I think this was a good movie. There were some parts of it I didn't quite understand - like how the Abbey wasn't sued and the people responsible incarcerated for their crimes - but overall, it's a different kind of movie, and a story that needs to be told and heard.
Emotonial story great movie but not the best in this kind of movies!
Just watched on Showtime Anytime :D
Sorry all men, but this movie really hit all the right strings and break the heart can only woman. Wow. Judi Dench better than Meryl!
I knew that I almost certainly would like this film but I had a different idea of what it would be. I didn't expect such a wonderful, sweet and heartbreaking story.
This tells the story of Philomena Lee and the jornalist who got interested in helping her in the pursuit of her lost child. This woman passed through some rough times in her life. She got pregnant, her family abandoned her in a convent for girls in the same situation of Philomena's to be punished by her sins. They were slaved by the sisters of the convent, and they just could see their children for one hour a day. Posteriorly they sold their babies to American families.
The catholic issues addressed in this story are very controversial and unfortunately all very real. What can be more suffocating than keeping a painful secret during 50 years? What can be more arduous than taking away a child from her mother? What can be more disturbing than telling someone that the consequences of their misfortune of loosing a child to a stranger and never hear about him anymore, was their punishment because they had sin by having sex? This is very sad.
Judi Dench is wonderful in here. She brings the right humour and the right emotion for the story and her performance feels so true. Steven Coogan is very good also in a much more engaging and serious role.
Philomena is the simple yet painful story of a wonderful woman. At the end you just wanna give Philomena Lee a big hug!
Bigger than the religious matter around the story this film has a much important question to ask us: Are we capable of forgiving? I think that is the strong message that it wants to transmit.
Philomena Lee's character is endearing y Julie Dench's performance is fascinating. It was a sad story, but melancholically well told.
I watched this film primarily as a fan of Steve Coogan and went into it completely blind. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I think it's fair to say that I wasn't expecting this. I didn't know it was based on a true story, and I certainly wasn't familiar with that true story beforehand. As such, it was able to surprise me on more than one occasion with the stranger-than-fiction details of its tragic story. Judi Dench's central performance is excellent, successfully capturing the emotions and contradictions of Philomena, as well as the light hearted quirkiness of an out of touch elderly Irish woman. Steve Coogan doesn't disappoint either, still injecting plenty of the sarcasm and wit that we know and love, but at the same time hitting his mark during the more serious beats of the film.
An incredible movie, that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Funny yet utterly devastating.
A vexing but solid drama. 6/10
So I saw Philomena and it was kinda good. It's definitely a solid movie but solid is where it stops. It's still a good movie but the entire time I kinda got a made for TV vibe from it. Steve Coogan was basically playing Steve Coogan but Judi Dench did a great job playing her character as a somewhat sheltered and confused old woman. Some other performances were also pretty really good. Every aspect of the film was good but the director didn't really do anything to define the film as his own and I don't see him becoming a name that I remember.
I really enjoyed it but in a year from now I don't think I'm going to really remember much of this movie. There were moments where certain aspects of the movie stood out enough for me to appreciate them. I really like that there was some effort put in to keeping it consistent with the time period and do think that a big part of Judi Dench being able to play her character so well is how she was written. but the vast majority of the film went by without really giving me anything to chew on. It was all good, it was all correct, but there's an infinite supply of good and correct movies out there. And to me, this movie's destined to be lost underneath all the other ones. That being said, if you find yourself personally relating to the topic or subject matter, don't be afraid to call it one of your favourites.
But to me, this is pretty minimal for what could be called an Oscar movie. Check it out and see for yourselves but I'm giving this one a six out of ten.
Philomena was quite enjoyable but unfortunately got a bit heavy-handed with the anti-Catholicism by the end. Some of the characterisation also seemed very inconsistent with Philomena herself being way too progressive with her attitude towards homosexuality compared to the rest of her personality. There's a difference between being accepting of it and being an almost-80-year-old who freely throws around the term 'beard'.
About a girl, her son and... road to forgiveness.
Surprised at how fantastic this was. At turns both extremely moving and hilarious. Most of the comedy comes from Dench's naivety and so can be a little obvious but she has perfect comedic timing and Coogan is a great foil for her. Also, Evil Nuns FTW!
this movie is about a mother who was forced to surrender his biological child to an adoptive family all on account of religion and fanatical believers, the fairs lied to mask the pain and this is not the purpose of jesus. this woman have the heart and happiness hurt for never having the chance to touch in her son .the interesting is that they past the whole life trying to find each other and never lost the hope, that one day they can meet in heaven. so if you have a dream never give up on him, because that is the purpose of life search for truth. '' Dream it, believe it, make it happen''

I was hesitant to watch this movie and not in the mood to watch a heavy drama. To my surprise it was amazing. No forced drama and it was actually to my great surprise a lot of fun to watch. This movie was faster and more fun and more thrilling that Amazing Spider-Man 2!
