Stranger at the Gate 2022

This short film is guaranteed to resonate quite differently depending on the viewer. If you are here trying to decide whether to watch it, all I can suggest is: do not in advance read details about the "plot" or the story behind it. From a filmmaking point of view, the key is to experience the gradual revelation of the story over its half-hour runtime. That's what makes it a good (award-nomination-worthy) film.

I'm not sure what this short documentary is trying to say. Somehow, the roles of terrorist and victim are reversed here. Along the lines of: "As an immigrant, you always have to be extra nice, then racist attackers will leave you alone."By implication, I'm wondering if the point here is that victims of racist attacks are partly to blame because they weren't nice enough? Yikes! The guy obviously had mental issues; after all, he wanted to kill over 200 people. I'm glad he didn't and turned his life around, but I still don't feel for him. The documentary itself is also kept pretty simple. People are talking into the camera; there is not much room for creativity. Combined with the questionable message, it's all pretty dull and definitely not Oscar-worthy.
