Tough, rough prison movie, with a seemingly far-fetched premise...but who are we to judge? Prison changes a man, and what a man will do to protect his family could lead any of us to do the same.
Gritty, depressing, electric. A Waugh specialty.
I tend to gravitate to the stories he both writes and directs. It took me too long to finally watch this one. Solid stuff. 7.5
Pretty bad ass prison movie. It's a character piece, that (much like Breaking Bad) shows how a mild mannered everyman can transform into a criminal mastermind.
Well acted.
But more importantly, a not so subtle criticism of the goals penitentiary system present mostly in the US, and common to most of the western world. Is it there to punish or rehabilitate people? If the answer is to rehabilitate, the legislative (laws) and judiciary (D.A. and Courts) branches are doing a poor job.
If as shown by the movie a driver with an accident DUI don't stand a chance of getting type rehabilitation when Laws, Defense, Prosecution, and Courts advise him that the lesser evil is achieved by entering into a plea with the D.A. and accept he'll be punished with jail time.
Jails are not designed to rehabilitate but to contain and punish inmates, once you enter the system, one that is not designed to protect the inmate but to encourage antisocial behavior among inmates as part of the punishment. We, as a society, shouldn't expect anything but their deterioration as persons.
Anyone that believes that rehabilitation can arise from these conditions, is a fool or it's lying to himself out fear that those in the inside will be out on the street one day, and the only thing that jail has done is select and prepare the worst of them, "survival of the fittest".
The premise is ridiculous and the much of the movie just has too many holes....especially the end. If you watch the whole thing you'll be angry with yourself for wasting your life
Nikolai Coster-Waldau, of Game of Thrones fame, gives a committed and transformative lead performance that holds Shot Caller together.
A fairly fun, serviceable crime drama, Shot Caller feels a bit overlong and often predictable, but never boring. Despite some unnecessary subplots and some rushed character transformations, it's hard not to suggest this as a perfectly fine movie night.
Good movie. Little slow at times but good.
It's over. Forget I exist.
Jacob Harlon
Very disappointed. Movies are not meant to be realistic, but this is just over the top ridiculous. Movie is longer than it should be but than again rushed with the main characters development. And to say that is similar to breaking bad? What? It is not even close! There, we can see how one man is literally transformed through time, his struggle, disease... and here there is non of that! 5/10
Wow!, Bold, awesome, suspenseful, Raw
What's up with the number 13 and 27?
Better than expected and the kind of movie that sticks with you for a bit after watching.
Just saw ShotCaller on my VOD-Provider and had to make a review about it.
So the movie is about a man who ends in prison. And boy, do i buy (t)his story. It's good written and shows this kind of ongoing desaster.
And Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays the instrument completly. Fear, Anger, Hate. You get why the Character behaves that way.
compare to Brawl in Cell Block 99, this movie is more accurate and reasonable. Brawl99 on the other hand is rough, nineties-like and overexaggarted.
In the end it's a great movie.
Wow randomly started watching this on Netflix and it turned out really good!
So I expected this film to be pretty awful and only really watched it because of Coster-Waldau. And while I can't say that it is a great film, or even a very good one, I did find it an interesting take on the prison film. Also, it has Jon Bernthal, so that's a point for it in and of itself.
It is full of violence, fairly raw violence at that, but it is worth watching to see how the prison environment can make a criminal.
Called all the shots. A good watch.
I never watched a movie like this one It was amazing
Shot Caller is about a man who makes 1 mistake and his whole life changes because of it. Whether this can be real or not it is an intriguing movie. The movie starts with him being in jail and we don’t learn why until you’re a good part into the movie, it jumps back and forward from time to time, making it sometimes a bit hard to follow. The only way to know for sure here’s back in time is because he has less tattoo’s.
The acting is superb and it was refreshing to see Nicolaj as a different character as Jaimie.
I am still having a hard time to really be positive or negative about this movie, it feels to me like you have to see it more than once to fully grasp the movie. The story line was confusing sometimes with the flash backs, and action wise it was a whole lot less than Atomic Blonde, might have not been my smartest move to see those 2 just minutes apart.
I am not sure if shows an accurate picture of how things are done in prison, I can image things can be run like they propose in this one.
But something I didn’t truly get was why give everything up you worked so hard for all your life just to throw it all away when you make 1 mistake.
Perhaps it’s better I don’t know if this is true when you go through prison, although I do not think prison here in the Netherlands is as hard as it is in America.
It’s not a movie you really need to see in the theaters, it might even be better to watch it at home, and I don’t think it will be anything for the Oscar’s either.
I give this movie a 7 out of 10.
a stock broker who became a prison gangster with a life sentence w/o parole to protect his family.
really captivating.
