Stillwater 2021

This is a really good movie, better than it's being rated. McCarthy wrote and directed Spotlight and was a creator on The Loudest Voice in the Room. It's sweet and depressing and everything is done well in it. It's not an action movie and it's slow and long, but it's wonderful.

Stillwater never quite feels right. It could have been good, but ultimately settles for a set of social statements that aren't really all that true. Ultimately, Stillwater is a film that attempts to make a statement about the need to better understand poor white Midwesterners. As a poor white Midwesterner, I'm all for better attempts by coastal elites to understand groups that have been largely misunderstood/left behind, but this film recycles too many stereotypes and problematic assumptions to be really useful. It's a bit like Wind River, a fine attempt, but much more is needed (preferably from people in the groups in question).

Full disclosure, I think Matt Damon is one of the most undervalued actors in the business. Just look at his range of performances - the butt of the joke in OCEANS, a man reduced in DOWNSIZING, a meticulous and idealistic car designer in FORD V FERRARI, an action star in the BOURNE franchise, and now, a redneck American trying to make good for his daughter in a foreign world. Matt Damon is a good actor. This is a good movie. The acting is right on it’s mark. The tone is gritty. The pace is heartfelt but real. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10.

this is loosely based on the Amanda Knox story, but by changing the names and location they don't have to pay her for it Hollywood at its greedy best......back to the film, its just average TBH. 5 out of 10. its like at least 40 mins too long.

Wow, I honestly really enjoyed this movie!

A solid, character-driven crime thriller which asks some poignant questions about right and wrong, and what we ultimately give up to meet those ideals. Some great chemistry between the leads, and the mystery plot device keeps the pace rolling throughout. Solid movie, surprised it's tracking at a 6.5/10. It's much better than that.

Solid drama. Well written. It is rare for an American movie shot in Europe not to represent other countries as postcards for tourists. That bothers me a lot. They don't do that in this movie. Marseille is real. They show the so called "banlieu", French suburbs, multiethnic and problematic hoods.
This enters in my list of favorite American movies set in Europe, together with The talented Mr. Ripley (Matt Damon starring there too, no coincidence), Call me by your name (but the dorector is Italian so it doesn't really count), Saving private Ryan, The English patient and a few others.

A great movie with Matt Damon's acting on point(as an outsider) .Miss these kind of casual-watch movies of 2010's..A Nice introspective movie.

Liked it more than I thought I would.

Matt Damon does a great job. Plays it subtle without going melodramatic.

This movie is boring and dull. I don’t know whether it was done in purpose, in order to appeal to a European audience or not. It just doesn’t feel right.

Matt Damon did a wonderful rendition of an Okie. Other than his acting and the French culture which was well presented, it was dull and disheartening. No redemption and a predictable ending. Could have been about 90 minutes and covered the same ideas.

Decent movie, but I think it ultimately fails to deliver because of Main Character Syndrome.
If you want to show an American being the foreigner, then have the balls to not make him the main character. Imagine if whenever he was in France, the POV was not his own. Maybe that would've helped American audiences experience what it's like to be on the "other" side.

If it were a French film, it would have fallen into all the clichés. Here, this is not the case. The film was able to show Marseille in its beauty and its ugliness. The acting performances of Matt Damon and Lilou Siauvaud are really good.

Matt Damon and Abigail Breslin star in the crime drama Stillwater. When his daughter is convicted of murder while studying abroad in France, Bill Baker goes to visit her in prison and attempts to exonerate her when her lawyer refuses to pursue the case any further. Damon gives an incredibly strong performance, and Breslin is pretty good as well. But the plot meanders a bit too much and loses focus. Also, there’s an attempt to makes some political commentary that comes off as rather awkward and muddled. It has a few compelling moments, but overall Stillwater is an underwhelming film.

i dont like it, it is quite boring.

Could have been 30 minutes shorter. Needed Google translate to work out what was going on half the time. Disappointing.

Enjoyed it. A little long but not egregious.

Very solid performances by all involved.

7.5/10

I really wish this movie didn't have to end this way.

I had hopes for this movie, but it's boring and not good.

Overlong by about half an hour but this is still a decent, albeit meandering drama.

Like playing small stakes poker, it gets interesting at times and tense at others, but in the end you don't feel invested.

This Amanda Knox-over story is mostly only interesting for the fine acting (Matt Damon is so underrated y'all and French actress Camille Cottin is amazing in whatever she chooses to grace her presence with).

I think I'd rather this had been a film about the fictitious band in Almost Famous.

People that were expecting Taken will be disappointed but I was invested in the characters. Which is rare these days.

I would have like a more open ended ending, though. I now some people dislike that but keep the audience guessing if the daughter was responsible or not.

It was definitely probably too long but I appreciated we didn't get a "happy" ending. He found a good women, life, and could have been a great father figure to that little girl but he did some weird shit to help his other daughter. Usually, they would tie this all up with a happy ending for the main character but they left you as it would be. He is back home with his loser of a daughter and ended up not in the happy life he probably deserved. Terrible but I appreciate it.

Really good movie. It's a sad movie, and not at all a thriller, like it has been described, but nevertheless great acting all around. There are some things that aren't resolved, like where's the guy in the end that actually did kill the girl, and what are the police doing to find him, but that isn't really as important for the story, and not really what the movie is about... Despite being a bit slow, I loved it....

This movie is loooong. It plods along fairly slow, but it's not dis-interesting... it just takes a while to tell a story that might have been wrapped up in 1hr 45 mins. I didn't love it, but didn't hate it either.

At least it wasn't a remake of something that's already been made before ie: 95% of Hollywood movies.
Good acting, decent story
6.5/10

It's Matt. What do you expect? Perfection as always!

Stereotypical and anti-American. Take-away line: "Did you vote for Trump?"

I thought this was quite good but also left me wanting a little more. Damon is great as is the little girl playing Maya. High 7.2 rating from me. It could have been a little more engaging in spots, but I think the tone was deliberately set this way. Some will like it others will find it depressing and boring. I'm grading it higher than I believe I normally would based on the spots I really did enjoy.
