboot, idk), and the actors do a great job (Margaret and the Cardinal are top). Creepy atmosphere really amps up the tension.
Be warned, some scenes are pretty gory and might be too much for you, adding a raw, intense edge to the horror.
That said, the movie isn't perfect and might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Doesn't have much in common with Omen. It drags for the most part. It's similar to "Immaculate" but the "Immaculate" was better imo, but both movies are not great.
I saw a billboard for this movie, claiming how scary it is. And scary it was. Scary how bored I was for the whole two hours.
But to be fair. The movie is well done. Some good actors, decent acting, and the directing was fine. It's not a bad movie technically. It's just so boring. You can have a stretched out movie, but you have to captivate the viewer at least a bit, to justify that runtime (think of the movie The Wailing or Svaha, which are btw. both much much better than this one). There is nothing here like that.

One Flew Over the Crucifix more like
When you respect a franchise with great affection, you can do masterful things like this. Arkasha Stevenson's film debut couldn't be better. Classic religious horror, but not outdated at all, with a solid plot, excellent cinematography and some extremely disturbing scenes that keep the viewer uncomfortable but without blinking. And what can we say about a Nell Tiger Free who has a very high score, in a genre in which she evidently performs with great ease. The film, although not perfect, adds quality to the saga, unlike other recent films in other franchises that disrespect the original material.
I've seen this movie 2 weeks ago when it was called “Immaculate”. Also if you're horror movie is 2hrs long it better be at least 8/10
Predictable, with a few decent scenes, and some great, creepy acting by the main nun Nell Tigerlilly.
A beautiful looking film, especially that 70s Rome backdrop. some cool creepy camera work and a couple jumps scares (butpst were just LOUD NOISES)
Unfortunately it takes too many parts from it's now sequels to feel fresh.
feels so much like it was supposed to be a reboot, but they chickened out of it for the last 10 minutes
I haven't seen The Omen (1976) or any of the other ones after that. First, the few positives are the whole movie is beautifully shot throughout credit to the cinematographer and as for the lead actress Nell Tiger Free as Margaret, she was good and anyone who watched her on Servant, you'll probably enjoy her performance. This movie is similar to Immaculate which was also released about a month ago but this is disappointing with it being way too long, repetitive, a little bit predictable and kinda weak for a horror.
The First Omen is like sex with the devil: it has its moments and looks really cool, but goes on a little too long.
In what must be a remake of last week's Immaculate (both films have an American woman going to Italy to become a full-fledged nun and work in a kind of a group home [hospice for one, orphanage for the other] where they don't speak the language and have to worry about strange rituals happening in their buildings...), The First Omen comes out on top as the better film.
The scares are about the same and the third act is the best in both, but the director and cinematographer work together to make a movie that has the decency to at least try and avoid the same clichés as every other horror film, and it looks cool while doing it.
Nothing really stands out, however, in The First Omen and what are supposed to be twists are so obvious that I kept waiting for the film to catch up to what I knew was going to happen, but at least I got to look at some pretty pictures while I waited for that to happen.
A masterpiece, a fantastic story with a surprising script, wonderful acting, scenes and settings that enrich the movie even more and the soundtrack is a show apart.
Like the spawn of the beast himself, The First Omen should have been aborted. The majority of defects began in the writing stage, but they certainly did not end there.

How can this be a prequel when Damien was born from a hound? Is it a joke?
