Not as good as the previous ones with a lot of goofy moments mainly because of the Ewoks. They should not have spent so much time on them and their exploits. The most interesting thing about this movie is the relationship between Luke and Vader who settled their problems through an emotional fight which is the best of this trilogy.
This is the Special Edition that messed up a great movie. From the overly goofy musical number in the Jaba Palace scene that makes the scene less serious now. To the dull musical score in the end that replaced the original score. Lucas just shouldn't have messed with something that didn't messing with.
I mean I never had a problem with Ewoks. Especially when Jar-Jar is far worse. The film was a childhood favorite of mine, the way it was. Was the one I watched over and over again until I realized how great Empire was when I was older.
What was in my opinion a solid film, Lucas made weaker once he messed with it in 1997. Now he forces this version on us as the only version available on DVD or digital.
Most people adore the Ewoks but for me the film loses a star because of them
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Return of the Jedi’:
Easily the weakest of the originals. It suffers from pandering to merchandise and the cutesy and very annoying Ewoks, but it's still a fun and entertaining closing to the original trilogy.
This movies only saving grace is the scene between Darth Vader, Luke, and the Emperor. Otherwise this was a complete mess. You can tell George Lucas lost his damn mind when it came to ROTJ. If you look back the Prequels really aren't that surprising considering what he did with this one.
The last episode of Lucas' original "Star Wars" saga. Nothing special, but a decent movie anyway (and as part of the Star Wars saga a must-see none-the-less).
the saddest moment in cinematic history is when those two ewoks get caught in an explosion and one of them gets up and shakes the other but it doesn’t move i literally am still in fucking tears george lucas you utter piece of shit
"Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You've failed, your highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me."
I really like the ending with the scene between Anakin and Luke. Luke taking his father's mask of is such a great scene! That whole bit between the Emperor, Darth Vader and Luke is brilliant.
We also get the Jabba the Hutt opening, the battle in the Ewok's forest, we still have that epic soundtrack, Han giving his Millennium Falcon away, the talk between Luke and Yoda, Obi-Wan! C3P0 still brings the laughs and we get an awesome party at the end.
Return of the Jedi is still my least favorite of the original trilogy but still a very good entry in the franchise. A lovely conclusion to the first Star Wars trilogy we got!
Return of the Jedi, the final installment of the original Star Wars trilogy, had a lot to live up to after the success of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. While it is an exciting adventure movie that features a rescue mission, espionage, and an epic battle, it falls short of reaching the same level as its predecessors. The cast, including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher, all return and deliver solid performances, with Hamill's portrayal of Luke Skywalker being particularly noteworthy. However, some of the scenes are drawn out and the inclusion of the Ewoks as the main battle force diminishes the Empire's power and feels like a merchandising ploy. The visual effects, including the speeder chase on Endor and the space battles, are impressive, and the forest moon of Endor is a unique and visually striking location. However, the use of a second Death Star is unoriginal and the added scene of Boba Fett in the Dune Seas is not well received. In addition, the inclusion of the prequel trilogy creates inconsistencies with certain aspects of the story, such as Leia's memories of her birth mother. Overall, Return of the Jedi is a fitting end to the classic trilogy that provides closure to the characters' arcs, but it has its flaws and doesn't quite reach the same level of its predecessors.
Definitely deserves a higher rating then 10/10, Anakin’s(and darth vader) story arc through every movie and book is incredible, I’ll always be a die hard Anakin/Vader fan.
P.s. in the very end when the force ghosts see Luke, they should replace the older obi wan (Alec) with Ewan

Arguably the weakest (comparably) of the original trilogy, yet 'Return of the Jedi' is still an excellent film!
Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher remain a thoroughly enjoyable trio. I did find parts of the plot a little similar to 1977's 'Star Wars', due to the Death Star stuff, but overall I unquestionably enjoyed the 135 minutes.
The score is great again, while the new bunch of characters are cool. There are some memorable moments in there, as we see the first spate of films come to a close very nicely. I'm very intrigued to see where things go with the prequels, hopefully they continue to hit high marks.
THE WACPINE OF 'RETURN OF THE JEDI'
WRITING: 8
ATMOSPHERE: 7
CHARACTERS: 8
PRODUCTION: 9
INTRIGUE: 7
NOVELTY: 7
ENJOYMENT: 7
The Good:
I love Luke's darker persona as he has to fight to stay on the light side. It shows how much he has developed throughout the trilogy, but also how he is similar to his father.
The climactic lightsaber duel is awesome, as is the operation to destroy the second Death Star.
The production design is impeccable, the costumes look amazing and the music and sound design are top-notch. I'm happy that the model work and basic visual effects have been conserved, even in the altered versions.
The Bad:
The added song performance in Jabba's palace is the most cringeworthy and unnecessary addition to the original trilogy. I wish the Disney+ version would have edited that part out.
The Jabba sequence, while at times exciting and well-made, just feels like a prolonged intro before the real film begins. The same goes for the endless Endor sequence before the Battle of Endor begins.
One of the main problems is the fact that this film doesn't divide the action into several smaller blocks of a story like the previous two films, and only really focuses on three very long acts (Jabba, Endor, final battle). That makes Return of the Jedi feel slower than the first two films.
The new characters don't stand out this time, and most of the old ones remain fairly bland. Luke, Leia, C-3PO and Vader are the only interesting characters.
While I understand that adding Hayden Christensen's force instead of the original one at the end is a way to tie the original trilogy closer to the prequel trilogy, it doesn't make any sense. Yoda and Obi-Wan look the way they did when they died, so Anakin should be older here.
The Ugly:
Is it just me, or we're the Ewoks created just to boost plush toy sales?
WACPINE RATING: 7.57 / 10 = 4 stars
This Star Wars is the best in the series.
The action, you will never see such an action again.
The story is changing a lot.
The visual effects are extremely well done.
I get more than a grade of 10, but I have no choice.
I've seen it in 6 different decades now and I'm still an emotional wreck after sitting thru it
As always on top off all and the force will always be strong in this one.
Magical
Good movie, but, today's cgi blows the old Star Wars movies away.
I cried more than one hour because of him! Maybe there is someone who never seen this before so I don´t wanna write here spoiler but he is the best character for me so I cried like little kid when it happened. I was all day so sad from that. I was like a zombie..
Besides the Ewoks this is a great movie. It doesn’t quite live up to the two previous but still better than all the prequels.
Great movie which I have loved since seeing it as a kid. It has a lot of funny moments due to C3PO and the Ewoks and the story ties the trilogy up quite nicely.
So You've Accepted The Truth
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi was a pretty disappointing conclusion to the trilogy. At least I finally finished the original trilogy after starting it five years ago though. It was decidedly not epic in scale and while I wasn't a huge fan of the previous two, this one seemed relatively worse. The acting was pretty mediocre and Harrison Ford in particular seemed terrible. The soundtrack was great though, as expected. A lot of it just seemed like an excuse to show off their practical and visual effects, which I'm sure looked amazing when they came out but sometimes don't hold up as well today. Also, howdoexplosionswork. This probably would have been more fun if I'd watched it with some friends and I would have been more forgiving of the boring plot.
I really, really like this movie.
Even though I'm not a big fan of the Ewoks, the conclusion of the original "Star Wars" trilogy is quite compelling. The beginning on Tatooine and the entire finale surrounding the second Death Star are particularly strong. The result is a generally fitting ending that could certainly have been left as it is and didn't necessarily have to be followed by further films. A little less Ewoks and I would have been completely satisfied, but as it is, "Return of the Jedi" is still pretty good.
For a storyline that was never originally intended, Luke saving Anakin, and vice versa, still hits me as hard as it did the first time I heard "No. I am your father."
It certainly wasn't a deeply-subliminal point of the movie, given Vader's obvious turn back to the Light, but Vader stopping Luke from killing Palpatine on Palpatine's suggestion, the same way Anakin did to Dooku, really recontextualizes that moment for me. I've rewatched these movies countless times in the last 40 years, but Palpatine pulling on the same strings he was just before Anakin's turn makes Vader's attempt to defend Palpatine seem more like his attempt to stop Luke from making the same mistake he did.
"You already have, Luke. You were right; you were right about me. Tell your sister, you were right." As critical of the prequels as I have been over the last 20 years, that line breaks my heart more than any in this franchise.
And, sure, I don't really like the "how casual should I look, George?" addition of Hayden Christensen's Force ghost at the end, but even with all the special edition changes that enraged the fandom, that ain't the worst.
The Original Trilogy finale is just as iconic as its predecessors. 10/10 :star:
Good and photonoveled ending, then, of the series.
Loved the ending, but I didn't enjoy the whole movie that much.
It is indeed not a "Trap!" Return of the Jedi returned to theaters this week to celebrate the 40th Anniversary, and just in time for Star Wars Day! (May the 4th)
Seeing Star Wars on the big screen just hits differently. From the sound, to the special effects, to the picture, it's made for the best viewing possible.
I've seen ROTJ maybe 1,000 times? I actually saw it in 1997 for its first return to the theater after 1983. Tonight, in its new 4K Restoration, I saw things I never saw before! Background characters, facial expressions, details, and sound I couldn't hear on regular TV speakers.
It's amazing to see the full artistic picture of a film that I already loved dearly. The way it was meant to be seen. Star Wars means so much to me, and it's a blast to get lost in this universe, again.
"You failed your highness. I am a Jedi. Like my Father before me."
Return of the Jedi is one of the best films in the Star Wars saga. It brings the original trilogy to a satisfying and emotionally satisfying conclusion, while delivering plenty of action, humor, and iconic moments. The film is packed with memorable set pieces and stunning visual effects, and the Ewoks adds to the film's overall appeal. While some may criticize certain elements of the film, there's no denying that Return of the Jedi is a classic and beloved entry in the Star Wars franchise that deserves its place among the greats.
Watched on Disney Plus. Overall a good movie, but it was kind of predictable. The best thing I have found in the story is the strong bond between father and son that cannot be broken so easily, even if Lord Vader went to the dark side. The rest is cliché and a little repetitive of the previous two movies. Everything has to end up good and happy, and that is what happens. However, it was funny and entertaining, and the ewookees are such funny creatures. I guess, in the end, it was a good end to the trilogy.
At times it's a bit too cheesy and it shows, but overall still a charming ending of a trilogy. In some action scenes the way event sequences are clearly wayy too convenient sometimes does ruin the immersion sometimes though, and I couldn't really take the force and its good/dark side too seriously because of how vaguely it is explored.
Good conclusion to the saga, albeit with cliche and plot holes. Generous 7.5/10
Return of the Jedi is the quintessential film of the original trilogy. A New Hope is a better film, mind, but it had smaller ambitions and stood alone. Empire Strikes Back swung for the fences and had as much strikes as home runs. Return of the Jedi has the fun of a New Hope while paying off the setup of Empire Strikes Back to set the definitive Star Wars experience going forward. A New Hope is what Star Wars would've been if it was only one film. Return of the Jedi is it realizing it is a franchise, that it is not just a story but a Star Wars story.
The performances are the best they've ever been. Hamill has a moral strength as Luke, but portrays his explosive fury when Vader threatens Leia just as strongly. Ford's pissy snark has never been more entertaining, especially as he lashes out at the ever polite and out of his depth C-3P0. And Fisher exudes a delighted charm as she interacts with the Ewoks. Of particular note are Yoda, just as captivating here as he was in ESB, Vader, and The Emperor. The voicework of James Earl Jones and the body language of Prowse are in perfect synergy here. The grief and regret pour from every syllable, especially in Jones' weighty confession to his son that it is too late for him. And Prowse can make an emotionless helmet speak a million words. By slouching just right, or tilting his head at a certain angle, or deploying a lingering look, he conveys all the inner conflict of Vader. It's magical. Together, they create the Vader that always springs to mind when I think of the character: a man who hates what he's become, and when he sees one last chance for something to come out of it all, reaches for it with all he has.
And of course, Ian McDiarmid is a pleasure. He knows exactly what kind of film he's in and what character he's portraying. He's the embodiment of pure evil and revels in it, and by doing so becomes the face of villainy in the franchise. This performance is the start of a stranglehold he'll have over the films going further, both for better and worse.
The comedy lands more than it ever has. The Endor sequences sre some of the most fun and creative across the entire trilogy, and I'll say it; I like the Ewoks. They make a great contrast to the emotionless, ruthless Empire heading into battle with all the advantages. And they're cute! It's okay for things to be cute! And they even get a scene of pathos brief and underplayed enough to reinforce the evil of the Empire. The Vader-Luke duel as well is the best in the trilogy, showcasing Vader's inner conflict and Luke's growing power and rage.
Not everything is perfect. Jabba's Palace drags a bit, and the treatment of Leia and the Twi'Lek has not aged well. Boba Fett goes nowhere. Lando is criminally underserved. And Obi-Wan still never fully clicks. But that doesn't change Return of the Jedi being the film I picture first when I think of the original trilogy. A New Hope is the soul of the trilogy, Empire Strikes back the brain, and Return of the Jedi the heart. It is from the beating of this film that all the others would flow, for better and worse.
The third chapter in George Lucas his original Star Wars trilogy is tainted by the desire to make money and a film that children will love and buy toys for. All of that being said, the final face off between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader along with the emperor is why I give this film seven stars. The Ewoks walks were supposed to be Wookiee.
Luke was supposed to walk off alone like the lone gunman. Harrison Ford wanted Han Solo to die.
All of these character arcs ended up taking place over the course of the next two trilogy’s.
But had at least one of them happened here we would’ve had a stronger movie.
Let's not talk Ewoks or Special Editions. There's nothing that can be said or written that hasn't been done so before.
I loved Star Wars from the second I first watched it and that will never change. I made my peace with the prequels and can see what they brought to the whole despite the flaws they have.
This marked the first time I saw everything chronologically so far (incl. Clone Wars and Rebels) and some things just don't ad up.
F.e. how can Leia know anything about her mother ? Both children were taken away the minute they were born and Padme died right after giving birth. Bail Organa immediatly took Leia in. She should not be able to remember her birth mother.
And Obi-Wan was very reluctant to take on Anakin, let alone train him. He only did so because of a promise he made to the dying Qui-Gon.
You can find many more little discrepancies and this is not meant to be criticism of any kind. In any case in 1983 all this didn't apply. It just shows that it isn't easy to put a prequel story to an existing story without cutting some corners.
But like I said - I love Star Wars. I can easily live with all those things mentioned above.
Now, reluctantly I have to admit, I move on to the sequells.
Well, this is the perfect end to a pretty perfect trilogy, though it loses some of the seriousness of the previous film, I still think this film is pretty perfect with some amazing visuals and some really great acting. Sure it can get a little cheesy, but it never loses focus on the aim of the characters in the film and every scene between Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and James Earl Jones / Sebastian Shaw (Darth Vader) was so perfect and you could feel the intensity between the characters without spoiling anything.
I have genuinely fallen in love with this franchise and I actually don't hate some of the edits that were made in the special editions with the edit at the very end making a lot of sense and I think fans may appreciate it more now. Yes there were scenes that shouldn't have been edited but it is not the worst thing in the world, I do think the scenes should have been left alone but I can understand why they did make some of the edits.
This film is great and I definitely can understand why people like these films more than the prequels.
I'm not that much a fan of Return, but I reaaaally like the scene, when Vader talks to Luke the last time. So much led to that moment, which makes it always a pleasure for me to watch.
I just watched this to confirm how it's impossible for them to bring back the Emperor on The Rise of Skywalker.
The Star Wars saga comes to its epic conclusion in Return of the Jedi. While a lot of the material is familiar (Luke battling Darth Vader, Rebels attacking a Death Star, etc.), the film expands its universe to include new worlds and new characters; which keeps it fresh and exciting. The introduction of the Ewoks does this nicely, and sets the right tone of lighthearted adventure that captures the spirit of the series. And the storytelling is quite good; wrapping up most of the story arcs and subplots that have been woven throughout the three films. Return of the Jedi is incredibly fun and delivers a thrilling finale to the Star Wars trilogy. (Note: This masterpiece has since been bastardized by George Lucas in his Special Edition).
"Though failing to reach the cinematic heights of its predecessors, Return of the Jedi remains an entertaining sci-fi adventure and a fitting end to the classic trilogy."
This movie is really amazing. I loved the end.
And yet again...What prompted this rewatch was, of course, the untimely death of our courageous, powerful, and sweet "Princess" Carrie Fisher...may you Rest In Piece. We all miss you dearly...
Return of the Jedi didn't make as much impact on me as the previous two instalments of the original trilogy, but it was a fitting end for this part of the story.
Leia is more mature and in her iconic "Slave Princess" outfit. Luke have also matured (very little whining), Han is frozen, then lovestruck for the better part of the movie. Chewie is...well...Chewie. The droids have a lesser part, but still funny. All-in-all a good way to end it...
Now if only Lucas could have left these three movies alone. More CGI is not always the answer...
I can't review "Star Wars" as a movie. It represents absolutely everything good, fun and magical about my childhood.
I guess you had to be there to say something from a time past was boring by your standards today is such a shame if you were there when this cam out you would of said Luke turn to the dark side or I sense good in you father but to crap on a classic I feel sorry for yous I can only say this you had to be there sorry you weren't #ShiftvW8
Paco Cinema 1: image 4/5 in some scenes losing image quality. Sound 4.5/5. The Ewoks spare me
A finale to both the orginal trilogy and now to the entire saga, there are many threads that have to be wrapped here, some of which are not done entirely successfully, especially those relating to elements from the prequels. There is also a mid section of the film, which does tend to drag a little. However, the core story of Luke's transition to a Jedi and his confrontation with Vader are the strongest elements of the film, culminating in a stunning fight sequence which has lost none of its power and still induces goosebumps. McDiarmid is fantastic as the cackling villain, and the final 40 minutes of story, effects and action is brilliantly done and still holds up some 30 years later. A flawed but exciting end to the saga, backed by an emotional conclusion to the central plot focusing on Luke and Vader.
i liked that they showed anikan from the prequels in the end
First one i saw, somehow, probably still my favourite. Pacing is completely different to the other films, which i think i adore. I love the other movies, but this one is a great effort in producing a brilliant standalone, and pretty good finale. Just not the fucking bluray version.
*Yes, standalone. Try it. If i had to have one, and no others, itd be this one. Nostalgic bias? Possibly.
Comparing with it's previous Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, I think Star Wars Episode VI: Return of The Jedi felt a little less brilliant than the others but yet very good.
That's the point where the story finally gets more emotional due to Luke and Darth Vader and their father and son situation. I don't mind with that, I can understand the idea of ending the trilogy in a touching way and it's always good to see an happy ending.
But there are some points that didn't pleased much... Well, first of all Luke and Leia are in fact brother and sister but wait! They kissed each other on Episode V....
Then the Ewoks are cute and all but those small little creatures really are invincible! I guess they brought some goofy moments to the film and that might not have been a good choice. Talking about goofy moments, those party moments involving Jabba the Hutt were a bit ridiculous (that's when I realize that I was probably watching the 1997's version of the film??)
Overall, I really enjoyed it. Once again it is a magnificent adventure to watch and thankfully there are more good things about it than bad.
