Americans saying that "original" was better than this one. Little do they know that "Alive" wasn't the first film about this accident. Actually, a mexican movie released in 1976 was the first one ever made and it wasn't bad at all.
Yes, this version is slow paced and with less action than previous movies, specially the american one, but technically and emotionally is way above the first two movies. J. A. Bayona goes deeper in the emotional part of each character, this time, using the real names of the survivors, besides, it was filmed in part in the same spot where the accident took place. Hey, we even have cameos of some of the survivors.
Sorry, but people saying this "remake" is bad, is just lazy people that don't like to read subtitles. This movie will be nominated for an Oscar, I can tell you that.
New coat of paint, same old story. If I were to pick a version to keep it would be this one though. It's done in a very emotional and bleak way. It got a few emotional reactions out of me but what was holding me back from the full experience was the familiarity with the story. You just know how all of this is going down and it's all the same themes. It's a stunning movie, there's no doubt about that. Love the wide shots showing us how small the characters are compared to the vast ice age. The characters all look the same (haircuts, height, build) so it's difficult to tell them apart but I liked the team aspect and them working together to survive. The plane sequence and the avalanche are the most terrifying things i've seen this year for sure and it'll unlock a new fear of airplanes. Very long. Satisfying and touching ending. A good watch.
Well, this one just really pulls at your heartstrings. Really well filmed and acted, you really get to care about the characters and feel the desperation with them.
Easy recommendation.
Even if you think you know this story, it was so well done that you feel so much -- the harrowing fear, the overwhelming despair, the bittersweet hope, the anger of the unfairness, the grief, the awe in the face of nature, the uncertainty. Excellent performances and use of the environment. Some interesting choices made to draw a line between faith, survival, community and personal moral code. I cried at the end.
girngos saying that this is a remake or that the Hollywood version is better bruh, for once story was told by Latin American people from a latam perspective in Spanish not from a gringo blockbuster perspective
A tough watch at times but also an inspirational one as this true story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
I really have never had such a bad time with a movie. It is literally watching people suffer non-stop. Artistically it seems like a work of art to me, the scenes, the actors, absolutely everything…. I didn't know this movie was going to be so brutal, I thought it would be lighter... For everyone who goes to see it, prepare yourself. Because seeing people suffer is very hard.
Excellent movie. Very emotional and shocking. It should easily win the Oscar for best foreign film.
What a fucked up cannibalistic orgy this was.
Terrifying, horrific, disturbing, claustrophobic and emotional. Everything about this movie is simply magnificent, from all the amazing performances, set design, fantastic hair & makeup(shout-out to them) and flawless writing. I have to mention the plane crash scene, wow honestly I can't think of a better shot than any other movie I've seen to date.
The ending got me real good :sob:.
I‘ve read Nando Parrado‘s book years ago and it was an extremely captivating read. When I saw this movie on Netflix I just had to watch it. It is very well done and tells the story quite faithfully as far ad I can tell. Not a fun watch but a story that you just can‘t ignore.
A lot of people comparing the previous film to this one. Nothing to do with that! This is simply a real story, man!! It's the same as watching two World War II documentaries and saying that one was better than the other. You could even say it was bad, however, in relation to a film, then it's pushing the envelope. I never watched this infamous film before. But about this film here, I take off my hat and applaud it standing up. It is an excellent film, and I believe that it must have faithfully portrayed the real events. If the other film is good too, and even better than this one!, I will also give credit to it. But not because it's better than this one, but because it was a good film. Saying that the pacing of this film is slow! What do you mean?, people who say that! Did you want a Star Wars or Marvel rhythm here? Did you want the characters to make canned script jokes? Did you want cannibal jokes?
This film, for me, along with the film Sanctum (2011), were the best superhero films I've ever seen in the cinema. Who are the Avengers or Superman next to these guys? They are just fiction. We have real heroes here. Who faced challenges much greater than themselves and still survived.
Congratulations to the filmmakers!
One of the best movies i have seen in a while.directing was superb, and it felt so realistic.the emotions are everywhere you can't take your eyes from the screen.also the performances from everyone were above great. 8.7/10
I have not seen the original movie, but I don't care, this was an excellent true-story thriller, kept us on the edge of our seats from beginning till end. Can recommend if you watch it without any expectations
I think I still prefer ‘Alive’. Maybe because 30yrs ago I skipped school with my best friend to watch it at the Chester Odeon. Alive is Hollywoods take on this amazing story and a more palatable version. But this is more visceral, more gritty and a very good film. I’m glad it’s been retold in this way. The ending is incredibly moving. Watch and be inspired.
This remake evokes none of emotion or intensity of the 1993 Film (https://trakt.tv/movies/alive-1993), I was truly bored the entire time; it was very hard to follow.
Society of the Snow is an amazing and heart-wrenching story. Although heavy, the film is beautiful and the acting is superb. This deserved a wide theatrical release and is truly one of the best movies of 2023.
An amazing and emotional story. Well acted with breath taking and sometimes very harsh scenery. Hat's off to the cast and crew. Excellent! What a journey for the survivors. :thumbsup_tone1:
Excelent movie! It should win the Oscar. Great cast and director Bayona.
what a Excellent movie and also a sad movie.
Just another reg-urge remake to make a little money on the next generation. The original is much better and this story is the type that can only be told once. ALIVE [1993] https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106246/
Great movie, despite the fact that it’s a long one. Recommend it!
I thought it was well done.
There are a few movies which HAS TO BE SEEN because of its story. This is one of them, a story of HUMANITY which has to be spread around the world. I don't care of this is or isn't the original. IT IS A GOOD MOVIE after all.
one of the most realistic movies i've ever watched. that plane crush scene was just... unbelievably amazing
It's difficult to critique a story like this. A harrowing and heart breaking, but also awe inspiring tale of friendship and survival. I remember seeing "Alive" during a grade 7 movie viewing. We chose it as a class with our teacher's permission and she was soon mortified at the graphic details our 12 yr old selves were subjected to. Fast forward 30 years and I'm watching the same story, but told quite differently. This version by Bayona chooses a more deliberate pace and emotional core. 8.0
Excellent movie. Much better than the 90s US version. Bleak, but also uplifting. Very worth your time.
Too much hype for a poor film. "Viven" is better for me.
I had never heard of this one until it popped up in my Movie Club, but I am happy to have been able to check it out! The shots are gorgeous and the story is great. It is a bit slow and drags from time to time, but the overall quality is undeniably great!
Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend
Boy, did I sob endlessly with this one :open_mouth::dash: feels weird to say, considering the horror and tragedy behind this but an actual masterpiece of a film
Harrowing and haunting, a truly horrifying disaster movie that is as equally terrifying as it is heartfelt and respectful. Most certainly not an enjoyable watch, but one that will grip and elate with its tale of survival and human persistence. Hard to believe that the majority of these actors are making their debut, and the effects of the ordeal will almost certainly get some love from usual award shows. Difficult viewing but great nonetheless.
I liked the film and everything in it, but the most amazing element was the makeup, definitely an award-winning achievement.
I haven’t seen Alive, or the original. This was a bit long but it was done very well.
What an amazing piece of art about friendships and survival
One of the most harrowing movies I’ve ever watched. Defo should come with a major trigger warning, especially for the scene where the plane actually crashes. Woo! Not sure how I feel now ….
Good film they wer so so lucky
Rated a Connor 5, normal 7
A well-beloved recent movie...and I did not like it one bit. This might be fairly controversial, but I genuinely struggled a lot to finish this movie. It seems weird to say this about something based on a true story, but this movie felt very familiar to me. I've seen a variety of crash and survival stories by now, and though this one is grounded in truth, it can't help but feel familiar to those other similar fictional stories. However, because it is chained to a true story, it struggles to take this story into a different direction than the types of survival stories you usually get. Most of the characters feel interchangeable, and I could not build an emotional connection to any of them. I knew the types of sacrifices that the characters would have to make, and beyond that, the movie doesn't actually delve into anything regarding sort of the social and power structures that arise after this type of event, despite its name and again those similar post-crash survival stories. The movie wants to be about the power of the human spirit, perseverance against immeasurable odds, but it doesn't earn that in my opinion. Instead, it relies on the nature of the real events it is based upon and the structure of this type of story, in the same way sports dramas or biopics try to create expectation just based on tropes versus mining new ground themselves. Because of that, it almost feels exploitative at times. The final straw to me is that the actual filmmaking technicals, e.g. the acting or the cinematography, never stand out either, making the whole thing a real slog to get through at 2.5 hours long.
The film focuses more on human emotions and the attempt to survive than its predecessor from '93. The lack of Hollywood stars gives it an additional human touch because we see the actors as ordinary people Like us.
Movies that can break me
Great movie but how can you smoke a cigarette and not start a fire
I've seen the old one, which was really good.
This one is just bad.
Like the inside of my filthy freezer: chilling, distressing and full of things I don't want to eat.
This well-known survival tale of the Uruguayan rugby team stranded in the Andes holds few surprises (unlike my freezer), but the directing, acting (mostly by unknowns), and stunning cinematography make the film one worth watching.
Goosebumps. Society of the Snow was a simple yet such an amazing movie. The visual effects were great. The make-up and hairstyling was breathtaking and disgusting. Exactly how it was supposed to be.
Michael Giacchino did it once again. The music underscored whats happening in the best possible way. Just incredible.
Cinematography was great as well, there were some great shots in this film.
I would most definitely recommend Society of the Snow.

All the gotta eat ppl to survive mo ies are great.... a different version of the same story! A plus!
based on real story , good cinematography and crash scene , sad and very impactful. still cannot accept the fact that one I thought would survive is dead.
dubbed but very watchable, I don't usually watch dubbed movies
Some parts were hard to swallow
A very nice remake. Nothing new. Im just sad that every time this event is remembered only the cannibalistic part gets the spot light. The psychological suffering, the reinsertion to society, the traumas they got for the rest of their life, the thing they learned while there like not to speak in high voices because of the avalanches, so many people took their own life because they couldn't cope with the situation. So much information unexploited.
Obviously overlong given how thin the premise is, and it’s not time spend in the best way. For example, I needed way more time with these characters before the plane crash, because so much of the emotional beats in the second half are neutered as I didn’t care about anyone. The focus here lies much more on the survival aspect instead, and it’s pretty generic in that regard. These are the type of scenes that have been done to death and this point, and Bayona doesn’t put his own spin on it. Still, aesthetically it’s very pleasing to look at, I think Bayona’s successfully captures something that feels similar to The Revenant which he’s clearly aiming for. However, for every moment that it feels like Inarritu, there’s about as much generic bloat that’ll remind you of Roland Emmerich. What doesn’t help in that regard is the score, which I found very Hollywood (sweeping, uplifting strings that feel misplaced/cheap; uninspired sad piano motifs), as well as some really unnecessary (and occasionally pretentious) use of narration. It’s not the worst thing in the world, however I think it stands no chance of winning best international feature next to Anatomy of a Fall, Past Lives or The Zone of Interest.
4.5/10
Pretty well directed but I'm worried film is finally losing if merely decent films are now bringing a fucking 4.1 letterboxd rating. I love Harmony Korine's optimism in saying all the mediums are all becoming one (games, visual arts and of course tv/film) all in service of entertainment but idk I want my cute cinematic masterpieces back pls. Somebody save us because now the Safdies have split up too!!!
I read the book "¡Viven!" and I still have it engraved, then I saw the movie shot in '93 and the same thing happens to me with many scenes and, now, with "La sociedad de la nieve", I have to admit that it has managed to transmit me even more the human part, outside the spectacular and epic. The stories, the doubts, the fears and their desperation and their struggle (not only for survival).
I was reluctant, despite the good opinion I have of Bayona, about retelling the story but I think it has been a success and I understand why the survivors and their families are so satisfied with the tone he has given to the film that is completely away from being a remake.
OMG this is why people hate Netflix! Why did they have to do that, you have the unimaginable and fantastic movie and then they come and say let's destroy that and make another one which of course will be on top 10 of every country, on lists "this is what people are watching right now" and all that marketing and promoting stuff of the now "un-original" and hateful Netflix.
I'm pretty angry about this remake
this is the only book I read in my life out side study ,and I loved to see it in visuals

the original was way better
