One of the best war movies ever. The first 30 minutes are so intense. Spielberg is a master director and that may be his best scene ever. There are so many actors in this that I forgot about, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti, and Nathan Fillion.
Of course this movie is a classic and should have won the best picture Oscar. One thing I dislike about this movie is when it jumps into the future. I would have preferred it if it ended in its own period.
Saving Private Ryan is a phenomenal movie. I’ve been wanting to watch this film for a long time and this was one of the first films I ever put on my watchlist. I always wanted to watch this film because it seemed like the type of film I would love but for some reason I kept pushing it back. I decided it was finally time that I watched this iconic film and because of all the fantastic things I had read/heard about it I had extremely high expectations. All of my high expectations where exceeded, every single aspect of this film completely blew me away. Besides a few minor problems it’s honestly hard to think of any major or notable flaws. The plot is great it’s an immensely realistic and captivating story. The second the film starts it grabs your complete attention and doesn’t let go until the credits role. Right off the bat the story begins with a brutally intense and masterfully crafted 30 minutes depicting the events of D-Day. Those 30 are undoubtedly some of the most well made and truly heartbreaking moments in film history.
The story is such a human story that brilliantly balances an array of moral themes. It’s the type of story where you can’t help but ponder what’s to happen next because of how unpredictably realistic the story can get. The pacing is great since it’s absolutely an engaging story there isn’t a single slow or boring moment. The acting is phenomenal Tom Hanks a phenomenal performance. Hanks doesn’t even have to try and give an outstanding performance he’s just that amazing of an actor.
Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg, Vin Diesel, and Giovanni Ribisi give fantastic supporting performances as well. This film seriously has one of the most versatile and talented casts of all time. The direction is phenomenal from Steven Spielberg, every single one of his directorial choices felt masterfully thought out and genius. Spielberg truly knows how to tell an incredibly important story. The script is fantastic it’s an authentic and very well written script stacked with memorable pieces of dialogue between the platoon. The cinematography is phenomenal this film is full of beautiful and impressive shots that immerse the audience into WW2. The visual effects and editing are phenomenal as well. The score is phenomenal from John Williams he really knows how to make a score that strikes up personal emotion. I’ve said this many times before and I’ll say it again Williams is the greatest film composer of all time. It’s hard to believe that Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Score won over this. The ending is a heartfelt ending that brings you close to tears. Overall Saving Private Ryan is an intensely realistic and overwhelmingly stunning war film that’s absolutely a true masterpiece.

THE GOOD:
That opening scene is a breathtaking experience. Spielberg boldly plays around with sound, editing and cinematography to create a truly tense and intimate experience and his choice to depict warfare in all its gruesome horror makes the entire sequence all the more impressive.
You rarely see movies that depict what I imagine is the chaos, horror, death and noises on warfare, as well as this movie, does.
I love how the camera constantly stays close to the characters and the action, effectively allowing the viewer to feel like a member of the squad.
I never thought Tom Hanks would work in a film like this one, but he embraces his part just as naturally as he does with any other part. Matt Damon appears later on and is extremely likeable in an infectiously wonderful performance.
The constantly shaking camera, dirt- and water-soaked lenses and the bleak colour palette aren’t typical Spielbergian filmmaking techniques but they might very well be the minor details that help Saving Private Ryan stand out.
The script balances nearly perfectly between the tense and heart-pumping, the sad and heartbreaking, the funny and lighthearted and the slowly contemplative.
Thanks to the grounded plot, there’s more space for character moments and tension between the soldiers. None of the characters is instantly memorable, but they all come across as realistic.
Saving Private Ryan works as a great contrast to the grim and depressing Schindler’s List. This one feature more humour and doesn’t try to be quite as horrifying, while still aiming to depict warfare from a realistic point of view. Above all, it’s a tale about the small and positive things that allowed our brave soldiers to survive and win the war together.
The last act and battle return to the intense, intricate and shocking from the opening, thus bringing the feature to a satisfying close.
THE BAD:
There are times where I wish the plot had moved forward faster. We enter a new segment of the film swiftly, get to the point and then linger there for a few additional scenes before moving on, and it turns frustrating pretty quickly.
THE UGLY:
Why hasn’t Nathan Fillion received the nickname “Wrong-Ryan” by now?
THE VERDICT:
Steven Spielberg takes the viewer to the battlefields of WWII in a breathtakingly beautiful, harrowing and convincing experience that came to change the way we understand war epics.
92% = :white_check_mark::white_check_mark: = BETTER
image and sound 4,5 / 5. How good is this movie, how good is the action scenes, especially the one on the beach and the bridge. With little known actors then like Vinn Diesel and Nathan Fillon
The sequel, Saving Ryan's Privates..also a good watch
One of the best anti-war movies I know, even though it tends a bit towards cheesiness (e.g. when Captain Miller dies and tells Private Ryan to earn his life).
Superb!
Commerorative 2 disc edition 2004
Even with all the brutality, Spielberg still manages to slip in his norman Rockwell charm on certain scenes, especially the ending. The first battle scene is iconic. The final battle scene was wonderful. The flow of the film is fairly balanced, although there were several moments that could have been trimmed down. Overall, the blueprint for modern war films
war is bad. tom hanks is good.
It's worth the hype. Awesome movie with an amazing story.
"Saving Private Ryan" is a 1998 war film directed by Steven Spielberg (one of my favorite directors) that really leaves an impression on the audience. From the tense opening sequence depicting the chaos of the D-Day invasion to the emotional journey of a group of soldiers searching for one man, the movie draws you in with its realistic and intense depiction of war. The outstanding performances, led by Tom Hanks, capture the camaraderie and sacrifice of the soldiers in a deeply moving way. Spielberg's direction effortlessly balances action and introspection, making us reflect on the human cost of war. "Saving Private Ryan" is a powerful and thought-provoking film that pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who fought during the Second World War. Highly recommended.
10/10
Amazing movie. The opening scene was incredible, I sat at my couch in silence, not moving, not speaking, my heart stopt, best opening scene in cinematic history for me. Words cannot describe how good this movie is. I write this 20 minutes after watching the movie, I don’t know what to say.. I am speechless…. I just cannot describe how I feel now. A true masterpiece! The acting was also really good, some really famous actors are in this movie to (back then maybe a little less famous)
Saving Private Ryan is an excellent historical movie that transports viewers to the heart of World War II. Tom Hanks delivers a great performance as the lead character, supported by a stellar cast that brings to life the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in that war. The special effects are also top-notch, bringing a sense of realism and authenticity to the battle scenes. It's a powerful and moving film that honors the heroism of those who fought for freedom and democracy during a time of great turmoil in human history.
Watched this film as a kid so much because my dad never had it off, i hated it but never understood it, now at 28 years old finally watching it i was blown away.. one of the best movies period, the way its filmed, the casting, that opening beach seen blew my mind. A must watch :clap_tone2:
This was an absolute brilliant movie. Great cast, realistic action and an amazing story. I’m not big on war movies, but I doubt I’ll ever see a better one that this. Absolutely loved it.
this movie has a special place in my heart... I can never forget some scenes...all the emotions that these soldiers go through on the battlefield is truly heart wrenching...all the sacrifices come down to one unavoidable queston..did we earn this freedom..?.. this life.. can we lead our lives as a good man?...
the film gets so much better as it progresses... horrors of the war are so amazingly portrayed . Such a diverse starcast too! and As usual Tom Hanks NEVER disappoints.
I love the level of details in this movie
“This time the mission is a man.” Saving Private Ryan is a powerful and evocative World War II epic from director Steven Spielberg. Dealing with the value of life and the personal toll that war takes on one’s humanity, the film addresses some compelling issues. The story follows an American Army unit that’s sent to find a paratrooper whose brothers were killed in the Normandy invasion. Starring Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, and Matt Damon, the film features an all-star cast that gives some incredible performances. And the production values, from the costumes, to the make-up effects, to the cinematography, are extraordinarily well-done. Additionally, John Williams crafts a magnificent score that accentuates the visceral imagery. Delivering a raw and uncompromising depiction of warfare, Saving Private Ryan is a cinematic masterpiece.
This film only gets better, definitely a magnificent film and camera work is outstanding. A lot of actors in this have done well for themselves. Spielberg has made a lot of great movies, definitely another one that deserves my top list.
A search for one soldier among the chaos of war, gives the opportunity for superb acting performances both big & small.
Gripping, horrific first-person experiences in the thick of World War II, as you're already, no doubt, keenly aware. It's held up exceptionally well over time, most likely due to the great lengths taken by Spielberg and company to stamp it down in a specific era and remain steadfastly historical.
The Normandy beach landing that opens the action is still as powerful and haunting as ever, an effects showcase like none other that puts us right down in the middle of hell itself. I couldn't help but pontificate about the futility of ground warfare here, faced with row after row of doe-eyed teenagers, unceremoniously mowed down before taking so much as a single step on enemy territory. Which is part of its message, no doubt - though that's somewhat countered by the tales of bravado, camaraderie and character that sprawl out over the next two hours.
A richly rounded war story, it enjoys a mess of acting performances even stronger than the work of the effects team. Tom Hanks is at the top of the mountain as Captain Miller, a demanding role that he owns from moment one. Supporting faces pop out of the woodwork at every corner; most of us remember Vin Diesel and Adam Goldberg in early roles, but quick shots from Paul Giamatti, Ted Danson, Bryan Cranston and more left my jaw agape. How did I miss spotting these guys the last time?
A true war epic, profound and moving, with plenty of action but just as much character-building and adventure also in the mix. One of Spielberg's - and Hanks's - best.
Its the Best War Movie i have ever seen
Wars are always cruel, but sometimes cause wonderful stories making us believe our good sides by chance.
extremely refined, well-produced piece of propaganda
Why does Stephen Spielberg seem so pandering and inattentive as a director-- Until the moment he begins filming a World War II film? The Ulysses of Spielberg's career is, unequivocally, either Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. And with production credits on such landmarks of the genre as Flags of Our Fathers (and its sister project, Letters from Iwo Jima), Empire of the Sun, and Band of Brothers, he has put together a weightier artistic portfolio in WW2 movies than even in his other wheelhouse of box-office-conscious action thrillers.
Together with my dear on the couch, watching this great movie. Just love my girlfriend
Very touching movie.

This should cool off the Rambo wannabes. The opening beach assault sequences were the most violent, realistic, and upsetting filming I've ever seen; looked as though the thing was actual combat footage. The shushing noises of rounds cutting through the air was the most chilling part of all. Perfect portrayal of the insane stupidity of war and the anguish of all who enter this most foolish of enterprises. A must see.
