Chess isn't the only battle at the heart of this film. Mental illness and a savage culture are also on the board. I tried to keep my emotions in check, but the in the end the film won... checkmate...it broke my heart. Wonderful and inspirational true story, long live the Eastern Knights!

I went into this thinking "not another chess movie", but it won me over completely. I'm a bit bias, because I love films about Maori culture, but even excluding that, this film shouldn't be written off as just another underdog chess movie. It was the backdrop to this story of family and community. I loved it! Cliff Curtis was great and it was a pleasure seeing James Rolleston all grown up from his role in Boy. I really liked this movie!
