The Fall 2019

[MUBI] The hunt for man. Masks that show the inexpression of... a nightmare, perhaps. "The sleep of reasons produces monsters". Goya inspires Glazer. A rope that falls into the void. A man who hangs on it. 86 seconds of suspense. And the tense music of Mica Levi.

A horror short that packs such a punch in its 5-minute runtime. This one feels like a tease but it's short and unsettling nonetheless, thanks to the score and the masks which are viscerally terrifying.‎

Jonathan Glazer has, as you would expect from a man who honed his craft directing music videos, a mastery of conveying an awful lot in brief images. In this short, a feeling of utter dread and almost total hopelessness is beautifully put across in less than ten minutes. A man is shaken down from a tree by masked figures who take a quick photo before casting him down a well with a rope around his neck. This nightmarish scenario is made all the worse by the segue from quick, jumpy shots to the film’s most horrible: fixed on the rapid unspooling of the rope as the man falls, held for an uncomfortably long time as Mica Levi’s score increases in intensity. A little masterpiece.
