Ratatouille 2007

Drawing from a near perfect body of work, Ratatouille is my favourite Pixar film.

Patton Oswalt, a self confessed lover of fine food, brings such credibility to Remy that I can't imagine his words passing another actors lips. With his every lament in the kitchen you can almost smell every ingredient and it never fails to make me salivate.

The great Peter O'Toole is masterful in his contempt and condescension as food critic Anton Ego, which makes the pay off all the more moving.

Director Brad Bird's (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) vision of Paris is gorgeous and Michael Giacchino's Oscar nominated score brings it to life.

More physical with its comedy than other Pixar films, it is a testament to the skill of the animators as it is all key framed, not motion captured.

More than just an ode to kitchen artisans, Ratatouille is about seeing through convention and letting nothing stand in the way of your dreams.

Now excuse me, I must away to the kitchen, I feel a dish coming on.

This is what you call a classic cartoon. I have watched this many times, I love it! This is my childhood. A solid 10/10.

I couldn't agree more with MajorMercyFlush. The atmosphere in this movie, the storyline, the characters and the music are just perfect.

Really a masterpiece from the director Brad Bird and the studio who has given us so many wonderful movies Pixar.

Why are films about cooking so inspirational?! Especially how this is about a rat cooking! The message of 'anyone can cook' really resonates here, even as an adult. It made me feel motivated and pumped and inspired and hopeful. It was a lovely feeling and the soundtrack really accompanied that as well as the wonderful animation and scenery of Paris.

Technically this movie had some amazing animation sequences. The realism of the rats when they were shown in packs was incredibly detailed. The story moves slowly and is probably going to be tough for busy body children to sit through.

"Ratatouille" has a nice moral of overcoming the odds and never giving up on your dreams. I did find it to be disappointingly average, though, given Brad Bird's past truly special animated films, namely "The Iron Giant" and "The Incredibles".

One of the few Pixar movies I hadn't yet seen. Like every single one of their other films, this is witty, beautiful and genuine, but in the end feels like light fare compared to some of the studio's masterworks. It doesn't have the suspense of The Incredibles, the heart of Up or the scale of Wall-E, for example, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it.

The script enjoys a few legit family-friendly laughs and the animation shows some moments of inspiration, (I really liked the visualizations of competing/combining flavors, for example) and it gets points for trying out a unique setting but this never really has that moment where everything shifts into overdrive. Ah, well. My least favorite Pixar effort is still better than most of the competition.

What a movie! For the life of me I don't know why I never watched this before, but it's really good. It isn't my favorite Pixar movie, but it's definitely one of the better ones. It's funny, inspiring and everything just clicks. I just really enjoyed it.

I didn't like the aesthetic of the movie at first but honestly it has such an amazing story that it makes up for it.

"If you focus on what you left behind you will never see what lies ahead!"

How come I had never seen this? Somehow it never crossed my mind to watch it but I was scrolling Disney + today and stumbled upon this ratastic movie.

I liked Remy, Alfredo and Emile the most! The animation looked great and the Paris setting was fun. I loved the story and the bond between Remy and Alfredo.

Pixar just almost never lets me down and this might be one of their best. I haven't watched a Pixar movie in a couple of years and I have some catching up to do but this one was long overdue and I had high expectations for it and it says something that it easily lived up to it. This one will definitely be watched again later down the line!

It's one of the better Pixar movies. It's for children (obviously!). And they will have a lot of fun I suspect. But it's also made for adults. It's awesome to see the world through the eyes of rodents. You learn a thing or two about the haute cuisine. It's also a monument to French cuisine. Annoyingly, every time Frenchmen are involved, Anglo-Saxons can't refrain from stereotypes and rekindling their French-American/Brritish rivalry - but I guess that's excused in such a cartoon-ish movie. Essentially it's a simple story about friendship and the value of even the most humble creature. But even this simple story is never boring.

Although you get kind of used to how amazing animation movies can look like, some scenes - like whenever water is involved - are amazing.

It's a solid 7/10.

Ratatouille is one of the best Disney Pixar movies to date. If you haven't seen it quite yet, for whatever reasoning, I'd suggest you do.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Ratatouille’:

  1. Dammit, Pixar. You did it again. So much heart behind a fairly simple story. Genuine tears flowed. And now the name of this film is more perfect than I ever expected it to be.

  2. One of my favorite elements of this story is that Remy longed to be a giver. He didn’t want to be the infamous, unlovable vermin known for pillaging and taking. Remy wanted to create and provide. This is a story about acceptance and being propelled by your passions. When you follow what you love, anything is possible.

  3. Food is a powerful thing. Beyond sustenance. Like music, it takes you back to specific places, moments, and — most importantly — people. When the critic bit into that ratatouille, I didn’t expect the scene that followed. It was incredibly moving.

Delightful. Top tier Disney, easily.

'Ratatouille' is a joy to watch. I love everything about this film, there is no lull in proceedings whatsoever. They get all the details spot on. From the French settings, to the animation, to the voice cast, to the pacing, to the score... it's sensational!

Patton Oswalt is fantastic as Remy, the guy has a great voice on its own but it suits the rat perfectly. Peter O'Toole, though not in it for large portions, is terrific as Anton Ego; especially at the end. Peter Sohn (Emile), Lou Romano (Linguini), Ian Holm (Skinner), Brad Garrett (Gusteau) and Janeane Garofalo (Colette) are also very good, all of those characters are memorable.

The premise is executed superbly, despite being absolutely bonkers - it actually adds some feasibility to it, which is nuts. The animation is brilliant, with Paris coming alive splendidly. I really liked the music, also.

I couldn't recommend this higher. One of my favourite Disney films, easily in their animated top five without doubt.
