Possessor Uncut 2020

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Possessor Uncut’:

  1. I struggled giving this a lower score because it’s such an intriguing concept and the beginning was super strong. The acting was great and the visuals were on point.

  2. I struggled giving this a higher score because I feel like the ball was dropped a bit at the end. I was left scratching my head more than I wanted to. I love me a smart film that doesn’t have to spell everything out for its audience, but I don’t love feeling unnecessarily dumbfounded.

  3. No matter what the hell just happened, this woman clearly shouldn’t be working anymore.

It was a really fucking creepy movie! I wasn't terrified, I was horrified.

Voss’s job failed colin’s mission on purpose in order to fully prepare her to succeed her handler. They had to implant a receptor into her son in order to possess him, so they planned well in advance.. This is actually a movie about how work feels entitled to (possess?) your life

Relies on visuals too much. It leaves you dissociated from the movies. The idea if good but seems wasted

Worst movie of 2020 so far. Couldn't even finish it. 30 min in I realized I don't care about the story.

Getting a tooth pulled would be less painful then trying to watch this.

Phenomenal! This is body horror at its absolutely best. Do not believe the rating this movie has here on Trakt.

So few horror movies really horrify. Possessor really horrifies.

Possessor is a DJ who plays good if somewhat specific songs at a party of strangers but doesn't know when to stop, so keeps playing even after everyone has given up and gone home.

Brandon Kronenberg (David's son) delivers a competent and two and a half hour slow burn sci-fi horror film that lasts an hour and and 45 minutes.

The idea (a future in which a hitman takes control of another's body in order to fulfill the contract) is original and the images are tailored but you'd think they could've spent less time artsy-ing around and more time on the story.

Slick sci-fi thriller/horror. Well executed but not that engaging for me. It felt like a David Croneneber film (Brandon's father) which is great. I loved the scenes about the displaced consciousness, with the mirrors and the creepy fluids. It lingered with me.

Good movie, great atmosphere and a visually interesting way of representing the character’s dissociation, without falling into Hollywood clichés.

Not an action movie, so, if you’re dumb as a Mellon, maybe don’t watch it.

I know there's not much that actually came out in 2020, but even without that caveat this was easily a favorite of this year. Brandon Cronenberg has created a heady mix of sci-fi, body horror, and espionage lathered with numerous questions about identity and self. I left this film feeling full of questions, as well as a bit squeamish as it pushed on some my existential buttons. I would recommend this, quite highly, especially if you're looking for something that might keep your head spinning for a few days.

Very interesting plot the opening scene is brilliant but i believe it could be better after watching first 15 minutes. Also i didn't like it was too slow by times. 6.5/10

An unusual film to be sure but still a pretty good one. I wish the story had been fleshed out a little more, perhaps with less reliance on blood and gore. However, it was still an interesting watch, with plot events that were hard to see coming.

While the concept is interesting and effects stellar, Possessor unfortunately moves along at a snail's pace that kills any tension it builds up almost immediately and replaces it with yet another glitchy, stroby effect.

I loved this movie. Possessor is visually striking, dark, superbly acted, cerebral, gory, and sometimes disturbing.

Meh...
The world-building was limited to the bare essentials. It handles the matter of identity more like a bad drug trip than an actual intelligent discussion. Christopher Abbott didn't do a good job signifying when the identities were switching.

This would have been a lot better if they had done some more world building, showing how this enterprise came to be and explore other possibilites of that body possessing machine. The ending also felt rushed.

The biggest takeaway from this film obviously is that Sean Bean survived. He lived!

Seriously Possessor's concept is fantastic. I really like the idea and the violence, damn it is brutal. But yeah I'm glad I'm not living in this alternate timeline of 2008. Like suddenly your conscious is being taken over. Creepy stuff. Andrea Riseborough is great and Jennifer Jason Leigh is just the cherry on top of the cake.

Before watching Possessor I thought it was about demons, don't know why. All I thought was that it looks like fun watching a demon possesion film directed by the son of David Cronenberg. But I was dead wrong but in a good way. This was way more like the Cronenberg legacy. Really a job well done by Brandon.

And yes, I always love it when Sean Bean lives!

I’ve never been so confused yet intrigued at the same time. Well done!

This movie seems to have a huge fan base and consistent high ratings. I could not get into it. Sure the "disturbing" factor is there, which is how I found out about it. But i just found the love incoherent and messy, and I'll be one of the few to lowball it's rating.

A thriller with science fiction, but much closer to the real environment we live in, nothing futuristic, but more minimalist.
The story is very good, very well constructed, dense, strong and impactful. The only thing I missed was more development of the main character, who is very interesting, as are the situations shown in the movie.

Possessor is not for the weak or the innocent. Brandon Cronenberg manages to portray violence with such weight that it crushes and psychological horror with such intensity that it throbs. The visual depictions of abstract ideas are brilliant and powerful. A brutal and distressing film that will invade your own pysche with force.

This movie could have been a Twilight Zone episode...

This is one crazy movie that will screw with your head, but really good at the same time. Brandon Cronenberg is really doing a good job at picking up after his father’s legacy.

Pretentious, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It leaves the feeling of uneasiness, those scenes - "inside battles" in the head of Colin and Vos are true Cronenberg and undoubtedly my favourite part of the film. My critique of the film is a lacking backstory, not enough is clear in the Vos's family relations. I guess the technical side of entering into someone else's brain wasn't even considered properly. Also, it's difficult to connect with any of the characters, but I guess that was on purpose.

Decent movie if violence and bloodshed is your thing. The confusing and extremely unclear storyline, however, made this very difficult to watch. I went into this blind, hoping the movie would be clear enough to realize and follow without the preconceived notions that reading a synopsis can often lead to, but wow... I know I'm clueless at times, and this movie was definitely one of those time. Going strictly by the film's title, I had an idea of what I was watching, but there was never any mention of what was happening, nor was there any offer of an explanation that would clarify what you were witnessing. I can't give this very high marks at all because it was so incredibly confusing and hard to follow. Almost immediately, you're jumping from one murder scene into a completely different story and you're left scratching your head wondering, "What just happened?" I can now say I watched it, but I can also say it wasn't worth watching.

It offers many great blood and gore moments much to the detriment of the sci-fi elements who were tossed aside. I did love the idea for the tech and wanted to know so much more about how it works and also the company. The story feels incomplete and the ending wasn't great.

not a bad movie at all, worth watching above most of nowadays movies.

I thought the premise was really stupid.

The director is definitely his dad's son.

[Sitges FF] The concept of a criminal corporation that uses mind control to carry out its crimes is fabulous. The movie grabs one of the most shocking prologues I've seen recently. There is extreme violence (perhaps gimmicky) but dosed. It is a psychological thriller which is interested in throwing at the viewer the unknown of the possessed possessor. And it develops, with some imbalances of rhythm but with efficiency, a complex plot about a society subjected to strict control.
