Perfect Blue 1998

I thought that the movie was just alright until the last third where shit just went crazy. Just like Mima, I couldn't tell what was real or not. This was definitely a unique and awesome mindfuck. Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Millennium Actress, Paranoia Agent) is without a doubt a master of the psychological thriller genre. I just wish that he could have gotten the chance to create many more films.

This film was way ahead of its time. I love how it reels you in, and never lets you go.

This movie sucks you in and doesn't let go. It's very interesting, very unique, and makes you wonder what's real and what isn't. I highly recommend it

Expected more from this anime seeing that its a cult classic and all.

A mesmeric blend of fragmented realities, disconcerting visuals and social commentary. Some of the best editing I have ever seen, conflates reality and illusion with ease and verve all the while culminating to a deceptively simple finale. Splendid yet trauma inducing animation.

Also shines a light on the dark side of fame and celebrity culture and the dissociation of identity someone might feel working under the lime light. Satoshi Kon at his best, we lost him too soon.

Okay, I got so confused with this movie.

Do you know what it is to be famous, do you think you could handle it? Well now you can experience the trials and tribulations of an upcoming career in Show Business. It's surreal, but to me, an accurate portrait of what life in the spotlight must ultimately feel.

This is a must watch and not because it's anime but because a film like this has yet to be made, any other way.

“Perfect Blue” is a unique psychological thriller that explores multiple personalities and the dark side of the internet in its early days. The sharp critique of the Japanese show-business and “idol” culture is obvious and sadly still relevant today.

The low-budget animation and peppy start can be misleading, but Satoshi Kon’s sophisticated direction succeeds at slowly building up suspense and tension to the point that we completely lose our sense of reality towards the end. The film clearly inspired Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan”, and possibly David Lynch’s “Inland Empire” in the way multiple realities meld through cinema.

Unfortunately, despite the fascinating premise and engaging development, the final plot twist and ending failed to meet my expectations. I guess that Kon was trying to avoid the usual cliche of psychological thrillers, but it felt like a random choice to make.

I don't know whats real. I started questioning my own reality. Masterpiece!

What the actual fuck did I just watch. This is by far the best psychological thriller I have ever watched.

What is real? What is not? This is no movie, this is a puzzle where even after you solve it, you wont understand it? That's the point of this whole movie, to confuse the viewer to distinguish what's real and not. After the whole first act of the movie the viewer's mind is twisted in a way that questions the very fabric of reality.

Did you get it? Fuck No. Does it matter? Fuck no.
The beauty of this movie doesn't lie in if you understand the movie or not but on HOW you understood the movie, the movie opens itself up to many theories, this is the kind of movie where you contemplate, experience, debate about what happened why it happened and how it happened.

I think I need to watch this again before I can properly voice my thoughts on it. My thoughts are currently a jumbled mess, and I'm going to be thinking about this film for a while.

Fits perfectly in the paradigm of movies about a fake reality/double personality from around the time (Fight Club, American Psycho). It’s not the best version of those movies, as I was a little ahead of the movie at times due to some set-ups being too obvious. Still, I like how trippy it gets (it almost feels like proto Nolan at points) and the third act will stay with me for a while. The soundtrack is excellent, and while the animation is good, it could’ve used a little more detail or character. It’s most distinguishing feature is easily found on a deeper level, as I love the debate it engages in about artistic expectation vs artistic desire.

7.5/10

"Illusions can't come to life."

From start to finish Perfect Blue makes you question what's real and what's not, exactly like what our main character is going through. A journey into pure insanity and confusion! Did any of it make any sense? No idea, and I believe that was the whole point, nothing makes sense when you're going crazy. It portrays excelently the terrifying reality of what it is to be famous and being exploited as a female in the industry. Lots of stalker stressful moments and psychological distress. Made in 1997 but I love the animation style it's very colorful and makes a perfect contrast with the terrible stuff happening between the lines. I also believe animation was the perfect medium for this story, I just can't see it being as good in live-action. Killer soundtrack. I question the inclusion of the gratuitous pornographic sexual violence i'm not sure if it was necessary, it's definitely mysogenic and exploitative - but then again this is a story with strong themes of exploitation. An absolute trip into the human psyche that'll make you question your sanity, this is horror!

A beautifully tragic story.
Slight spoilers ahead:
Although being disturbing and terrifying, this was a not a bad watch and it did a great job at depicting dissociation and depersonalization artistically. I personally think the mixture of reality and daydreams was a good method to make the viewers to be in shoes of the protagonist and feel her emotional struggles. Perfect Blue was also an interesting emotional roller-coaster with good pacing and the story itself is timeless, so as a result, it keeps you hooked.
Still, I have a mixed feeling about recommending this movie to a small percentage of people since it's very graphic, chilling and gets hard to understand at times for some people.

Edit: Small corrections on the sentence structure.

It blew my mind. I can't wait to see more of Satoshi Kon's work. I highly recommend it if you are into dream sequences, bending reality, Inception... and all that kind of thing.

• The imaginative and unconventional creativity is remarkable; it's hard to believe this is a work from 1997. Even calling it a 2017 production would still be considered somewhat avant-garde.
• However, it's evident that this type of animation is geared towards adults, and very much so.

However, she struggles to adjust to her new career and identity as her sense of reality starts to fracture.

Key points:

  • The film has gorgeous animation and visual style. Satoshi Kon uses interesting editing techniques and transitions between fantasy and reality.

I'm sure some scenes are very confusing, but that's also by design. I'm surprised about the ending as well, as I didn't believe it would end in such a "happy" way. I also think the more social media and the internet have grown, the more relevant this movie has become.

Okay first thing that you have to understand is that I really hate movies where I can't tell whats real or not, I really really really hate Black Swan, I despise it! But this movie I love, this movie is amazing! If you're like me in a way that you run away if you see a single mention that something might be like Black Swan, I think you should give this movie a chance anyway. I loved this movie's incredible social commentary. It made me feel my prejudices instead of showing them to me. I also was incredibly impressed with the way point of view is handled. I don't know how to describe it but it really feels like I've seen the world through the eyes the protagonist. How she relates to people and how she sees and feels the world, I understood and felt it on a visceral level. I've seen so many films shot and written by both women and men that completely fail to do the thing that this movie does perfectly: the dreaded female gaze.

This movie traumatized me as a kid I never want to watch it again now that I'm an adult. Good movie though but my decision stand still. I won't want it again.

So, there I was, mouth ajar for at least half of the movie because of how in shock and confused I was.

A unique (at the time) and ambitious narrative artifact that represents, in an unusually dark fashion, the toxic relationships of power that rule the popular culture and industry in Japan, where idols and celebrities are dissolved within their own fictional personas. Satoshi Kon excels again at playing with layers of reality, collective paranoia and personal traumas.

Man, this movie was something, alright. I'd liken it to a fever dream? It was a wild ride and I was kept on my mental toes throughout. If you get to the end wondering what the hell you just watched, I recommend reading the plot synopsis online; It helped me a lot to collect my thoughts.

Just seen this on All Hallows' Eve. Old but gold! Definitely have to rewatch this, because you just got to pay attention to 'know' what is happening and follow the story. But every time you think you got it all figured out, you learn something new and turn out to be all wrong.

I loved all those plottwists and the is-it-real-or-not feeling like, is it really REALLY happening? Is it really acting for her job as a actress, or is it all just a trick of the mind...

I am SO buying the Blu-ray that has finally been released in this country!
