Rakka 2017

[Netflix] Back to the apocalyptic future imagined by Neill Blomkamp that manages to create a terrifying and pessimistic atmosphere. "We were once mankind. Now, we are no more than pests." An immersive visual envelope accompanies a narrative that sometimes stumbles on some clichés of the genre. But he manages to make his 22 minutes disturbing, and at the same time reflect on the future-present humanity.

This needs to be a feature-length film, but it's not one that I'd watch, probably. Just the setup for it was so incredibly depressing, because Earth right now, six years on from this short's release, reaching that sort of state without alien assistance seems all too likely. As with the other two shorts from Season 1, this ended rather abruptly right as it was getting super interesting. The creature design was fantastic though, that seems to be one of Oats Studios' strengths, monsters and sound design.

Labeling itself an experimental short film sounds about right since it only exists to showcase a basic concept. That one is however not really thought out and has the depth of your generic videogame plot involving aliens. Feels quite pointless to watch (but hey, no one is forcing you to and it's free)...

I think there are better ways to get funding for a project which don't require a Studio to put all this effort in promo work. If the subsequent works don't involve known Directors or Actors they will certainly sink among the masses of media works.
