The Birth of a Nation 2016

While the subject matter is familiar, I was previously unfamiliar with the story of Nat Turner. The film isn't perfect, but considering this is the directing debut of Parker, it is ultimately a huge accomplishment. A tragic story, as expected, but one told with a righteous passion.

I am very tired of the slave movies, is it possible that we can move the timeline forward and have a movie about Garrett A. Morgan. I would love to see that. Don't get me wrong Nat Turner definitely deserves a movie, just not in this decade. (This is just an opinion, I will have a more fleshed out review when I finally see this in 2021.)

Nate Parker's inexperience, but also his passion, really show in this sometimes powerful, but often boring and conventional movie. Sluggish pace, ugly desaturated color palette, generic writing and atrociously filmed and edited action scenes are all signs of a writer/director that has a lot of room for improvement. The character work was also lacking, with Parker asking the audience to care for a protagonist just because he's suffering, while not doing the hard work of actually presenting a likable lead. The religious justification and glorification of violence is also, though sometimes understandable, deeply troubling. The huge historical inaccuracies don't help either, and their connection with Parker's rape allegations are darkly ironic at best, and creepy at worst.

This said, there's good in here. This is a movie that counts on moments, and Parker really banks on those, and they mainly work, as do the performances. But in between them there's just a less gripping 12 Years a Slave.

I can understand people who love this movie, as I can understand who hates it. Personally, I'm in the middle of the road, but The Birth of a Nation certainly isn't the Oscar contender that Sundance would have us believe.

such a powerful and at the same time, sad movie.

acting is good - 4/5
story is interesting - 4/5
character development is superb - 5/5

only thing that movie is missing, at least for me, is some kind of tactic instead of rushing into armed soldiers.
you just cant do that.

anyway, i enjoyed in this movie and i can say that i didnt watch a solid or good movie for a looong time.

not perfect, but very good!

overall 8/10

Sorry folks.

I mean, the film isn't bad or anything like that, but it's not standing ovation good.

Like seriously, this got a standing ovation at Sundance? Is it because of that stupid #Oscarsowhite thing. The hype for this was just insane and kind of a waste. I'm glad the Oscar buzz for this died out.

The film feels like a rehash of better slave movies. It's doesn't do anything different or unique to the story. It's bland in terms of film making and storytelling. There was no soul or heart to it. Half of it felt made up. The performances were good and couple of scenes that was pretty brutal, but that’s really it.
