Very creepy movie with a very simple plot: find the "Blair Witch" in the dark woods.
that's it????????????????????????????????????? all I heard were her screaming like a pig at the end.
It must of been insane seeing this and thinking it was real back in the day. It still is scary and a cool concept.
Not a fan at all. Only movie in my life I've walked out of theaters on and I love me some B-rated Horror.
Holds up very well after all these years.
Handheld cams make me sick, boring too.
so bad. "you guise there are rocks here"
Not my first time to watch it but after watching it with fresh eyes, I'm still very unimpressed. Why this was supposed to be such a "scary" movie is beyond me. Even the "creepy" moments were few and far between...unless, of course, being lost in the woods with a hysterical, demanding bitch is your worst phobia, in which case, this film probably would give you nightmares. First thought about halfway into this film is that someone should have knocked "Heather" (played all-too-well by Rei Hance) in the head with one of those rocks they found piled into a cairn, and then left her unconscious for the "witch" - or whatever was chasing them - as some sort of sacrificial goat. There was absolutely nothing scary or horrific about this movie...and certainly if bloodshed, gore, and/or torture porn is your thing, you may as well not waste 81 minutes sitting through this one. The Blair Witch Project should never have made it onto the list of The 20 Best Horror Movies Ever Made (not even the list "according to Redditt", which is where I got the list from.) This is not a "horror" movie; it isn't even a "scary" movie...I would even rule out considering this one "spooky" or "creepy". There's just not enough here to merit it being included in such a list. The characters were too flimsy; the ONLY one with any personality that could be bought into was "Heather", and she was nothing short of bitchy, demanding, and annoying. The only emotion I felt while sitting through this one was a smug satisfaction near the end when she's tearfully apologizing (on camera, of course, as is EVERYTHING for Heather) for it all being "her fault". Yes, it was, Heather, it was indeed "all your fault" and I took real satisfaction - to the point of even grinning and nodding my approval - as she tearfully said her goodbyes and begged for forgiveness that she would never feel. Apart from that one moment, however, this was nothing but annoying, shallow, and snail-paced and certainly unworthy of being on the same list as Rob Carpenter's The Thing , Silent Hill , and The Conjuring . THOSE were some scary movies. This was a minor...no, actually, a MAJOR annoyance but nothing more. Avoid this one unless you just want to throw away 81 minutes. In fact, even if you want to throw away 81 minutes, do it in some better fashion. This isn't worth it.
This movie was one of the first to introduce the concept of hand-held camera movies, shaky and unedited, with the feeling of a first person telling story. In a time were horror was displayed unscrupulously in the screens this movie shows nothing; it plays with the imagination, the paranoia, the expectation.
The Blair Witch Project is a reminder that what really scares us is the stuff we can't see. The noise in the dark is almost always scarier than what makes the noise in the dark. —Roger Ebert
This is a very well known movie in the Horror genre that I think we have to thank for the shaky camera technique. I recall hearing of people getting sick from the camerawork or lack of it. I wish I had seen this back when it was in its original run in theaters. It probably would have been more effective. Nothing really happens other than the characters get lost and one of them disappears. The surprising thing is that it actually has effective moments. When the characters are in the dark and their flashlights dimmed the scares were there. But true to form nothing happens. All of the scares are generated by a fear of the unknown. Unfortunately "Blair Witch" carries it a little too far. I am not advocating the need for gore in this movie there is none other than the main character finding some recently extracted teeth presumably from the character that had disappeared. It just needed a little something. Someone moving in the woods a brief glance at a shadowy figure. Something more than little piles of rocks and stickmen hanging in trees.
Much is left open for interpretation especially the ending. It's frustrating. SPOILER I think the fact that Mike is standing in the corner of the basement in the old house is a callback to an earlier moment in the movie which tells of victims being made to stand in a corner while someone is murdered in the same room. That implies the main character who sees Mike standing in the corner is going to be killed...I think. END SPOILER
Anyone who claims this seminal found footage film isn't scary wasn't me as a 14 year old boy watching it for the first time.
The strong point of this movie is its attempt to pretend as a recovered footage. Its the mightiest, and maybe the only, suspension of disbelief in this movie. Once you know that this is actually -not- a recovered footage, The Blair Witch Project loses its grip. It becomes a bit dull and you have to withstand the drama, since they don't actually show any ghosts. However the ending is still pretty suspense - very unexpected though it was foreshadowed early in the movie.
I wish I liked found footage but even if I did, I’d still hate these characters.
listen up my brothers and sisters. lemme tell yall something. this movie is horror freaking scary for real for real. imma be honest with yall. i hate ghosts and the reason why is because they are scary. they like to scare people in their homes and this is not fair. i mean they like to scare you but as soon as you wanna ask for help they disappear. so they bail you and not gonna help you with dishes, taking out garbage or paying the rent, fuck em all. i mean the movie had great vibe liked it a lot.
i have a feeling that this movie benefited a lot from the viral marketing that led up to its release. 2 decades later, with a lot of found footage horror following its lead and no way to mistake it for being legitimate footage, it doesn't really stand out in any way. the trivia behind the scenes was a lot of fun to read, though, i highly recommend it!
Even after 17 years from premiere it still keeps thrilling :) In category of handheld movies still almost ubeatable.
I didn't like it when it came out but I tried to watch it again today and it still sucks. I'm usually one of those people who understands people like different things but I honestly can't wrap my head around why people are raving on about this movie. The first 45 minutes is just them fighting about a map. You see some sticks, oooooh. And nothing until the last 4 minutes. Utter shite.
The Blair Witch Project is a groundbreaking horror film that delivers truly terrifying scares. Through “recovered footage,” the film follows a group of three college students who disappeared while filming a documentary on the local legend of the Blair Witch. The footage is incredibly authentic and caused many to question whether it was actually real. The suspense and intensity is built up incredibly well, and captures the terror and desperation of the characters. Remarkably realistic and haunting, The Blair Witch Project is a daring, visionary film that pioneered the found footage genre.
9/10
22 years later, nearly
23 years later and this
Ground breaking movie hasn't aged a day.
This is the movie that set all
found footage movies
off and put them on the map where to this
very day we now have thousands of them,
With many many more new ones
being made each year but
"The Blair Witch"
Was the first to do it and show us all
that there is another way
(a new way) to enjoy a movie like never before.
"TBW"
Is a superb movie and even to this day
would have a solid argument of being
the best of it's style/genre.
I never get tired of watching this
movie and it never gets old,
It delivers thrilling entertainment
with such ease and precision,
It's very clear about it's
Intentions right from the
get-go.
I must have watched this movie a thousand times and more and I'm just as invested in all 3 peoples situation and outcome as I was 23yrs ago.
This movie has stood the test of time and will continue to do so and whether you absolutely love it as I do are hate it as others do, there is no denying that this movie has a Legacy That Will
"Out Live Us All".
If you are a fan of handheld camera "True Story" movies, this is a classic/treat. The budget to box-office ratio is truly an amazing achievement and something to be proud of as this movie is a perfect example of how to make a cheap movie. Frankly i much prefer the marble hornets Slenderman series, which is free on youtube. My rating may seem low but its just not my kind of horror. I found Heathers screaming throughout to be quite annoying, but it is probably accurate to what a girl lost for days in the woods slowly losing friends would act like .
This was a very new and unique style of movie when it came out. Very exciting to see. Of the 3 Blair Witch movies this is the one to see.
63% makes me sad. meh.
at least 77. to say the least!

This movie is a total delight for fans of handheld camera movies. The ending was very good, no forced shit like other horror films.
