It would appear that most people hate this film because they are unable to grasp the inner concepts that this film was built around while appealing to a braindead audience who are easily amused - most people just see the stupidity. Let's attempt to break it down, though.
Our heroes in the film are Emojis, but it really doesn't matter what they are, but rather, what they represent. Like Inside Out, Toy Story, Winnie the Pooh, or virtually any other kids film, the main characters are simply personifications. Their outward expressions and the world's expectations for them to keep those expressions is social commentary on how people are supposed to act in public, or in their professions. The Meh emoji represents inner turmoil at believing there's more out there than the safe expectations of society, he is an explorer, and societies differences give him depression.
People have also complained about the plot about needing to reach Dropbox. Dropbox is yet another metaphor, just masked in something relevant to the setting. Exactly like Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings. It's an adventure story with plenty of heartfelt, meaningful messages and diverse, colorful characters
This is Man vs self, man vs. faith, man vs destiny, man vs society, and man vs industry, depending on which character is focused on. The characters are well-rounded, as they all have individual character goals, motivations, and growth, all of which aren't without healthy flaws that act as obstacles to get them where they need to be right away.
Hate for this movie makes no sense to me. It's relevant, the visuals and animation is pretty great, and a lot of thought was put into making it smart all around
I really like this movie for what it is. Rather enjoyable and gives quite a few chuckles. Well worth seeing.
I saw a rough screener, and it was rough.
Despite the fact that only 25% of the animation was actually complete, and almost 20% was just story-boards with audio, the story is pretty weak.
Without getting into spoilers, an emoji goes on an adventure through various apps on a phone. While the different worlds of the different apps was entertaining and some of the humor was fun, the plot was generic and lacking.
Once you get past the obvious issues with the premise of this film... it still remains a terrible movie.
Awful story, pandering script and the only voice actor who even tries is TJ Miller and that's just because he wants you to forget his sexual abuse arrest.
Make no mistake, The Emoji Movie is out to manipulate your children and destroy their appreciation of cinema just to make a buck.
I don't understand why all the hate? I mean, it's a movie about emojis, how did you expect it to turn out?
I would describe this movie as quirky; I don't think it was meant to be hilarious and maybe that's what people were expecting?
I for one thought it was quite amusing. Loved the puns and the visually stunning world inside the phone, that little trick with the Instagram photos in particular was brilliant.
Moronic movie. This is what we have for children to watch now days is this trash?
I have only one word for this movie: „Meh!“
Not quite poop but far from crying laughter, there is only one emoji to describe this animated movie. Meh!
Literally, for me the only good thing about this movie it's the music
3/10 movie. 10/10 memes.
Sir Patrick Stewart is poop. There are multiple jokes about this. (Insert poop emoji) Overall the movie is meh. :| Haha get it ;) (That was funnier than most of the movie)
someone please end my life
Heard so many bad reviews of this film that I wasn't expecting much, but wow it is so much better than people give it credit for. It was really punny! Clever as well, had a Wreck it Ralph vibe about it and I loved how it fits in with this generation of smart phone users as they wander from instagram to facebook; and bump into internet trolls and spam! Really funny, worth a watch!
Well with all It's bad reviews this wasn't a bad film and I didn't expect much and It's jokes were so bad that they were good. Be yourself, be whatever emoji fits you, one that finds you and don't let anyone tell you what you can't be.
No soul, no cool, no good. Awful.
Bad, bad, baaaaaaad!! Nasty & awful
I really don’t understand the amount of hate this movie gets. It’s certainly not the best movie out there but there are definitely worse. It’s a decent little movie with an alright storyline, comparable to Wreck It Ralph.
All in all it’s a fun little movie to watch with the kids!
Funny how no one ever left a boring & overused comment about not rating a movie before it comes out on this page.
Honestly the only notable thing I remember about this movie is the eggplant being in the least used emojis on a TEEN BOYS phone!! That thing would 1000% be right up top with the crying laughing emoji and peach emoji
Boring at times
Forgettable

….meh.
I’m amazed Patrick Stewart was the poop emoji.
4K UHD Blu-ray is surprise. Lot of nice and clever ideas is there. I like it. Picture is clean, short and colorful as movie for kids. Sound is good too. Sometimes unexpected things brings unpredictable results.

"How do you do, fellow kids" the movie.
Excruciatingly bad. It's proper rubbish.
Based on the reputation of this, I knew it was going to be utter tripe. I always wait to watch myself to form my own opinion, but there is no doubt about it - 'The Emoji Movie' is truly awful. It's such a lazy attempt, there is absolutely no creativity and there doesn't seem to have been that much care put into this. How about that product placement, also?!
I will say I do like the idea, you could probably create a fine film with it. However, man did they get the execution incredibly wrong. That's also not good given the cast performances, all of which are quite pathetic. In fairness, they don't exactly get much to work with.
I'm someone who likes James Corden, but he is terrible here. As is T.J. Miller, while Anna Faris and Maya Rudolph are forgettable. I was disappointed (sorta) not to see more of Patrick Stewart's character, given how much I've heard in recent years; he's barely in it.
It's a painful watch, even with a run time of just 86 minutes.
The only thing this movie truly has it going for is the (insultingly) beautiful animation. The visuals are stunning, everything is bright and colorful (for a kids movie, at least), and the emoji designs... are not really that bad.
With that being said, watching this movie from start to finish was thoroughly unenjoyable. The writing was some of the worst I've ever seen, the screenplay is horrible, the plot is bland & repetitive, the characters are annoying/forgettable, and the humor.. my god, the humor. The only, and I mean the only times I've at least had a smile on my face was right at the beginning where we see that that the text emoticons are considered the elderly in their universe, and the Just Dance scene, as I love Just Dance. Also, what is with this movie and playing "Feel This Moment" by Pitbull and Christina Aguilera twice? I personally love the song but man, why couldn't they just pick a different song for the end?
Overall, this movie really is as bad as everyone said it was back in 2017. Don't show this to your kid(s). Show them Wreck-It-Ralph, The Lego Movie, or Inside Out instead. They'll have way more fun watching those movies instead of this boring mess.
I just saw the trailer for this before The LEGO Batman movie.
I've never cringed so fucking hard in a cinema.
I will watch almost anything, and I find redeeming qualities in almost everything. After about 15 minutes of this movie, it lost my attention entirely, and it was 40 minutes in (25 minutes later) when I realized it was still on. The movie is literally so forgettable that you won't even make it through it once. Rated 2 points because at least it kept my attention for a little bit.
i wish they release emoji who can do it all. express all the emotions!
Ok so not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Not the best animation film but does the job good...i didn’t mind it
Honestly didn't hate this. Got into it with low expectations. It was kinda funny sometimes, and I liked the overall message. Tbh not bad. Wouldn't watch it again, but I don't regret watching it either. :)
This is not as bad as the reviews assert.
this movie awsome but i dont know a lot people no like him i rate 7 / 10 and the movie good store and special
full of cringe things "not logical things" but still fun to watch :) meh
Just kinda has no content at all.
It didn't feel like my friends and I had gone to see a movie.
It felt like a bunch of people staring at a screen in total silence.
