The Dark Crystal 1982

Dark crystal used to terrify me as a young kid, the bird like creatures are truly terrifying. Watching it again as an adult, the film was a bit lost and long-winded.

The plot may be a bit wonky if you look too closely - hey, it's a children's film, albeit a rather disturbing one at times! - but the visuals are the major selling point of The Dark Crystal. It's a stunning world Jim Henson and his team created and is perfect escapism. The Skeksis are an iconic baddie but it has to be Aughra, slightly cantankerous and with a DGAF attitude, who is the film's MVP.

All I could think about when watching "The Dark Crystal" is how much work it must have been to shoot it. Look at all those damned Muppets! There was some serious work logged here which makes it all the more a shame that the story itself is a rather by-the-numbers Fantasy tale. Also present is the odd Muppet creepiness which is even more pronounced since we're not watching Kermit the Frog or Miss Piggy here. I like the creepiness though. I'd bet it wasn't intentional but it was there in great quantity.

This was released in 1982 and probably went absolutely nowhere at the box office given the incredible run of movies that hit theaters that year.

The Dark Crystal is one of the most unique and imaginative fantasy films of the ‘80s. From writer/director Jim Henson comes this dark tale about a young boy named Jen who must embark upon a quest to heal the all-powerful Dark Crystal before the celestial Great Convergence, which could end the world. Astoundingly, all of the characters in the film are puppets that have remarkably creative and interesting designs. In fact, the entire visual style of the film is especially vivid and surreal. The Dark Crystal is a strange and bizarre film that's oddly fascinating and compelling.

I didn't grow up watching this. I think Labyrinth holds up much better for adults. This one failed to hold my attention despite only being 90 minutes long. Maybe it was the lack of a human element.

A simple, effective and straight to the point plot. It does not necessarily say much, but nowadays we really miss simple fantasy films like this.
