Permanent Vacation 1981

An interesting film by Jim Jarmusch. As with most of Jarmusch's films, it requires the audience to work a little. This one is a bit surreal, but makes perfect sense if you bother to do what is required of you. Easy enough to do so. Just let the clues lead the way and they will reveal their story. Everything about Permanent Vacation takes the viewer on this permanent vacation of sorts. Every character in their own right has taken some sort of a permanent vacation from something - reality, responsibilities, expectations or conforming to society in some way. Even the film itself does so by not fitting in quite right with various locations, common plot lines, or storytelling. Of course, that's partly what I love about Jim Jarmusch's work so much.

Not Oscar material, but certainly appealing to the Bohemian set, especially the more intellectually driven type. It's also not Jarmusch's best work, but will provide you with a background of where his roots took shape to where his latter works evolved.
