What ruins this film is the end, why it is OK for <bender to stay the way he is, but Allison MUST change her looks and behaviour in order to "fit in"? I am no teenager and since I was a child in the 80's that issue has always bothered me.
Woah, splendid representation of what could happen if you sit down and actually talk to people and about yourself, show interest in a person. What a difference it could make and how people can be influenced. Glad I finally got around to seeing it.
After reading some of the negative comments made about this movie, i decided to make some of my own. Yes, to younger viewers, this movie will appear to be outdated. The only thing "outdated" is the clothing styles and the music. It doesnt matter what year you went to high school or what school you even went to, there will always be a "criminal", a "jock", a "princess", a "nerd", and a "basket case". This movie is the best teenage movie, no matter when you are a teenager!
An authentic representation of the reality of the teenage world and the criticizes that come within it. There are criticizes within the choices you make, undertaking these individuals through a pressure of fitting in with others, which in the end develops criticizes, too. The most important highlight of The Breakfast Club is the question that pressures teenagers; “What do we want to do with our lives?” “How do we really reveal our true identities?”
Honestly, this is a really clichéd film, however, for it’s time it was outstanding, and it is still relevant to modern society. I think we can all find ourselves in The Breakfast Club and relate to the characters. We have all gone or are going through this stage of life and that is what is so goddamn re-watchable about this film. We can connect to it in every single way. The cast is amazing. They all fit their roles in perfectly and the soundtrack couldn’t have been any better. The Breakfast Club is truly a masterpiece!
The Breakfast Club is a classic movie of the 80's genre and another masterpiece from the legendary writer and director, John Hughes. The film is a quintessential coming of age story that follows a diverse group of high school students who come together during a Saturday detention. The movie is one of the greatest films of the 80's, capturing the essence of teenage agony and rebellion that defined the decade. The characters are relatable, and the performances are outstanding, making the film a timeless classic that has stood the test of time. If you're a fan of 80's movies or just great cinema, The Breakfast Club is a must-watch.
The most timeless film of the Hughes / Ringwald / Brat Pack era, and clearly the most serious, personal work of the director's career. The Breakfast Club is an up-close, introspective look at five essentially disparate souls who share one cramped Saturday together in detention and, along the way, discover there's much more to their peers than what they wear and who they hang with.
Reminiscent of theater, much like the closed-room classic 12 Angry Men, this isn't a flashy picture but it really doesn't need to be. This film rides entirely on the strength of its authentic, revealing dialog and the astonishingly mature, resounding performances of its cast, who contribute many of the sharpest, most memorable lines via ad-lib. It's about trust (or lack thereof), pushing others' buttons, being honest with oneself, testing new boundaries and revealing a shared, deep-seated uneasiness about the perilous approach of adulthood and its inherent responsibilities. Emotions run high at this age, and they respect no class distinctions.
The cast may be extremely small, but it delivers across the board; Judd Nelson's damaged loner, Ally Sheedy's bashful antisocial, Anthony Michael Hall's over-stressed bookworm, Emilio Estevez's high-strung jock, Molly Ringwald's pretentious priss. Each role a potential career-maker, and not a missed note in the bunch. It's an existential essential, a notice to uncertain adolescents that somebody understands, and a reminder to their grown-up counterparts that they, too, were once just as troubled.
"We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all."
maybe i'm minority to dislike what really happen between them and maybe i too old to like it
Okay movie but I don't get the big hype. The last minutes of the movie there were all of a sudden two relationships that came out of nowhere and also I hated the whole makeover scene with Allison. Was still a fun movie to watch, the ending was just unsatisfying I think.
I don't think Allison's makeover is what makes Andy interested in her, as he was looking at her in a quite interested way just before Claire changed her looks. The coupling was unnecessary because they could all just stay friends, but I think the decision was to put on movie what the future would probably look like - that is, unless they made a "the next Monday" scene, there was no easy way to convey the idea that they would stay friends.
This movie is incredible. But that ending was utter trash (mostly)
The way the characters are introduced truly tells the audience who these people are, which is the then even further amplified by the meals they decided to eat. Each unique and matching their personality.
Now when I say the ending, I don't mean the last act. I mean the last 5 minutes. Completely changing the appearance and in some ways altering the way she acts. It very much felt like a forced romance with two characters that had no romantic flair.
Characters from best to worst:
Allison
Brian
Andy
John
Claire
Richard
I really wish Claire and John has a more interesting storyline but it was quite boring and overly predictable. However, the Allison and Andy relationship felt completely out of nowhere and changed her character away from the weirdo and into traditional girlfriend stereotype. Whereas all of the other characters tend to stay very much the same but become friends. Realising not to judge a book by its cover.
After doing some basic reading on the film, there was meant to be a sequel every ten years. Which has sadly fallen through due to arguments and mishaps. I really would have liked to have seen a sequel or two in this format.
This movie holds up so well, which is why it's a classic this movie is so good and no matter where you go or went to school there's those stereotypes and this movie explores those different stereotypes all interacting with each other and sharing common issues. The nostalgia with this movie definitely helps but nonetheless this movie is incredible kinda wish {spoiler} they didn't couple in the end but that's really my only flaw with the movie.
Amazing movie, loses a point for the sad ending of presenting teenagers to the concept of changing-yourself-to-fit-in shit.
allison is far hotter when she's weird.
Cool movie, except Allison's makeover.
Pretty much the perfect ending song.
one of the best 80's teen movies of all-time.......the cast was perfect
It's so wholesome to see such different people interact with each other and open up. Also kinda scary to see how their parents had a huge influence on their personality (John's father who hurt him, the neglecting parents of Allison, etc.)
These characters were archetypes, and for me... it was okay. I liked these cliché characters. I think we can all find ourselves in one of them, or relate to some of these characters in a way. Brian, the nerd, Alison, the outcast, yeah, sounds about right...
And these characters developed through the movie, unlike stereotypical characters would. At first I totally thought the "jock" and the "princess" would get together at the end, but I'm glad that they didn't go with this stereotype.
The only thing I didn't like was the ending of the movie and its message. I know that even the actress of Allison Reynolds said that she didn't like the "transformation" of Allison, and that she needed this for a boy to notice her. And also Claire's ending was... Idk. Kind of messed up. John was just a toxic character in some way. But I guess these are just the things your movie needs to have, or at least needed to have in the 80's.
All in all, it's not a perfect movie, I can see it's flaws, but it was just... a great experience, I don't know how else to describe it.
And here I am, writing a review that probably nobody will read (other than me). But I don't mind that. I just want to have my thoughts written down, and when I read this back I want to remember this.
(also sorry for any grammatical errors, I'm really tired and my brain doesn't function in writing rn)
It’s something that comes and goes, but leaves its essences behind...
in my opinion, this is one of the best movies ever made! I love Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson together!
Five students are punished. You recognize their personalities.
nothing happened but at the same time everything happened
Great movie, still worthy to be watched in 2021. Just wished the very end of the film was different: i wasn't botherd by the coupling (i mean this was meant to be a teen movie) but without all that makeover part would have been basically perfect.
This film was a really neat representation of the classic “students in detention” scenario. It really showed what happens when you look beyond what you immediately know about a person. There is a collection of experiences and feelings that makes each person who they are, and if you assume them to be just one thing, then you are completely wrong. Maybe a person represents a stereotype, but that stereotype does not represent them.
One of the best teen movie ever made. Honest and extremely real.
An instant classic.
Still John Hughes's masterpiece bringing all the teen angst in awayy that feels real and fun at the same time. 10/10
I gotta say this movie must be really interesting for any age but as a teen i must say its hard not to relate with at least one of them its really a deep view at a teens life. We are all once teenagers but it seems that adults tend to forgt that. Any parent out there should watch and try to understand its not an easy part of lifes. Its amazing that its still so relatible in these days. Great piece of art they made here :)
This feels real, real people with real problems from multiple walks of life that find out thhey aren't so different after all. The script, directing and actin is great.
best movie ever, my new favorite movie
7.8 rating?! This is one of the greatest teen movies of all time! F....g kids these days don't even know what's good with their dumb CW and Netflix teen dramas.
Definitely the most 90s movie of the 80s. It dared, at least ten years ahead of the more jaded teen movies of the 90s, to deconstruct the glossy positivity and superficial vibe that seemed to permeate the 80s pop culture. Technically the script was very clever and balanced, ok that kind of dumb wrap up...is really misplaced and basically end up destroying almost all the characters construction efforts.
However I think it remains a seminal movie in its own genre, somehow daringly tried to be some sort of American Graffiti for the 80s, and yes probably most of the successful teen indie dramas of the 90s would have never existed without The Breakfast Club.
But still it feels like half baked for nowadays standards...maybe is just that didn't aged well, or maybe because lets you glimpse here and there what could have been so much better in this movie, that then you end up focusing on its smaller flaws instead of its bigger qualities.
Sure I have the feeling that if the script of The Breakfast Club had wandered from one producer to another for just few more years and made it to the 90s, probably some Kevin Smith would have turned into one of the main generation-X iconic movies.
But still, it happened in the 80s...and none could afford to be too much 90s in the 80s.. XD ...just like the main characters of the movie, you had too much expectations to deal with...
Theme- 9/10
Rewatchibility- 9/10
Acting- 8.5/10
Kinematography- 9.5/10
Time- 9.5/10
Total - 45.5/5 = 9.1
This is a classic movie. It really shows how teenagers are all so much alike, but they hide behind a persona, but deep down inside they’re all dealing with the same insecurities and anxieties.
Still holds up. Classic teenage / high school movie. My daughter is going to high school soon, so this is required watching. ;-)
Life isn't quite the same these days, but the variety of different characters still relates. The struggle between jealousy of people you don't really know vs finding out what they are really like is still relevant today.
The performances were good, I really liked it if it wasn't for the end. The couples in the end don't make sense and lots of opened problems remain unsolved. I didn't like the makeover in the end. Why did she have to change her look and why did the sport guy immediately go after her, just because of the makeover?
Quite simply one of the best films of all time, the glory days of 80s coming of age cinema. John Hughes at his finest.
Watch this movie has a teen and now as 42yo father of three. I was one of the 5 and I do all I can so that my kids are not
I loved it!! Horrors of laughter, adolescent dinners, psychological, family and social problems show us the intensity of a person's head in such a young phase. The different personalities, the ways to solve their problems and even the romance so immature hahahahaha. A well-made film.
I get why like why people like this film, but I personally didn't like it that much. It was funny sometimes and I laughed a couple of times, but I thought the story wasn't really that interesting overall.
need someone to look at me the way Andrew did with Allison at the end
Holds up soo well. It's a timeless window into the different lives teenagers lead. Sure, it gets kind of hokey at times, but the raw emotions are authentic.
The plot is simple, but the characters are powerful.
7.4/10 Good movie, with great messagas and with some interesting characters to develop a story.Although i would expect something more so i could rate it as a great movie :/
Very current for what counts, the years have passed and things continue the same. The start of the new Power Rangers movie is equal to the beginning of this
Another one of John Hughes` great teen comedy/dramas. I loved watching this movies as a teenager. You´d always found a character to identifiy with. And, boy, do I had a crush on Molly ;-)
Today, older and (maybe?) wiser I see some minor flaws but the nostalgia and the memories outweigh.
Best teen movie ever. Watched when I was 16 or so.
And ignor comments about xyz had to fit in and that is bad and bla bla bla. Her character liked it so she can do whatever. Bender chose not to fit in. Also fine.
Bottom line, best teen movie ever. Watch it!
One of my favorite movies of all time. Seen it at least 15-20 times.
One of my favorites

The Breakfast Club was great, probably one of the best teen movies I've ever seen. Despite the stereotypes that all the characters are, they're still fun to watch and I particularly liked Allison. The only major problems I had with it were the really bland adults and the absolutely terrible ending.
The coupling up was completely unnecessary and Allison was way cooler pre-makeover; she basically changed everything that made her who she is because hurr gotta wear makeup and be pretty. I would have been perfectly happy if everybody had stayed the way they were and just been friendly with each other. Grrr...
