I still like this film and yes it has its flaws but it’s still a million times better than Zac Snyders Superman movies
Simon Massey's review is spot on.
In summary, makes a very natural trilogy for the Christopher Reeve Superman 1 and 2 films.
This is far superior to the horrendously dark and displeasing Man of Steel.
It isn't perfect by any means. I like most of the cast, I like the atmosphere, but I could do with less romanticism. It's crying out for an extended cut to give it that final oomph.
And the scenes of Superman flying are a real treat for someone who grew up with Reeve and Cain as his supermen. The use of the original John Williams score is excellent too.
7.25/10
Brandon Routh makes an amazing superman, with Kevin Spacey as the perfect foil to this. I finally decided to watch this movie, and I was not displeased at all. At the time of release, I thought this would not be so good. I was wrong. I'm also glad that this Superman will be seen in the Arrowverse.
Worst casted Superman movie EVER!!! I remember how all the actors complimented each other on their roles just to find out on release they were all just blowing smoke up each others' asses. Pfff!! What a joke!!! I personally think this movie ruined Brandon Routh's career.
Avoid this MOVIE AT ALL COSTS!!!
A highly romanticised version of the Superman mythos, and a continuation of the first two originał Reeve films. Singer adheres to a lot of elements from these films, perhaps a little too much as he attempts to continue a story over 25 years old. There is a distinct melancholic feel to the film as Superman's sense of being an outsider and need to connect is emphasised, but this is brought full circle in a twist that many didn't like, but makes perfect thematic sense and allows for a touching heartfelt scene at the end. Whilst Singer also struggles with the Clark/Lois relationship owing to the story needs, he gets the Superman/Lois scenes right and these form the emotional backbone of the film. The complaint of a lack of action is moot as there is plenty of it with a stunning plane rescue sequence being the highlight and an emphasis on Superman saving people rather than simply fighting (take note Man of Steel) although Luthor's plan is again ridiculous. The flying sequences are often beautiful to watch, a minor quibble being the overuse of CGI to depict Superman. Both Routh and Bosworth do a fine job, if a little imitative of Reeve and Kidder, and it is a shame they don't get more to do as Lois and Clark as their characters don't get the chance to display the spark and fun seen in the originals. John Ottman's score wisely includes William's themes, but he adds enough of his own memorable moments that are in keeping with these themes. Ultimately this forms a nice if imperfect trilogy with the Reeve classics.
Surprisingly good "super hero flick": Superman battles Lex Luthor once more. Luther stole some of Superman's crystals during Superman's search for his homeplanet. With these crystals Luther wants to create a new continent from which he hopes to rule the world. Since the creation of this new continent would also cause the destruction of the bigger part of northern America, Superman has to intervene!
I don't know if i'd call this a reboot, remake or a sequel. It's a bit of everything yet nothing entirely. It's still a good movie that is underrated at 61 %.
I really appreciate all the little details and easter eggs that pay hommage to the original Superman movie. You can see that Singer is really a fan. Heck, they even made some of the flying scenes look a little bit dated althought I'm sure with the tech in 2006 they could have been much better. Story is OK for the genre but ultimately doesn't deliver anything really new or grand. Which is one reason I did not rate it higher. The other being, I was never a fan of the Superman / Lois romance. And, no matter what version, I never liked Lois Lane. And that, for me, takes up too much time in the movie. Trim that down, or leave it out, cuts probably twenty minutes of the running time. I might have even rated it higher. I know they needed something for the impact of him having a son. But I didn't like it, so ...
All in all still worth watching and ultimately massively better then the latest Superhero movies being put out.
Another take on the Superman story. This was really nice. Engaging at an emotional level unlike a lot of hero movies.
The story of the film is a good closure of the original first two films plots. Visually, it is also not missing anything. However, the movie has one major drawback, it is too long for the common man. The action is developing too slowly, which, unfortunately, is very discouraging today.
A spectacular and thrilling adventure, Superman Returns attempts to clean the slate and return to Richard Donner’s original vision. After leaving Earth to search the remains of Krypon, Superman returns to find that Lois Lane is now a single mother and Lex Luthor has been freed from prison and is working on a new diabolical scheme. Starring Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, Parker Posey, and newcomer Brandon Routh, the film has an incredible cast that does a good job at reprising the iconic roles of the series; Bosworth in particular really gives a strong and dynamic performance as Lois Lane. And, the special effects are quite impressive, especially in depicting Superman’s powers. Additionally, John Ottman has crafted an outstanding score that’s powerful and carries the spirit of John Williams’ original. The plot’s rather mundane, but overall Superman Returns is entertaining and action-packed, and brings new energy to the franchise.
This is so long and boring. The little action we get is great but this kept going on.
Could have been better. Not that bad like most of people say but definitely could’ve been much better. 5/10
this movie is okay not nearly as bad as some people like to say
it gets overshadowed by others movies
very easily I appreciate it for being as risky not and non-traditional as it was
some of the plot points were just not the usual cup of tea for Superman movies and I kind of like that
I enjoyed Kevin Spacey and Brandon
as Lex and Superman respectively
this movie needed more action
overall it felt more like a drama then a action movie

When Kal Penn (Harold and Kumar) plays a henchman, you know the casting is all wrong. While the Luther evil plot, is like Superman 1 all over again.
Still, Kevin Spacey is way better than Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luther. While the film has it’s moments of excitement and heart.
