The Blackening 2023

Went into it thinking it was going to be something like Scary Movie..... nothing like that. Painfully unfunny. Couldn't finish it.

Not funny enough to be a comedy, and not scary enough to be horror/thriller. Someone recommended this movie bc I love Scary Movie, but sadly this is nowhere near that level. The writing is just.. too weak. I would've forgiven it if it just been scary like Jordan Peele's movies, but no, it failed in that too. Very few deaths (and non creative ones at that) for a supposed slasher. Had no rewatchability. This is one of those movies that you will forget even existed by next year. Sad bc the premise had so much potential.

A fun, winning time, pure and simple. The cast is game and giving 100%, there’s some quality gags, a nice camaraderie, and a charming script. The story’s not as clever as it wants to be, but it doesn’t need to be, and seeing it in a theater with a bought in audience really completed the experience. Hope Tim Story gets to do more like this instead of FFs and Tom and Jerrys.

fun, surprisingly lighthearted, and endearing performances from the cast

I do feel like it played things a bit too safe and the ending/villain reveal was anticlimactic but overall a good time!

This movie is a clear example of why Jordan Peele is so next level. It is also an example of how much better this genre has become. Not a great movie. But better than Scary Movie.

It’s sort of like if Scary Movie was really a Horror/Comedy and not a spoof. The Blackening is as stupid as it is fun.
Jermaine Fowler as Clifton is like Steve Urcle in a Horror movie.

Now this is a great unique film as it is and isn't a dark comedy and horror movie at the same time. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time waiting for either the next great joke or the next jump scare, as this film follows a group of black friends who are reuniting from their college days by renting out a cabin for the weekend but it suddenly turns into horror as they are seemingly hunted in the house. The plot development and character development is great, but what makes this for such a great watch is the uniqueness of the blend of racist comedy and horror. Its like "Haunted House" except that the horror part is actually real. And of course there is a big plot twist at the end.

A very self-aware comedy that knows exactly what it is and who is aimed at. It has some real laugh out loud moments and a clever plot that features all of the black horror tropes. Solid cast and great movie.

An interesting idea to have a meta horror comedy made by people that don’t appreciate or even like horror and also don’t like comedy.

loading replies

Nowadays you have to be careful when laughing at certain issues, I think it was done correctly here. And the fact that horror is also defendable is an additional plus.

loading replies

Better than I expected it to be , not nearly as funny or as clever as the filmmakers think it is.

loading replies

Consistently funny. Definitely worth watching.

loading replies

It had its moments of being funny. Just wish it had more bite. Played things fairly safe with the horror aspect and could have used a few more jokes. Entertaining enough to watch

Painfully dull. makes scary movie 5 feel like a comedy .

Scary Movie meets Bodies Bodies Bodies meets Bitch Ass.

Very meta, self-aware, filled with tropes and steriotypes. A social commentary on the idea of being black enough. The Blackening is a really good balance of comedy and horror. The ensemble cast, characters and comical dynamics are what brings the movie to life they're so enjoyable. I didn't catch all the jokes but this was still hilarious. The mind-talking is such a great idea I loved it and favorite moment was the vomit scene. Shanika and Dewayne were my favorites. Lots of suspence. Not much gore, not many kills and I wish the ones we had were more creative. The ending was a bit anticlimactic but I much enjoyed the journey to get there.

Had some good ideas and several solid moments throughout, but many were short lived and it slowed to a crawl in parts. Was expecting a little bit more pace to this. That said it featured some good performances. 6.1

Yet another bad movie from Tim Story. It certainly blackened my mood.

Film 142 (Goal: 300) of 2024:

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed The Blackening. The film touches on all things, such as black culture, stereotypes, and the role of black characters in horror films. Marketed as a comedy / horror, I don't know if The Blackening does either at a level that will let it stand above others - but the film as a whole, is a fun and well constructed piece. The writers never let any characters get too overbearing and they give time for most characters to shine. And while I predicted some of the end, that didn't ruin the experience for me.

The entire cast here is great but I really like Jermaine Fowler. I've seen him in a few things now, and hope he's in more projects.

The Blackening is director Tim Story's best work.

Well, with his body of work including - Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Taxi, Shaft (2019), and Tom and Jerry (2021), the bar is low.

It was an okay horror movie, its biggest issue is that it doesn’t lean into the horror or humor enough. There’s a decent movie here that could have been better, but falls flat too often to outwardly recommend.

Rating: 2.5/5 - 70% - Worth Watching

I noticed a lot of people saying it's not scary. it was not supposed to be scary it's a satire like Scary movie. but it's focal point of it's jokes is more inside jokes to Black community. I enjoyed it.

I doubt I'll rewatch this. It had a few funny moments, but overall it's a cheesy horror movie. Basically, a Scooby-Doo episode with an all black cast.

was fun, could have been shorter.

I thought it was hilarious. The ending was predictable, though. The nerdy guy was miscast. And the villain didn't have the iconic design of other slasher movies.

Like a Cajun barbecue on Juneteenth: tasty, cultural and blackened.

Not as good as Bodies Bodies Bodies, and the end was too long and had too much talk.

But overall, entertaining little slasher comedy. Well done, folks.

This might be the best black horror comedy since the original Scary Movie. Entertaining from start to finish. With an ending coda that IMO might be better than Get Out. It's not the best movie I've ever seen. Heck it's not even the best horror comedy I've ever seen. But for what it was and where it tried to go. It nailed the landing firmly. I could easily see myself watching and rewatching this. The black talent on the screen were all great. I can't pick a stand out not because any of them felt weak but because all of them felt emphatic. Shout out to Diedrich Bader for perfectly getting the balance of his character on that line between what he appears to be and what little we know him to actually be.

I hope to see more movies like this which for all it's advertising ended up being more casually black than pointedly so. I might drop this down from a 9 after I watch it a few more times but we'll see.

The script needed a few more passes.

Was both scary and funny so it worked. It’s about a group of black people and their hilarious stereotypical misconceptions about both white people and other black people. A fun watch late at night and was better than I expected. 7.6/10.

First half had promise. The villain was corny AF. And I love Jermaine Fowler. But this wasn't the role for him.
The final act squandered the whole movie.

My Ratings

9 - Very good, might not love but very well done or might love, forgiving some issues
8 - Very enjoyable or Just OK for me but well done
7 - Good
6 - Watchable despite not liking the film/show

I loved this movie so funny :) I recommend it ! ! ! Some good jocks :)

The movie ends up being average it has some funny jokes and a lot of unfunny jokes, it never really has you scared or nervous for the characters and is very predictable. The movie overall is a good time but lacks anything original enough to make it stand out and uses lazy things like characters being to talk to each other through their minds or drugs to actually accomplish anything.
