It’s quite clear what this is trying to be: a meta whodunnit comedy like Knives Out mixed with the quirk and visual style of early Wes Anderson. Is it charming? Yes. Is it funny? Yes, though the comedy does miss at times. Is it annoying? Also yes, but only sporadically. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the same panache as Wes Anderson, nor is it as clever and subversive as Knives Out. It kinda does that Matrix Resurrections thing where it points out all of its own cliches and genre trappings in the first act, but then goes on to embrace most of them. It all culminates in a third act that I thought was frankly underwhelming and predictable. What keeps it watchable are the performances, characters, editing, music and direction, but this should’ve been a lot bolder. A decent effort from a first time feature director, but let’s see if he can come up with something where he doesn’t lean on his influences so hard.

Almost as good as Knives Out! Fantastic cast and lots of witty banter, a worthwile watch

Ratings are kinda mean lol but perhaps I enjoyed it a little more since it’s a Saturday night after work and it was good to just switch off. Definitely see the shadows of Wes Anderson. It’s quirky and I do think it takes some wit to be able to play on tropes and cliches in a way that doesn’t make the audience cringe / feel that it’s a try hard. Some bits in the middle definitely did feel lacklustre / slow though.

A very bland and mediocre mystery movie that sh*ts on Agatha Christie almost constantly. And for what they show, they don't deserve a right to do so. Was it not for a few funny moments and an overall good performance from Saoirse Ronan, I would score this even lower. A lot of needless dialogue that's only there to fill up the dead air and pointless characters that overact like this was their first job. If you like Agatha Christie like mysteries, just avoid this.

This movie was really fun. It got a little slow at parts, but the beauty of the movie made it so that you were never bored. Saorise Ronan was fantastic in this as well, she really nailed her role and was genuinely funny througout. Adrien Brody nailed his parts as well, big time.

A fun period whodunit that, while failing to be as clever as it thinks it is, still manages to entertain through the use of some oddball chemistry that guides the film through its bumpier moments.

It's generally well made - the acting, editing, direction & use of music are definitely up to standard. Unfortunately, despite the strengths of those elements, it fails to leave a lasting impression due to an over-reliance on tropes and cliches. Don't get me wrong - it's still a fun piece of entertainment that certainly brought a smile to my face when it mattered. However, I imagine I'll forget it existed within a day or two of writing this.

The movie starts with the narrator talking about how boring and predictable whodunnits are and then proceeds to be a boring and predictable whodunnit.

[Agatha Christie getting trapped in her own world was the best thing to enjoy here.]

This film got a whole lot enjoyable with its excellent plot and such retro vibe. The colourful representation of the theatre made it a lot enjoyable. And you can't but make it through once you've started.

Agatha Christie meets Wes Anderson. It's not as fun as it sounds, but it's fun enough.

Having watched Glass Onion and this film in quick succession, I think it is safe to say that the original Knives Out remains the film to beat when to comes to the modern who-dun-it. Whereas Benoit Blanc's first outing had the benefit of a fiendishly clever central mystery, this film tries to earn its cleverness points with a tongue-in-cheek meta set-up. While these efforts aren't entirely wasted (Adrien Brody pitching his action packed finale was hilarious, and the payoff, though predictable, was still a fun moment), there's diminishing returns on every fourth-wall breaking wink at the audience. Beyond that, the ensemble of suspects feels underdeveloped, which is possibly a symptom of a runtime that left things feeling a tad rushed. At the end of the day, the entire who-dun-it element doesn't leave much of an impression, with all of the detective work feeling fairly straightforward. Luckily, the central performances from Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan were enough to keep me invested, as they both bring their comedic chops and sell their quirky, odd-couple partnership.

A relatively good film, there aren't many who done 'its these days aside form the newer renditions of Hercules Poirot movies, so I was eager to see this one, while it doesn't boast the same grandeur or splendour those films enjoy this was a pretty good take / homage to Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap"

The film has great styling, feel as well as some great humour every so often, what does let it down is it starts off great and then as you get further in it slows down before ramping up toward the end, still enjoyable but worth noting.

Had to turn it off, so boring

Well that was a fun watch, loved the script, that i thought was smart and good choice on cast that all worked well with each other and loved the style.

loading replies

Not quite the puzzle box of a movie that I expected but thanks to the witty script, it was still an enjoyable watch.

A light and funny story from people who really love cinema, theater, detective stories and traditions (“My Life in the Cinema” by this screenwriter is a must:eyes:). Probably should get you in the mood? Yes, it was not bad for me! With what grace all this the mixture is turned into a cocktail! Similar to "Noises Off" (1992)

Nice little whodunnit, with stories inside of stories inside of stories.

dont usually do shouts but dang this movie was good. ignore the rude comments and bad reviews. this movie was one of the best murder mystery movies i've seen in a while. it had a fabulous twist at the end WHICH NO ONE WILL SEE COMING AS IN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GUESS WHO IT IS pure genius movie

Teeming with whimsy, See How They Run is a light, bubbly meta-whodunnit which is sleek and stylish in its presentation with a killer cast to boot. It can't quite carry the energy of the first half through to the end, but it still makes for a light and fluffy comedy-drama with a lovely cast and a very enjoyable lilt. Started this on a whim and it just rolled so effortlessly from the opening monologue to the reveal laden finale. Lovely easy viewing.

Ruth Wilson steals the show, the first few scenes. And Saoirse Ronan is absolutely beautiful and lovely.

The movie feels a bit like a (theater) play in a way. Just not very funny. Unfortunately. And not as smart as some other movies it seems to try to steal or borrow from.

The result is somehow less than the sum of all the parts. The cast is top tier, and the premise of an Agatha Christie whodunit with a meta twist seems promising, but the result is just fine. It's not a bad movie, but also not something I'd want to watch again.

I really enjoyed it. A fun take on a Agatha Christie style whodunit. Sam Rock well is excellent as ever. And the interaction between him and Saoirse Ronan was a lot of fun.

This movie had all the right ingredients to be a great murder mystery, and yet, I don't know why but it was seriously missing something.

I think the premise of the movie is actually really clever: there is an Agatha Christie movie inside of an Agatha Christie movie. The opening minutes of the movie are actually quite good. The problem with this movie is everything after the beginning of the movie. It very much feels like the director thought that he could just roll the balls onto the proverbial court and he would have a basketball game. The movie was filled with all of the normal trappings of a murder-mystery but they just didn't add up. The parts were definitely better than the sum. I never felt any real intrigue, nor did I feel the movie building to a climax. it tried to be quirky and that felt wrong also. It ended up feeling like a cheap imitation of an Agatha Christie play.

A competent whodunit with a slight twist that will leave you pleasantly surprised.

Cute fun meta parody of a whodunnit

A good watch; a bit less good than a trademark Wes Anderson movie, even though it bears WA marks (just one look at the casting and the style and it's uncanny in many ways). Always liked this style and Saoirse Ronan is marvelous here!

loading replies

This movie is decent, it also helped me come to the realization that I fucking hate cutesy, period whodunits. I suppose all the meta stuff will really play to the Christie stans out there

loading replies

There are plenty of great British actors, or at least ones that are better at the accents. It's a cute movie, but I wouldn't say don't miss it. It's a Saturday night when you've got nothing better to watch or see or just wanting something campy-ish.

loading replies

Had it's moment with some off-the-cuff one liners that made us laugh, but it shouldn't be considered an out and out comedy. It's a play within a play within a movie.
Great time waster.

Simple, fun, and entertaining. Nothing to special but I liked the original ending and the tie-in from the beginning of the movie. One of the better whodunits of recent times.

loading replies

Sadly boring and very unfunny.

loading replies

I didn’t see them run, but I did witness a family pleaser that you could watch with your folks for some gentle humour.

loading replies

It's all very safe and predictable. A poor man's Knives Out but still enjoyable nonetheless.

:heart:x7
It's Agatha Christie - hard to do wrong with that. Ronan and Rockwell are really good together. It is delightfully charming.

How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!

There are some funny moments in this tribute to the durability of the play "The Mousetrap" in the West End (since 1952 on stage!). At times it is reminiscent of "Love gets the room" (2021) in the use of theatrical space, and of course "Knives out" (2020) in the claim to the spirit of Agatha Christie, but as it develops it shows the weaknesses of its proposal and it ends up being as bland as it is inconsistent.

"See How They Run" is a nice little whodunit with plenty of meta aspects and quite a few inspirations from the works of Wes Anderson. It's not just because of the cast, which is peppered with some of the usual Anderson players. The tone is very quirky, and the overall presentation is quite colorful.

The story revolves around Sam Rockwell as an experienced inspector and Saoirse Ronan as an overly motivated constable. The suspect pool is extensive. The majority of them have a plausible motive for the murder, there are a few clever twists and turns, and the resolution is also quite good.

Throughout the film, there is a lot of humor, and it works most of the time. I wouldn't say the film reinvents the wheel, but it's short and sweet. There is therefore no time to be bored.

A white-label Knives Out directed by a white-label Wes Anderson

loading replies

It's story is interesting enough to keep you seated there. It's clearly trying to be meta and knowingly silly, but it never quite hits its marks in attempting this. There's one specific point where something is said and I say "Oh that's just utterly stupid". Then later in the movie they make a callback to it and my only thought was "point proven, utterly stupid" when they were clearly going for "WOW! HAHA! THAT WAS AWESOME!".

Neither of the two stars get the quirkiness of their characters quite right. The support actors and actresses do better jobs, for the half of it.

loading replies

It takes a lot of inspiration from Cohen's Fargo. But it is too confused.

I was so hyped for this movie. It kinda gave me Knives Out made by Wes Anderson vibes. Sadly enough it just wasn't that great a movie. The potential was definitely there with great actors and visually speaking the movie was great. The plot was just lacking. Three couples left the cinemas throughout the movies which I've honestly never seen happen before. It was just to slow a movie.
