Horrifying that this is actually happening in the world. And mind boggling that more people are affected by slavery now than when it was legal.
It also sickens me that they had to battle for 5 years for this film to be shown.
It's an objectively well made and well acted movie that I really enjoyed. The plot is well structured, fast paced, and dialog well written.
It has the moral imperative to end sex trafficking but it's not through heavy handed guilt tripping, but through telling a true story about a man who made personal sacrifices to do the right thing and courageously go into danger to be a genuine hero. I think anyone who has any sense of altruism will leave this movie inspired to take action against this truly heinous evil that is real and happening now. Go see this movie.
More than just a well-made movie, this is a critically important piece of cinema that you must see and share with others.

I’d love to judge this as just another b-movie in the same vein as Taken, but the constant dogwhistling towards its easily manipulated audience makes that impossible for me. By most academic standards, this film can be defined as a propaganda piece. That doesn’t have to be the be-all and end-all; Top Gun is still an acceptable film despite questionable financial & script interference from the military. However, this thing is so clearly disingenuous and uninformed about its own subject matter, reducing a complex, global issue to weird looking pedo people & foreigners bad, white blonde Christian American good. I wouldn’t care as much if it was just a tight, unassuming thriller, but this thing clearly tries to have serious dramatic implications in its subtext. All of the emotions ring false, especially the scene where Caviezel’s motivation is revealed to be some divine intervention made me laugh really hard. The dialogue and acting are generally garbage, I can’t think of a single scene where I felt like I was watching something authentic because there is so little nuance to any of it. The score doesn’t help either, which is often overblown to comical proportions. The cinematography, on the other hand, is pretty decent and probably the best thing about the movie. Again, I’d welcome a real movie about child traffic, something in the same vein as Sicario, however I cannot get behind this bottom tier trash.

Movie was great and sad. The acting was good, cinematographic was good and the story was excellent. Tim and his wife are people that we don't see everyday. "Not all heroes wear capes". Hard to believe that this thing happens everywhere including the states. I have kids and never leave them alone.

This movie just showed the world how much our society is corrupted. People are badly reviewing the movie alleging that it is far-right propaganda when it doesn't even try to talk about politics, it's a problem that is universal across ALL the political spectrums, CHILD TRAFFIC. Watched it today in theaters. I can't come up with words that will give this movie justice. The movie never shows anything graphic or too hard to watch. It lets your imagination fill in the gaps (which is more graphic imo) but you can take your 13+ kid and you wouldn't have to cover their eyes.
Edit: Changed the Rating from a 9 to a 10. I'm still thinking about this movies message a few hours after.
Edit July 17, 2023: This movie stayed with me, even while trying to sleep. It kept me up at night. The last time a movie did that to me was when I was 12 watching "IT" in a hospital alone and didn't know how to change the channel. The message is strong, but the movie is a must watch.
Sound of Freedom is more painful than repetitive kicks to the groin for 131 minutes; but the beating is valuable. Change does not happen without awareness. This film has a message that must be felt and highlights a problem that needs to be solved. See this movie and do something to help.

Unlike many, I went into the theater to see this movie with no primer. The only message I got from this movie was "God does not like child sex trafficking and we should do something about it", and I still don't know what this movie was trying to say other than that, because quite frankly, I don't care. I've heard the lead actor Jim Caviezel is connected to the whole QAnon conspiracy craze, and I feel like that's the only reason he felt the need to add the post-credit ticket mutual aid section to the film, because while it's important to understand the importance of issues like child sex trafficking, I do not understand why else the American political right-wing would latch onto this movie other than if there was some hint in the movie they agreed with that just I didn't get that was connected to the right wing media's obsession with covering this movie and supporting it. My father made me go see it before I left home for college. That's the only reason I went to see it. It's an okay movie, but I wouldn't give it a score any higher than a 5/10.

The movie is pretty good, if slightly overrated. There are some pacing issues in the first half that make it feel 30 to 40 minutes longer than it is, but the only way it'll knock your socks off is emotionally, because of the heaviness of the subject matter. There are no Qanon conspiracy theories or any craziness like that in the film itself, just a fine (if somewhat embellished/compiled) story about rescuing children from sex trafficking. Both the acting and cinematography are impressive, which exceeded my expectations because both are better than in The Chosen, Angel Studios' other major project, which has even higher ratings and reviews.
This is certainly a heavy watch for obvious reasons, so this isn't gonna be the film you're gonna wanna rewatch too soon after seeing it the first time, but it'll probably stick with you more than anything else you see in theaters this year.
Great story, performances, and cinematography. A bit heavy-handed and clumsy at times, but that didn't stop me from crying my eyes out. We need more movies like this, about things that actually matter.

Obviously the movie is not fully factual. But that's just Hollywood. Movies like Argo and The Social Network take liberties with their source material, but I don't see anyone complaining.
Caviezel and Ballard may have some crazy views. But I don't see why that should affect my appreciation of this movie.

I went to see this with friends as their movie choice and didn’t look into or hear anything about it other than the basic plot. Without looking into any controversy around it, I thought the film was good. I’m sure it’s a typical Hollywood version of a true story with stretches of truth but it was well acted.

Well acted (by a Q-anon nut job actor), based on real person and events (barely), piece of MAGA right wing conservative trash, nonetheless an entertaining/horrifying watch on a horrible subject.
I hesitate to comment, as the comments of this movie seem to be infested with Q-Anon crazies filling their pants with glee about a known Q-Anon-believer starring in a halfway decent movie. Because yes: This film is somewhat mired in controversy as Caviezel is an admitted Q-Anon-believer. This, however, does not echo in the movie. Unless you think all C.S.A. is a conspiracy, in which case I feel for you deeply.
And yes: Halfway decent, because even though (or because of) the movie is billed as 'low budget', it's still a very decent movie to watch! The theme around kidnapping and exploiting children is approached with some care, but without pulling punches. Not sensationalist, but not shying away from the realities of this "business". So for that bit: More that worth the watch, whatever your stance on the actor is. The last part of the movie is a bit of a let-down though. The film takes a wrong turn somewhere, and turns into an action romp but fails to take in account the earlier tone. So if you want to watch a good-to-great movie: Stop watching the moment he goes into the jungle. If you are in for a fair-but-flawed movie: Watch it all.
All in all worth your time, unless you are hung up on the cuckoo idea's of the main character.

Sound of Freedom brings the awful world of child sex trafficking to the forefront, in a well told story regarding Homeland Security Agent Tim Ballard's quest to not just capture the pedophiles but to recover and safe the children. After saying one kid, Tim makes finding his sister (who is still missing) a priority, and in the process finds ways to potentially save many more children.
As I said, it's a well made film. The first 45 minutes I found really difficult just due to the subject matter. I've seen plenty of films with difficult subjects but this one was directed well, getting to me in a way other films haven't. Jim Caviezel does a good job in the lead role, and is believable in his motivations to save one more kid. Something to note, is that this is a very loose story. Allegations have come out about the real Tim Ballard that are not touched on in this film. Other than that aspect, I was able to really enjoy Sound of Freedom for what it was, and for shining more light on an evil industry.

It actually feels kinda weird to give such a high rating to a movie that portraits this subject. The chills went up my spine from the moment they took pictures of these kids. As a father of a 14 yo girl I shouldn't be surprised that some tears were running down my face and am still having a twisted gut feeling. Guess I'm not going to bed anytime soon.

This is one of those movies that you can't enjoy. The theme is too terrible, too true, too painful. It is not even a movie that despite the bad leaves you hope; after all, it's only a few, a handful, against lots of evil people. Alejandro Monteverde writes and directs this film that comes with a campaign like I have never seen before: the controversy over whether they tried to censor it and no big studio wanted it despite the importance of viewing it by the public, the media campaign to see "the movie that they do not want you to see", and the campaign to donate money so that people without resources can go to the movies for free. The production of 14 million that has raised 182 million. With all of the above, it's a shame the script isn't that good; Although it is not disastrous, the construction of the story becomes very fast at times, with unconnected elements. The music score seemed to me full of common places, although the soundtrack did seem different and appropriate to me. I thought Jim Caviezel as the lead was great in his portrayal of Tim Ballard, but I didn't like the cinematography that exaggerated the close-up framing. Lucas Ávila and Cristal Aparicio as the brothers around whom the story revolves are wonderful. Finally, something that is appreciated and that marks a very clear difference with Hollywood movies is the subtlety with which this depraved subject is portrayed, because, as they have already said in interviews, they sought to care for the innocence of children and leave in the spectator's imagination the horridity of the scenes; thank you thank you thank you. Watch it. It could and should have been better, but it's worth going to the movies.
I wasn’t sure I could watch this movie because of my own childhood trauma, but it takes an incredibly important topic, that needs public attention, and sensitively tells it with care of its audience. Child Sex Trafficking is the #1 most lucrative global crime of our time, and the most hidden from public outcry. This movie anchors the telling in one man’s passion for not only catching the perpetrators but rescuing their victims. Its aim is not to shine the spotlight on heroics but to expose the insidious evil at its core. It is told with passion and outrage. Jim Caviezel and Bill Camp are perfectly cast and their characters are anchors for the drama. The heart of the film, though, is rooted in the wonderful performances of José Zúñiga, Cristal Aparicio and Lucás Ávila, who play, respectively, a father of stolen children, his 11 year old daughter and an 8 year old son. The movie broke my soul. Fantastic music, absolutely fantastic music score, Tim was awesome, the direction was really good, for hard stomachs and not for stupid people.
The film addresses an important topic in the worst way possible. It is a story that uses the manipulation of emotions with outstanding impudence, that is not afraid of falling into Manichaeisms and even representations with a certain racist tone (American white man saves poor Latino children). In its favor it has an excellent soundtrack by the Spanish composer Javier Navarrete, who provides with more honesty the religious background of the proposal, and a certain dark western tone that provides some elegance to the story. It is a missed opportunity that is harmed by the absolute dedication to a protagonist that is too flat.

It was a good movie, but to be honest; not that different from ones like Taken. The only two differences are the ages of the kidnapped and the fact that this is an actual true story. So, what is really worrying is why has it shaken up so much the media? The movie doesn't target any person, institution or group of people in the US for example; all the "bad guys" are foreigners in central and south America. So, why the directives to bomb review and give bad press to the movie? We all know the answer, but is truly worrying

Watching this is a roller coaster of rage and hope. Very confronting topic. What’s truly horrifying is so many out there attempting to discredit the events of this film. Clearly flying too close to the mark. I hope someone looks into each and one of them.
I need to take something out of the way first: Eduardo Verastegui and Mel Gibson (producers) are definitely NOT on my nice list. Their religious agenda will always be too obvious, and quite honestly, I was expecting it in this film.
That said, I must admit that this film is very well done! They kept the religious bullsh*t to the bare minimum. What matters here is the story and the performances, which I can say are STELLAR! The movie was made to BREAK… YOUR… HEART.
It’s sad yet full of hope. And the kids did an amazing job. My kudos to them! Seeing their eyes filled with such innocence and sadness was gut wrenching.

After all the Qanon controversy building this film up, I have no choice but to feel disappointed that the film in fact DOESN'T go into that topic. There's absolutely zero implication of powerful American figures being involved and actually only centers on Mexicans. The actual film was also kinda disappointing - it's certainly good but I didn't like the way it was directed and edited (too many close-ups and fades). It also feels very much like a b-movie (especially in the writing and pacing) which is fine but holds it back from becoming anything grand in my opinion.

Great movie. Tim Ballard gave up a lot including the possibility of being killed to save these kids, but saving 150 total, out of millions ever year is just a drop in the bucket.

Not the best movie on the subject matter, but it was effective in telling the story. This should be seen as a bookend with Spotlight to understand the aftereffects of trauma.
