There's a lot here to enjoy, and a lot here to confuse.
The computer voice on Toombs' ship says it all...
“Plotted course good. Angle of approach, not good.”
Dunno why the film gets so much hate, must be Nolan fans.
Masterpiece. They don't make em like this anymore.
The science-fiction/fantasy epic The Chronicles of Riddick is an exciting and action-packed adventure. When the planet Helion Prime is threatened by a totalitarian race called the Necromongers, they seek help from an outlaw named Riddick to save them. Starring Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Alexa Davalos, and Thandie Newton, the cast is quite good, and they deliver some impressive performances. The action scenes are also especially well-done, and bring a lot of energy to the film. However, the story is a little incoherent and fragmented due to some pacing and script problems. Still, The Chronicles of Riddick is a thoroughly entertaining thriller.
Make sure you catch the DC, not the theatrical version
Tl;Dr—cringy, edgelord characters that take the subject matter completely seriously, but thanks to great pacing and consistently watchable characters and action, with gorgeous production design, it's still a good watch
This film has an edgelord protagonist, main characters, and laugh-worthy scene setups at times, all straight out of a teenage boy's notebook, but It's also got phenomenal production design, costumes, and some capable actors (even if it does waste Nick Chinlund), and the whole product is actually quite nice to look at—especially considering how much time they spend inside a sci-fi prison, and even manages some nice bits of creative cinematography (that strut sequence with Urban and Newton is like a bizarre combo of Zoolander and Alien, and I had to watch it twice when it played.)
I still couldn't ever take them seriously when they kept saying 'necromund'. Poor actors. Very attractive actors, though. And they all fit the roles and had the right look. There are plenty of "glamor shots"— of costumes/armor, Thandiew Newton in skin-tight dresses that are both glamorous and fascinatingly alien, of Riddick's fantastic physique, of Alexa Davolos looking like a sexy combat chica short stack next to Riddick. They also put an insane amount of baroque detail work into that knife; it's gorgeous and I want it, and I don't even collect weapons.
While I didn't really think much of Pitch Black, (and actually turned it off before the end), this was a thoroughly enjoyable watch from start to finish, even as seriously as it took its juvenile script, it somehow worked surprisingly well due to great pacing and compelling overall filmmaking, with unique and fascinating visuals.
Richard B. Riddick: You made three mistakes. First, you took the job. Second, you came light. A four man crew for me? Fucking insulting. But the worst mistake you made...
[Toombs darts for the gun rack which he finds to be empty while Riddick smiles]
It's a different type of mediocrity than Pitch Black. A bigger budget and more world expanding can't make this better than a dumb action movie.
This is a testament to "bigger is not always better". The original Riddick film PITCH BLACK was made for less than a quarter of the price and told a smaller more intimate tale. This film cost $US 105 million and told a world killer tale (complete with A list actors). The former brought in double the cost of making it and earned a loyal following. The latter made a modest (relatively) more than it cost to make and disappointed its original fan base. If this film had been a one off it would have been an OK film, but as a sequel it lost much of what was good about the first. I give this movie a 7 (good) out of 10, when the original was a 10 out of 10. [SciFi Action]
I like this movie, good sci-fi.
It may well have seemed logical to expand the universe for the sequel to Pitch Black, but unfortunately the film can't quite decide whether to commit to full blown sci-fi epic, given the increase in budget, or stick with the B-movie sensibility of the initial film. It doesn't help that the epic elements are muddled at best with some rather dull humourless villains (with only Thandie Newton seeming to have any sort of fun), an enigmatic Judi Dench whose motives are never fully explained and the usual tropes of prophecy and history that only serve to undermine the antiheroic nature of Riddick. Fortunately, while this story frames the film, the B-movie plot line is much more fun, with Riddick being chased by mercenaries and a trip to a prison planet that take up much of the running time. There is a strong much shorter film in here that would have worked well with Pitch Black. As it stands, it remains flawed but watchable.
When I watched it for the first time, I didn't really like it at all. But after subsequent viewings, it started to grow on me. Now I don't think it's too bad. Not as good as Pitch Black though. I think the problem was Chronicles was all over the place, story-wise, and it was kind of hard to follow. Which is why it took a number of viewings for me to finally get into it. Pitch Black, on the other hand, was simple and straight forward.
Haven't seen the third film yet, but it looks to be like Pitch Black but with a bugger budget.
There are some really got actors in this movie but they played really bad and it was more than a B-Movie.
Well its okay to watch it if u r a Science Fiction Fan like me and if you keep your expectations low.
My opinion, forget Pitch Black... It never existed
I haven't really got a clue what's going on, but it's certainly entertaining. Vin Diesel's got a very compelling voice.

Compared to "Pitch Black" this film features more Sci-Fi, better special effects and less horror elements. A worthy sequel and a very "cool", fast and fun watch.
