Super 8 2011

Super entertaining film, at least until the final act, which can't live up to what's come earlier.

The interaction between the kids is so good, the nostalgia of the bygone 1980's so thick, that the finale's CGI monster thrills fall short. Not that anything is wrong with how the movie wraps up, it just can't compare to the relationships we examined up to that point.

The kid actors are seriously good. In fact, Abrams isn't just channeling Speilberg, he's copying him. This is E.T. with a nastier alien. And the thrills generated by the train crash shown in the trailer are nothing next to the full-length crash, which is the highlight of the movie as far as I'm concerned.

The parallels to Netflix's Stranger Things are amazing. Netflix really chose a good enough movie as the show's influence. It's somehow unrealistic in a lot of ways but it's still a fine movie for a rainy evening.

It was like watch E.T and The Goonies at the same time, but with the knowledge we have nowadays.
I really enjoyed it and Michael Giachinno was wonderful as always.
J.J Abrams abusing of lens flare, as expected, but it wasn't a bad thing most of the time.

loading replies

I found this JJAbrams popcorn flick disappointing. The trailers and reviews suggested a classic Spielberg-crafted ET/Goonies story, but though it began like that, followed by what is probably the most spectacular train derailment scene in any movie, it then slowly devolves into a bland monster vs military script with no character development and no substance. Not deserving of Spielberg's name.

Stranger Things: The Movie (2011)

It's fun, but forgettable, and that really sucks. I want to give it a higher rating.

Super 8 pretty much was going for what Stranger Things succeeded at better. There’s a touching story here but Stranger Things is a better love letter to Spielberg.
The movie is Romeo and Juliet except with an escaped alien. Joe likes Alice but their parents don’t want them hanging out. Since Alice’s dad got drunk and killed Joe’s mom in a car crash.
A little too much of the movie is about that and moving on. That it outshadows the Sci-Fi aspect. As well as the love letter to Spielberg aspect.
Seeing the movie again. I do have more respect for it though. I also realize that as a series, Stranger Things has way more time to work with. Super 8 is a sweet movie that is good at pushing out happy tears but that’s mostly it.

I loved the filme but I don't know why I still feel is missing something. I don't know what. I really got stunned with the train scene... That's a great job of JJ and Spielberg but just like someone has already said... it's not E.T.

amazing =) For a while I was brough back to the past... The Goonies comes to mind, E.T to.. even Stand By me!

loading replies

It's a fun action alien monster mystery movie that feels distinctly Stranger Things from about a decade before the show existed, and with a lot more lens flare.

loading replies

I definitely see how people are comparing this to stranger things. If you are a fan of stranger things, than you’ll definitely enjoy this movie.

"She used to look at me... this way, like really look... and I just knew I was there... that I existed."

A fun homage to the 70's-80's kid adventure movies. Maybe it was made for people like me because I love E.T. and The Goonies, but the kids were perfect for these roles and I had a good time watching it.

loading replies

One of the greats.. Although not many realize this is an unofficial Goonies sequel...

loading replies

Like if Stephen King wrote The Iron Giant.

The reliance on formula and trope doesn't completely drain all the interest from this polished adventure film, but it does make of it a movie model and not a model movie.

one of the worst movies i have ever seen

Fun 70s style Sci-fi you used to watch on Sunday afternoon.

For better or for worse, this certainly wasn't what I was expecting. At times an innocent, slice of life glimpse back at childhood in the very late 1970s, the film's sudden, jolting leaps into completely different genres left me disoriented and on-edge for its duration. Mixing equal parts of The Goonies, Cloverfield, ET and Red Dawn in the same blender, the final product admittedly feels a bit blotchy and uneven. Rather than running from the stereotypes inherent in each ingredient, like a cast of minors fleeing a destructive unseen monster, Super 8 wears them boldly on its chest like a badge of honor.

In many ways this plays out like a picture from the distant past, more concerned with upping the ante and bringing an excess of action and adventure than delivering any messages beneath the surface. A broad, varied leading cast toes the line between strong characterization and over-sharing, while their less-than-stellar supporting characters bring the cheese in lethal doses. It's a fantastic popcorn muncher with a fascinating knack for the unpredictable, but much, much more shallow than anything else in the Abrams catalog. Fun for a single viewing, but I doubt I'll be back for more.

It’s rarely a good sign when a film hides itself in a cloak of mystery during its promotional campaign. As such, Super 8 is a bastion of confusion and misdirection. It’s as if the film itself doesn’t know what it wants to be. And while it’s a well-crafted film, it doesn’t feel authentic; as if the characters themselves are moving between different films. Yet, it stays together enough to be entertaining and a few of the actors (Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler) are able to draw the audience into their stories. While Super 8 has its problems, overall it manages to deliver a fun adventure.

I like special effects too much, and that's why I give it a 7/10. Unfortunately, I saw many boring parts (especially the first hour of the movie).

loading replies

If the 2nd half of the movie had half as much of the idea and quality of the first half, people would probably consider this a much better movie. But instead, it devolves from small town interesting train crash with great character, to just an army vs. alien 'here comes dad to rescue the day!' mess of a movie and wraps it all up in a lets not bother to explain anything further kind of ending

loading replies

But if it is E.T.

loading replies

"Super 8" is a J.J. Abrams film with Spielberg's trademarks all over it. Yep, this movie is nostalgic if you saw Spielberg's old movies and it's good to see another one like it.

I liked the thriller line of this film. it keeps an expectation to know what is causing the attacks and how the monster looks like. My favorite scene is the penultimate. there shows all the sweet side, and a touching connection to the monster with humans because he just wanted help and no one understood. Please let us love each other more, and make a better world for all.

I liked it, E.T. for grownups kinda..

Super intense!

Well, this movie starts ok, but later became the typical stereotype of an evil alien and the rest everybody alreay knows.
But JJ is a genius, he know how to write and directed a movie, but, well I was expecting more.

Watchable, but IMO it's just a contemporary ET

loading replies

Like some other reviewers I almost liked it a lot, but something seemed to be missing.. There are some incredible scenes, a story that could be fantastic, the kid actors are very good, but somehow it didn't fit together for me. At the end of the movie I was not satisfied at all with the story (I also simply didn't like the ending, but that's another thing), and kept wondering what I missed.. Still not sure what to make of the movie as a whole..

I Loved this movie, train crash was brill going through the speakers!!!

I agree with other shouts, its a combination of E.T. and The Goonies. Definitely one of the better blockbusters to have come out this summer.

Once you watched the movie you should keep watching. There is a special surprise in the credits.

My only concern with this movie is the fact that it seemed like scenes where missing. Given another 30 or 60 minutes, this movie would amazing.

Wow, absolutely stunning. It felt like I was being showered with infinite bliss.

The fact that J.J. Abrams is the writer and director and that Steven Spielberg is a producer is reason enough for me to watch this once it becomes available.
