Paper Flags 2018

Drapeaux de Papier / Paper Flags is an overlong love letter that says nothing new but says it extremely well exchanged between brother and sister.

When you want to make an indie film, the most important thing is everything. There are so many ways to make a movie look amateurish, so you need to have good actors, a decent story and a strong director. Both lead actors in Paper Flags (Noémie Merlant and Guillaume Gouix) have been nominated for Caesars (French Oscars) and while the story is well written (if not terribly unique), what really is a stand out here is the directing, which creates a sense of intimacy so intense it borders on discomfort. And when you learn writer / director Nathan Ambrosioni was only 18 years old when he made this movie...

For such a young man to create such a mature work is heartening and bodes very well for the future of French cinema. I can't wait to see what Nathan has in store for us next.
