I remember seeing this when it first came out, it was unique, it was groundbreaking, it was well directed and well acted. Today it seems almost predictable, this does not make it a bad movie, just makes you realize how many other movies copied something from this one.
Pretty good and suspenseful movie, definately worth a watch.
Seven
A film that changed the world of thrillers. All thrillers nowadays are inspired by John Doe, the serial killer featured in the movie.
It is also a movie that needed to be seen at the time of its release, because now it seems to be the copy of the copy. In fact, if the first vision is made now, it is very predictable to understand who and what would have been in that box, but at the time it would have been almost unthinkable, and that is why Seven is an essential film, a cult for the genre.
Morgan Freeman superb, Brad Pitt incredible especially in the final scene, Seven is a film about evil through the 7 deadly sins, and not a police film. Adrenaline-pumping chase scenes, tense nerves in the final scene of the film and the desire to find out every minute that passes who the real killer is.
Would I recommend this to the average audience? No. As I said before, I recognize that it can be boring and rundown given the multiple films that have been inspired by this milestone. I'm guilty of this myself since I saw it in 2022. But I recognize its importance and it certainly would have been a must-see movie in the 90s and early 00s.
7/10
A good thriller, but the ending was so predictable. I was expecting a shocking twist.
A masterpiece. Simple as that.
PS: I don't think this movie was predictable at all, then again, I'm no fortune teller.
Though I knew what was going to to be in the box (as many have stated they did too), I was still on the edge of my seat the entire time. Insane movie.
Was it just me or was this film extremely predictable, as soon as the guy brought it out I knew what was in the box.
This movie is so overrated.
Lost count of how many times I watched it. I still don't care even a inch for David (Brad Pitt). Good movie.
i felt the movie was a bit short, the chase for the killer went a bit too fast and easy
i think with some extra time, this could have been much better.
Towards the end it was a bit predictable, but overall it was a very interesting movie.
I don't know what everyone was thinking but this movie was just bad.
This film is ageing tremendously :boom::raised_hands_tone5:
plot twist: the real killer was the police chief and this was all just a ploy to force Morgan Freeman not to retire
Gripping and dark till the very end. Awesome movie
Awesome, entertaining and perfectly dark. It’s clear that this is the blueprint for all the crime thrillers made in the 00s.
“What’s in the box!”
Se7en is one of the best thrillers ever. It’s very disturbing and at hard to watch. It’s dark and psychological. The plot is great it’s the classic detective movie with the greatest serial killer villain of all time. The acting is fantastic Morgan Freeman gives a great performance and Brad Pitt gives a great range of emotion. This movie took two amazing actors and made them even better. It’s brilliantly directed by David Fincher. The cinematography is great it sets the mood and the lighting is dark it feels like every things is ether black or orange. The ending is so thrilling it’s one of the best ever. Overall it’s a brilliant crime thriller and a classic.
( 9 out of 10)
Everyone can see the world as it is. Fincher, however, shows it more "brightly".
Equally in awe as the first time and many more times I've seen it.
It's funny that at the time I remember the gore and how disturbingly gruesome it was considered to be yet watching now amidst all these movies that shows the way blood gushes out of a severed artery this movie didn't need such close up details to have the same impact.
I know many claim the Mandela effect on this movie but I distinctly remember that Gwenith Paltro's severed head was never shown but implied.
I don't know why ppl insist otherwise but it's whatever. This movie will forever be a classic masterpiece.
The soundtrack is sooo dated and bad I almost turned the movie off ppphhhffrrrrttt
Se7en was pretty good. It had pacing issues at times and one of the subplots seemed pointless until it later became too obvious why it was included at all. The character dynamics between the two detectives was well done, even if it wasn't very original, and the cinematography was really good at highlighting this evolving relationship. The music occasionally seemed too grand for what was being shown on-screen, it didn't compliment it well in my opinion. Toby Ziegler looks completely different without his beard, I only recognised him because of his voice. Pretty meh ending.
it's a very good movie
It's may be the best movie Brad has come up with
BUT the ending was kind of predictable and the directing of the last scene wasn't that good
It was supposed to be very intense scene Brad Bit didn't make a good effort to convince us he was suppose to make us cry , and the way he found out about his wife wasn't creative
The point is that they could have made a masterpiece out of this
Very good movie, although a little predictable.
Superb horror thriller with a great cast!
I found this on a list of great endings, and this list was absolutely right. There were some points where I felt as if the movie was slow but that immediately changed the next second. The plot twists throw you into another world of suspense and the ending left me feeling many, many emotions.
I had so much high expectations for this film. But it's a good movie at best. I would have rate it 6 if it wasn't a well directed and acted movie. But the story was predictable and ending was disappointing.
Killer didn't kill right people for respective deadly sins.
This feels so dirty and gross. All the murders are disgusting. Very well directed by Fincher. Great performances by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman.
What's in the box!!!???? - possibly one of the most memorable quotes in movie history. Why? Because I've known about it forever, regardless of the fact that I've never seen Se7en before. This is a movie that people talk about a lot, so yes, I've been spoiled before. However, I didn't really know the details behind it, and I went with the idea that maybe I was remembering wrong and the specifics were foggy. Plus, I wanted to see what makes people love the rest of the movie because I honestly didn't love the movie. It was okay. Let's get into it.
So Se7en stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as two homicide detectives investigating one of the most notorious serial killer cases of all time. This killer is taking the Seven Deadly Sins found in Dante's Inferno and is using those as inspiration for his next kill.
This film is so incredibly simple, I'm having a hard time why people find it so awe-inspiring. At its core, it's really just a dark buddy-cop thriller as these detectives are tracking down a unique serial killer. I mean, you have movies like Zodiac or The Alphabet Killer, or whatever - all of which feature a killer that has a unique style and method of committing murder - and most of these movies are also dark. The one thing that this movie adds is the overall sensation of being a noir-styled film - which sometimes people love. I, on the other hand, hate noirs. I see a noir like a boring ingredient added to an otherwise exciting story. Basically, the story is there. An absolutely intriguing story with interesting characters - drowning in boredom soup.
Furthermore, I feel as if a lot of people place the ending of this film as one of the main reasons why it's "perfect". Well, I'll agree with this much - the climax of the movie is a slow build up that once reached, is riveting. The rest, primarily the first hour and fifteen minutes or so, is painstakingly tedious. While I understood what they were trying to accomplish and respect the route they took, I was about to pull my hair out. I even paused the movie to watch something else before I finished it...that's how much I was invested in this movie. The ending, by the way - if you're paying attention to the actual deadly sins, is like a puzzle. If you're paying close enough attention, nothing about the film will shock you at all.
The one good thing that I'll say about it is somewhere between the audio and video on a technical level - was unnerving to the core, which is something the film really benefits from, more than twenty years later. I'll also point out that my dissatisfaction with noir films is a flaw of my own, which is why I won't let that affect my score too much. Many people love noirs, and if you're one of them, then Se7en might be the right choice for you. Check it out!
Simply magnificent film! The plot and its unveiling absolutely wonderful. Great acting.....just watch it you won't regret it.
“The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.” - Ernest Hemingway
You know, I always thought it was a strange way to end a movie with a quote like that after the most disturbing scene just happened, where you as an audience member will lost all faith in humanity. On a second thought, perhaps it opens up the possibility to find the light in the darkest of times.
However, I found out Ernest Hemingway killed himself. Read that quote again with that context in mind. Unnerving.
how do you pronounce se7en is it like seven but there's an echo
One of the most incredible movies I've had the honor of watching! Seven is the best film of this great director David Fincher, a Modern Classic and now contemporary, since it is 1995. Terrific direction and wonderful performances by Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, but especially Kevin Spacey, who had not won by Suspects , I would have won for this, it was a wonderful year for a world cinema legend. Incredible script and its development is to impress, Dark and Tenebrante photography, incredible soundtrack or a work of art. Not to give to understand how this film only competed to 1 oscar (Assembly) Absurd ..... would have been indicated in the minimum in 12 categories easy easy, being by Film, direction, actor (Freeman and Pitt) Supporting Actor (Spacey), actress, supporting actress (Patrow), script, photography, art direction, montage, sound mix, sound effects, these 5 easy would gain, but ..... Seven - The 7 capital crimes is one of the best films of all time and a milestone of police cinema.
Great movie, great cast. Worth watching!
Seven is well crafted and ingeniously clever, making it one of the greatest films of the 90's.
I did not like the beginning. But once it starts, whoah it is crazy !
Usually I'm not a fan of detective / cops movies. Do not go away if you are like that, the movie truly is a pleasant surprise.
The ending broke me .
I had an idea of where this story was going, and I was close but it was still a shocking and intense ending. Good murder mystery movie.
what a twist.. its a rewatch for me but god this movie is so good ... brad Pitt killed it with that last scene ...
30 years old and still as good as it was on release.
And yet the amount of low iq whining in the comments here is astonishing. Yet another lesson on why it’s often not a good idea to expose yourself to the vocal minority and their asinine ramblings. “Wahhh I’m a self-professed genius and this movie was totally predictable, mediocre at best” stfu and go watch some more marvel slop, you absolute clowns.
Se7en is brutal, psychological, and dark. It was ahead of its time then, and remains the apex of crime dramas today.
This isn't some run-of-the-mill crime drama. No siree. Director David Fincher weaves an intricate, atmospheric tapestry that makes your skin crawl and your mind race. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman? Dynamic as all get out. The raw tension between them is the heart and soul of this grim tale. And the ending! My God, the ending. It's not just a gut-punch, it's a full-on body blow. So, if you're the kind who enjoys their cinematic experience with a side of existential dread, "Se7en" is right up your alley. It's gruesome, it's gritty, it's shocking, and it's a bloody masterpiece that stays with you long after the credits roll. Grab your popcorn and steel your nerves, 'cause this is one hell of a rollercoaster ride.
"Se7en" is a 1995 crime and horror film directed by David Fincher. The story of the film is about a police detective named William Somerset (played by Morgan Freeman) and his new partner, David Mills (played by Brad Pitt), who are in pursuit of a serial killer named John Doe (played by Kevin Spacey). ) are.
In this film, John commits two murders, each of which refers to one of the seven deadly sins. These seven sins include anger, greed, fornication, bigotry, humility, greed and selfishness. In each murder, John Doe kills his victim in a way that is associated with sin.
As time passes, William Somerset and David Mills go after John Doe, and in the meantime, a friendship and personal relationship develops between them. But in the end, with new evidence, they arrive at John Doe's murder, and finally, David Mills is killed because of John Doe's instigation, and William Somerset is left alone.
The movie "Se7en" is among the movies that are very successful in terms of story telling, acting, special effects and music. Also, the story of the film shows that each of these seven major sins can not only lead to killing others, but also lead to suicide and continued mental pressure.
Se7en is a classic of psychological horror and suspense, and a defining film of the crime-thriller genre. The film's direction and cinematography create a dark atmosphere that perfectly complements the story. The performances by the lead actors are outstanding, with Freeman and Pitt playing off each other brilliantly. What sets this film apart is its ability to shock and disturb the viewer. Overall, Se7en is a film that has stood the test of time, with its powerful storytelling, exceptional performances, and unforgettable ending making it a classic.
I've never seen a movie where it rained so much.
The funcking best movie of my life
What an amazing crime movie. It’s grim with continuous tension. Is it the most satisfying movie out there? No, but an happy ending wouldn’t have fitted this anyway. I spent two hours wondering what was going to happen next and that’s exactly what I want from something like this.
Solid not great. Showing its age now. The final 30 minutes is dragged out way too much.
7/10
Expected more?
Having only just seen this film, I have to say I was expecting more.
While I enjoyed the premise and the build-up I felt slightly let down by the ending.
I imagine watching on release this would have hit harder and perhaps due to the age of the film and having seen similar films since this came out, it simply felt predictable.
With that said I still enjoyed the experience and the story being told I just wish I saw it sooner.
7/10 - Good film, one that I'll happily watch again
Not a bad movie but overrated AF.
If the ending is spoiled, the whole movie falls apart. I enjoyed every second of going from A to B, but I already knew the structure of B. Which, thanks to the previous 1h30m made it easily guessable what B was specifically.
Like I said, it was still enjoyable taking that journey. But I think it would've been way more enjoyable if the destination wasn't known.
Also If Kevin Spacey wasn't a rapist.
Every crime scene is grotesque and icky. Creating such an atmosphere as if the audience is solving the puzzle as the characters go along. And even if you haven't watched the movie, I think everyone knows about the finale in some shape or form.
The ending of this movie was crazy.
Must see before you die!
Great built but ending wasn't what I expected, not in a good way. 6/10
This kinda a masterpiece
that smile of Kevin spacey at the end explain how much this movie is great for real
David Fincher's direction always shines with thrillers, and "Se7en" is one of the most outstanding examples. Aesthetically one of the best thrillers of its generation, the cinematography is so slick and tasteful that it could pass as a recent film. I also liked the dark and gritty atmosphere of rainy Los Angeles, with old and dirty apartments and oppressively dim lights. In particular, the crime scenes are elegantly designed to reflect the poetic overtones of the killer's project. The screenplay is generally solid with the dialogues, the literary references and the way the relationship between the two leads develops, but the final twist and ending felt way too underwhelming if we consider the engaging premise. Brad Pitt's acting sometimes kills the mood, but Freeman and especially Spacey are at their best here and help to balance him off decently.
Se7en, that's a good rating for a film.
Also, why didn't Somerset try to get between Mills and John Doe, or try to wrestle Mills' gun away? And why is no one else asking this question? I think it's a conspiracy.
Slow start but second half was great.
Final chapter is nail biting.

“You gotta be a... a hero. You want to be a champion. Well, let me tell you. People don't want a champion. They want to eat cheeseburgers, play the lotto and watch television.”
MORGAN FREEMAN - Somerset
Definitely doesn't feel 20 years old ..although a few of the performances are a bit wooden
Detective Sommerset observes the overcrowded, dark, sinful city and he seems to have an deep inner depression. Short: The city life sucks.
Walker (Screenwriter) and Fincher (Director) are pretty accurate with their observation of life in big cities. And they use this as motivation for their characters. I think this is brilliant.
Because they all share this inner depresion about the city life.
This is why i think this movie is without a doubt a masterpiece.
Watching this again i was about to forget how great this movie was..Really good thriller 8.5/10
I just cannot rate this!
I was living a good life &
now I'm woefully exasperated.
I wish more than anything that
I could unsee this stupid mindfuck.
I'll just watch Disney movies only from now!
“What’s in the box?” David Fincher’s crime thriller Se7en is a brilliant and atmospheric film that’s especially well-crafted. Two police detectives come across the most challenging case of their careers when they investigate a serial killer who’s selecting victims based on the seven deadly sins. The story is smartly written, with an ending that’s shocking and unforgettable. The casting is particularly good, and includes Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey; who all deliver excellent performances. Fincher’s directing is also exceptional, and is able to bring a lot of intensity and intrigue to the film. Additionally, the cinematography and score are remarkably well-done, and help to enhance the mood and tone of the material. A true masterpiece, Se7en is a powerful noir film that’s gritty and daring.
I think it gets better every time I watch it.
This movie is disturbing from start to finish. It begins with the opening sequence and ends with the credits rolling in reverse, which was even more unsettling than the opening!
I was also puzzled by the fact, that this movie was released in 1995, because it doesn't feel that "old". I'm not sure why, but more often than not, when I watch an older movie, I have a hard time not noticing - be it because of the way it looks, the way the characters talk or the old-fashioned technology. During Se7en (I even find the stylization of the title irritating!) I never once thought about the missing cellphones, computer screens or search engines.
One reason why I never watched this movie before is Brad Pitt. I always think, I don't really like seeing him on screen, but everytime I do, I'm surprised, that I do actually like watching him.. it's weird, I know.
Anyway, this movie has everything I love about thrillers and maybe (just maybe) I should get over some of my prejudices towards certain actors in order to discover more great movies I have never watched before.
SE7EN
Nailed it, bailed it or failed it?
Let’s play!
Writing: NAILED IT!
The story is all-around great, from the set-up to heart-pounding finale. There is something extremely attractive with a film about a retiring detective having to solve a string of brutal murders connected to the seven deadly sins together with a young and overly eager colleague.
The first half of the film is a slow crime drama, putting focus on the characters and really making them feel like real people. The second half is an intense crime thriller, putting in a new gear and turning completely insane.
The writing is incredibly clever, stays one step ahead of the audience all the time and makes sure the detectives’ personal lives are interwoven with the investigation all the time. Small twists are thrown at the audience all the time, keeping is on the edge of the seat.
The dialogue is clever and sophisticated, in particular when it comes to the many monologues given by “John Doe”.
Characters and Acting: NAILED IT!
Unbelievable chemistry between the two leads; the seasoned and broody Freeman & the young and talkative Pitt. I am particularly impressed by Freeman’s grumpy but clever take on his role and he overshadows everyone else.
The two detectives aren’t completely good themselves either, as they use forbidden measures and go to great lengths to catch the murderer. Moreover, as the investigation grows in intensity the uneasy relationship between Freeman & Pitt grow stronger and they realize they need each other in order to solve the case.
Gwyneth Paltrow makes a fine, albeit small and mostly superfluous, appearance.
When “John Doe” finally enters in the final act, he completely steals the show in a manic, terrifying and memorable film villain straight from your worst nightmares. It’s the most brilliant performance in the man’s career.
Direction: NAILED IT!
David Fincher keeps everything tightly knit together and utilizes editing, cinematography and music to create intense, creepy and memorable sequences throughout the film. As the villain is introduced towards the end, Fincher becomes more creative and playful in his directing, giving the final act an insane quality of its own.
Visuals: NAILED IT!
The cinematography is great from start to finish, but it is in the final act where it becomes truly interesting, even inventive.
The bizarre grossness of the film, while most of the times only implied, is memorable.
Sound: NAILED IT!
Beautiful, creepy and harrowing film score by the great composer Howard Shore. It strengthens the gritty look and feel of the film.
Pacing: BAILED IT!
The start is somewhat slow and things don’t really get going until well into the movie. Most of the actual investigation is forgotten in the first half of the film, in favour of stronger focus in the characters.
This is largely made up for by the brilliant, fast-paced second half and in particular, the tightly knit suspense of the final 40 minutes.
Themes: NAILED IT!
Brutal murders, a psychopathic killer with a story to tell, two cops in different stages of their lives having to rely on each other in order to survive. It’s all so simple, yet so effective.
Atmosphere: NAILED IT!
It’s all dark, depressing and gritty, yet realistic and slowly growing. The growing intensity is almost touchable and the overall noir feel of the film makes it very memorable. The realism and the brutalism fits the story very well.
Rewatchability: NAILED IT!
The attention to detail is incredible. This movie is highly rewatchable for its incredible characters, intelligent dialogue and memorable final moments.
Expectations: NAILED IT!
I expected a lot from this classic crime thriller, and the film turned out to exceed those expectations.
Bottom line: NAILED IT!
Se7en is a near perfect crime thriller and an expertly written, gritty and brutal film with memorable performances.
classic fincher...noir, horror mystery, suspense
Superb fantastic. But Kevin Spacey is a Bitch
I just finished this amazing movie wow blown away by the Plot and writing... Kevin Spacey was Great in his role as was Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt I stick to my rating 9.5/10
Well directed, well written and awesome jobs in casting and acting! 8/10
I can't believe I didn't watch this masterpiece sooner, well... at leat I'm glad I did now. Easily, one of my favorite movies, released in 1995 but it's still so 'refreshing' now in 2018... Excellent!
Can some Movie-Buff make a list of movies with Twist Climax?
Please!
Great movie though.
i think majority of people shock after watch the last scene.otherwise, you know who the last two victims early if you pay attention.
Image 4.5 / 5 and sound 4.75 / 5. Just as dark, depressing, dark, rainy and good that when I saw 10 years ago
This movie was great the 10th time I watched it.
What is in the box!! D= Brilliant.

Having heard great things and seeing the rating on here, I had high expectations. It was mediocre at best and extremely predictable.
