Save Our Souls: The Titanic Inquiry is a riveting courtroom drama. Based on a play and using the testimonies form the British Wreck Commission on Titanic, the film follows the investigation into the accusations that the crew of the SS California witnessed the distress rockets of the Titanic and failed to come to its aid. Some of the acting is weak, but the courtroom scenes can be quite intense and powerful. And while the sets are rather spartan, co-writer/direction Michael McDowell is able to create moments of tension and suspense as witnesses are questioned and revelations come to light. However, he does take some liberties, painting clear heroes and villains (particularly in the fictional non-courtroom scenes). It’s a little raw and underdeveloped, but Save Our Souls: The Titanic Inquiry is a compelling look at on often forgot part of the Titanic disaster.
