Slower than it needed to be and no real character development.
Wow! Even the pole dancing was boring!
Sofia Coppolas style can be very hit or miss, but works here in underlining the lonely existence. There isn't a ton of plot, but that's half expected for Coppolas movies. Even if I would have liked more focus and depth with the relationship with the daughter, it works decently well as a small snapshot of a longer story and life kind of movie.
Very slow dumn movie!
That was pretty pointless...
I expected a drama with heavy character development but with a very minimalistic take. At least I got that last part right. Besides the acting (especially by Elle Fanning) this was a waste of time.
This was the only I was still missing from Sofia Coppola and I expected a lot more from it.
Somewhere is a film about a famous Hollywood actor who lives in a hotel room and besides movies what he does best is to party, drink, have sex with strangers and nothing much. Behind all of that, his life is actually sad and full of emptiness. When his daughter comes to spend some time with him he actually realizes that there's more important things than the insignificant life he has taken.
The pace is not the best. I totally understand what Sofia Coppola was trying to demonstrate. The film has some meaningful scenes that seem to last forever and all of those specific scenes have a point but that was not enough. The intention was to show the boring and pointless life of the main character, but she should have turned it into something a little bit more dynamic without taking that idea away.
What bothered me the most was the fact the characters were poorly developed. We never get to know some important aspects of the relationships between them.
The message that it tries to pass was not transmitted strongly enough what unfortunately makes it kind of pointless. The emotions does not pass through the screen and you really don't really care about what they are doing.
If you think about it, you can find some similarities with Lost in Translation but the truth is that Somewhere does not grow in ourselves like the other does. It is a film that needed more depth.

I get that the guy's life was supposed to be boring but that didn't mean the movie needed to be.
Plus, there's several scenes that just don't seem to end where you end up yelling "I get the point already!"
