Promises / Les Promesses is like a boring business meeting: over-long, too political, and unnecessarily complicated.
This film about the mayor of an underprivileged Parisian suburb does little to keep our interest beside offering us Isabelle Hupert, who is a gift to every film she gives herself to, and the talented Reda Kateb, who brings his natural charm and incredible talent to the project.
At least the third act picks up, or perhaps -- like that business meeting -- I felt mildly euphoric at the thought it was almost over.
