It has an engaging approach that turns an environmental drama into a Christmas dark comedy. The mixture of genres does not fully achieve balance, but when the script focuses on the third act, it builds a final part that is very emotional, and that makes us reflect on the importance that only five minutes can have. Lorne Balfe does an outstanding job, composing a Christmas soundtrack that hides large doses of irony.
Macabre to the core, what starts as a jovial evening with past friends quickly becomes a bleak yet almost too relevant look at the world in catastrophe. Not what I expected, and really enjoyed the slow reveal of what was truly happening. Some of the messages here will probably be interpreted differently now after everything that has happened in the real world, but as a dark drama comedy, this is a hit.
I..., I..., I went in blind. Just finished. I'm speechless, but I don't know if for better or worse.
I thought the performances were good, the kids were fantastic (Roman, well done). Lily-Rose as well.
There's nothing I can say without spoilers other than if you're at the halfway mark and bored, you can safely end it.
Personally, I couldn't look away.
Decent dark comedy with existential horror. It's funny, bleak, depressing and does a great job hiding what it’s actually about with its gleefulness. There are some good heart shattering moments too. Although I feel like sometimes it bites more than it can chew thematically, I really liked how it treats all these issues in a comical way. Please go in blind, trust me it's nothing like you expect!
I went into this completely blind, and I’m really glad I did. I had no idea where it was going and the super bleak comedic spin is a nice touch. I really can’t wait for the bad reads this movie is going to serve in this current climate and while it was shot before COVID, that message is still there. The last shot kind of ruins it but overall a bizarre ride.
I wish I had the last hour and a half of my life back. Ugh!
Good movie with a better ending. Could have been tighter and more comedic but I liked it. Not sure why other people have an issue with the ending. I'm all for not stopping till the fat lady sings.
Thought it was great, but the ending is a let-down considering present circumstances..
Damn this was heavy. It's like someone picked the end of The Mist and made a movie.
If you go blind watching this movie you will be so wonderful surprised! A brilliant dark comedy, it had me laughing with their gags, really good dialogues. I cannot recommend it to someone who do not appreciate some surreal dark humor, and on this movie you have it in a great amount. Even on the final dramatic moments, it has great laugh scenes.
A doomsday Christmas. I like a lot of the actors here. Some drab bits and some emotional and funny bits as well. Good stuff. Better than I expected to be sure. 6.5
Coping with the end of the world with British phlegm.
Often I watch movies on the basis of comments - the synposis is really only a theme, and people perceptions is more important.
For this one, that was a mistake. For me, the first 45 minutes was chatty dialogue , before the vague underlying story started to unfold, and then the implausible plot played out with very absolutely no surprises.
In my mind this was the drama / "horror" version of where a movie is based on a single joke, which them gets pushed well past the value it could have offered. This could have been a 22 minute story - but isn't
Although the film starts off a bit corny and starts to drag with the laughs mainly served up by the kids, it takes a sinister twist and by the end it has you asking yourself, what would you do?
Keep calm and swallow your suicide pill for Queen and country.
A bit surprised there weren't more murders in this bunch. The ending shot of Art was nice.
Most everyone in this movie was horrid (so, kudos on the acting if that was the aim) I wanted everyone to die and i got my wish. I'm sure there was a deeper meaning here, but i was too bored and annoyed to see it.
Very interesting concept but execution would be much better if the story was tighter and more opinionated.
worse movie of all time
did an anti-vaxxer write this script or what
Keira Knightley and Matthew Goode star in the subversive dark comedy Silent Night. On the eve of an impending ecological disaster a family gathers for one last Christmas. The film is surprisingly political, dealing with themes of environmentalism, medical ethics, and euthanasia. But the filmmakers do a good job at keeping the focus on the characters and never let the political issues overshadow them. Still, the plot is underdeveloped and leaves a lot intentionally vague or unaddressed. Also, the humor is rather morbid and crass; what little there is. A provocative and controversial film, Silent Night explores some interesting issues, but can be kind of trite and overly dramatic at times.
The ultimate irony to "Woke."
damn! this is one dark Xmas Movie....
Covid-19 vaccine: The Movie. Smart movie made in 2021. Took the inspiration and probably the lockdown from 2020 to make a one location movie with a star cast. Good ending. Lovely dystopian movie in a small setting. Very enjoyable
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Silent Night’:
Well that was a bleak and depressing watch. Not only did it all feel a bit hopeless… in the end, it felt a bit pointless too.
I’m all for not giving up. I wouldn’t have taken the pill either.
Was I the only one who saw that ending coming a mile away?
As the father of children of similar ages (the first of whom is also an Arthur!), it was easy for me to identify. In this context, try to watch this film without crying! Try not to wonder how you would handle that situation! What a shock when you start to realize! What extreme sadness! I love this film! No other has surprised and moved me so much.
Tonally confused at times but this is still an engrossing drama that is suitably bleak and troubling.
One the saddest and silliest films I’ve ever seen. I’m so sad and hopeless right now I can’t write anymore other than imagine Love Actually (an overrated British rom-com) but without any love — that’s this film.
An insteresting and dramatic film.
