some cool ideas, but over all SCRUB'S!!!!
Before you read this, note that I had read the book before watching the movie.
At first, I was like... Dude, no. They completely changed the story line. They changed the main character, gave her a completely different background, even key points about her (especially when they said her brother had died, which in the book doesn't happen, instead she fell asleep inside her car in the garage, while the car was still running, which ended up on her being intoxicated by all the gasses). Even her first dare was completely different, and her best friend Sydney din't actually sign up for the game in the book.
However, as the movie went on, I thanked the directors for changing the course completely. It got even better than the book. The outcome was amazing, in my point of view. Emma Roberts and Dave Franco were the best cast I could ask for for these two, and it's nice seeing them playing roles completely different than what I was used to.
The only thing that disappointed me was that while the book has an open ending, which might mean that if the writer ever wants to do it, she can come back and write a sequel, this movie ends with no prospect for a second movie. Which isn't necessarily bad, but I liked this so much that I wouldn't mind a second one.
Emma Roberts and Dave Franco star in the intense techno-thriller Nerve. Tired of being teased for being shy and reserved, high school senior Vee Delmonico enters an underground online competition where she must complete a series of challenges to earn money and gain followers; but she soon ends up on a destructive path and discovers that the game can just as easily bankrupt and destroy her. Roberts and Franco are both extremely charismatic and have good chemistry together. And the challenges are rather daring and full of danger. But the plot is pretty formulaic and falls apart at the end when it gets preachy and tries to work in a moral about social responsibility and violence. Yet while it’s kind of a stereotypical thriller, Nerve’s strong cast and directing elevates it, making it incredibly exciting.
7.5/10 - This is actually really good IMO. The interesting but also super scary thing is that this isn't that far fetched and could theoretically happen IRL (I'd view this as pre Cyberpunk). It might sound crazy but remember that we already have pretty crazy internet challenges today and some people did really die! I wouldn't be surprised if people are already doing dares via Twitch, Onlyfans(?), etc., we have challenges via Tik Tok (etc.), and daredevils upload videos to YouTube where they climb cranes like in the movie (even hanging down on two arms) and IIRC I've even seen some crazy shit with trains (feeling rightfully guilty for even watching such things even though I at least dislike the videos :o). Anyway, the crazy thing is that some people do such extreme/dangerous/dumb things. The only thing missing is the Nerve app. Thankfully that part would be difficult to pull off (e.g. ethical concerns, difficulty to make money with illegal apps, and app store bans). But the movie even gets the technical stuff surprisingly right [1] (not perfect but better than most other movies). In theory it should be possible to write such an app but it would be difficult for normal people to get and install (would get banned on app stores and after/if it gets banned on the web people would have to use the dark web - which isn't really difficult but still requires too much effort/dedication for most to invest like half an hour).
I really liked the very creative end credits btw.
IIRC the main annoying thing was Vee's mom. I don't think that character was really necessary (she felt more like a stupid and overreacting teenager) but at least there where few scenes.
[1] - Technical issues: The few "computer/hacking scenes" are too fancy and have mistakes but are based on real ideas. The app very likely wouldn't be open-source and such a majority based approval system would be super unlikely (difficult to set up, botnets could be used to infect the app with malware/exploits, less control for the creators, etc.). Live streaming requires a lot of bandwidth and doesn't seem realistic for a P2P network (peer-to-peer - i.e. the device of every watcher also serves as a "server", like in the movie). The money transactions via banks aren't anonymous and cryptocurrencies are too annoying/complicated for users. Hacking the bank account of a specific user only really works via phishing (i.e. exploiting the user, not the system). Scraping private information from a users social media accounts (like at the beginning) requires user interaction/approval (semi-joke: except for Facebook, there you only need a bit of money :P). So actually a lot of flaws but again, I don't find the idea too far fetched.
It was... refereshing and i got more out of it then I expected. Really good movie for movie night withs friends that even led to some nice discussions. Would watch again.
Enjoyable, better then i expected
Really enjoyed this one. Its not really a typical movie, its pretty fast paced kind of teen movie crossed with an action movie similar to Crank. The soundtrack is a particular highlight as are the costumes and that green dress... wow! The performances are pretty solid as well, there is enough to keep viewers interested throughout the whole movie. I thought the social media bits were particularly well done as well as the stylistic end credits. The Neon cinematography theme of the locations works really well too although the hacker bits can be a bit cheesy. Overall I'd definitely recommend this movie just because its a little bit different.
Okay.. This was actually better than expected. I like it definitely worth a watch.
Nice to see Emma Roberts play an innocent girl for once. She proves that she can do more than just play a bitch, like in Scream 4, American Horror Story and Scream Queens. Despite being 25. She's like Britt Robertson where she can play a teen still. Plus Dave Franco plays a cool kid for once and pulls it off.
Nerve isn't great but it's likeable due to the leads. The story is decent too if you like a cutsie teen version of the movie the Game.
I agree with Barbie Klaus... I watched this not long after coming out and was expecting something treacherous. Ok maybe not that bad bc it does have Emma and Dave.. and MGK?? Anyway if you haven't yet taken the time out to watch this film it is worth the view and even not too far out of reach when you need something on but just for substance.
I read the Book this story based on and thought "Why isn't there a movie of that yet?" and 1 or 2 years later Nerve came up. I was instantly hyped and watched it in the cinema. I have to say I really get goosebumps at some parts of the movie. They changed the challenges and some backgroujd Informations but of course the story had the same orientation. As I said I really liked the movie. But the ending in the book was way better in my opinion. In the movie it kinda is pretty boring and disappointed, at least a little bit. Still recommend it, but you should read the book before ;)
In itself, this film is great, however, watching the trailers destroys this film, as they literally show the ending... I don't know who thought it wouldn't spoil anything, but okay...
It fits the scene of today, looking forwards to possibilities of smartphones and literally integrate them into our daily life.
There are, however, things that bother me at this movie, which is primarily caused by inadequate acting and lacking the ability to truly make an ending to this all (the ending is quick and rather dull when I am honest...)
The movie had an interesting concept, but what threw me off was the execution. Tech in this universe didn't make sense, regular items that we use today like macbooks and iphones were suddenly capable of doing impossible things which came across as very cheap and lazy writing. It also paralleled John Wick 2 in the way it portrayed almost EVERY other person in New York City as a "Watcher", which made for a lot of ridiculous moments where crowds of people waving their phones around would simply appear anywhere the main characters where. For a so called "secret" game it didn't feel very secret at all.
Towards the third act i was genuinely interested in what was going to happen in the "final dare", but it turned out to be unbelievably stupid and ridiculous. As if weak millennial SJWs were suddenly going to turn into savage barbarians who lust for blood. Give me a break.
I really enjoyed this movie! It was very unlike anything I'd ever seen and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout! Definitely want to watch again.
Better than expected tbh, and with a good pace, although the end was a bit over the top for me, we're talking about kids let's be honest.
I wasn't at all sure I would enjoy this; the synopsis is kind of vague and (being a "seasoned citizen") I'm not all that into "teen" or "tween" movies but I stuck with it and wow! was I impressed. The acting was decent, the story was quite different (and that's a good thing these days!) and the suspense was completely awesome. This showed up on a list (from another web source) entitled 10 Movies To Watch If You Enjoyed Watching 'SAW X' and while I haven't seen the latest one, Saw X I have watched the others in the franchise; I'm not at all sure how or why someone would consider this to even be on the same plateau as any of the Saw movies but that should take NOTHING away from the merits of this film. There's no violence or gore, no twisted psychopathic mentality, no torture games like you have in Saw . What you have in Nerve is an almost non-stop barrage of nerve-jangling dares (some laughable, some that will make your stomach queasy) that will have you breathing huge sighs of relief when the flight touches safely down on the tarmac at the end of an hour-and-a-half of twisting, turning, turbulence. I had a hard time feeling anything for Juliette Lewis' character "Nancy Delmonico" (the 'mom') but that was about the only one I couldn't really buy into. The others had you wondering which direction they were gonna spin...and that, IMO, makes for an interesting twist in a story. Overall, I came away from this one highly entertained and impressed, and glad that I spent the 97 minutes to enjoy this one.
This movie is made for 14-15 y/o's I guess.
Peer pressure crazyness. It shows all the bad things that come from that.
Hope people watching this realize what a stupid shit comes from giving in to these kind of things because other people tell you to do dares or just are convincing you to do even simple things you dont really want to. Have a spine. Say no.
Ending of the movie is one big disappointment though...... too bad.
Better than expected and if it hadn't been for the moral lesson that got thrown in our face in the end it would've gotten a higher grade.
Lol listen to the yms commentary on YouTube while you watch this, so funny
An ok movie, meaning the action, as the beginning and the end ( after the game) are very weak.
We don't even know what happens to the characters.
It's an ok movie, where I don't seem to have much of a rewiew to do, it's just a pink and sf movie.
It only deserves grade 7.
crap, dont watch it. It's just waste of time.
It's good! I'm a sucker for game-themed movies. It's entertaining and thrilling.
Really liked the general mood and atmosphere, the neon lights and stuff. Though there might be room for some improvement in the story, they still did a decent job. Plus I love Emma and Dave, so.
If you want a cancer from sweetness in this movie instead of action you will love it!
the plot is kind of whatever to me, in the way that most social media plots are when i've been spoiled by a series like black mirror, BUT like other commenters have said, the actors are all believable and emma roberts is a surprisingly likable protagonist. i've lowkey always liked her crazy bitch roles but i'm glad she's proving to be more versatile. and i love dave and samira so much that i would probably watch two hour footage of a garbage dump if either had a brief cameo, so that helps. this is one of those movies that exceeds expectations if you go into it just expecting a quick, entertaining movie - it's nothing groundbreaking, but it's certainly memorable.
I liked it. Cool story, nice characters and actors did a good job.
It's an OK movie... For starters, the soundtrack is great and the storyline is interesting, with all its black-mirrorness. But I found it poorly executed in so many ways... The way they interact with the macbook, sometimes touching the screen, sometimes using the trackpad, it's just one of many weird interactions from the characters with technology. Also, I was watching on "Brazilian Netflix" and apparently they translated only half of the messages on-screen, in a way that sometimes we saw "watcher" and "player" both translated and original on the same scene.
TL;DR: Interesting concept, cool music, poor execution
This was excitingly fun! Sure there were some things that seemed bit unbelievable, but it's not a documentary :D entertaining!
Good idea. Good cinematic.
BUT
If you want to make movies with tech/hacker stuff, please consult someone who has at least a bit of an idea what he's talking about. This incredibly poor (and wrong) use of tech terms etc. was awful. I've to add that I watched the german version (love to see that all texts were converted btw.) but I guess english version is not better regarding this matter. And don't get me even started with the lecturing regarding social media at the end…
Interesting concept but altogether the movie was quite blah… I could imagine a social media hype around a game like this but parts are just too far fetched…
Especially the police not doing anything and not being able to react on this game…
Actors are really bad – but might be because Dave has not improved since Scrubs…
From the start it forcefully tried to be a teen movie. A social media using photographer girl was obsessed over a boy. Characters I really don't care about. This movie felt awkward to watch as an adult. Embarrassing. The use of the Internet culture made me cringe as it isn't exactly worthy of a glamorised or intelligent setting.
The music will make this age badly.
This movie is an experiment of mixing up things teens like to try and make a product.
New age thriller/drama, good movie and good cast.
Terrible movie. the plot was ok, some acting was ok too, and that is it. This is were the good things about this movie, ends. the script is absurd, the direction is weak... the photography is ok, but they try to hard to create an identity. don't waste your time expecting a good movie, its a "fun" movie for those who still dont wanna grow up beyond the adolescence or for 14 year old humans.
Ok, this was a really fun movie, and it makes very smart points about social media and reality shows, the need for internet fame/attention and how teenagers interact with this culture of instant gratification and the protection of a screen name. The dark turn the story takes is yet another reminder that the things we do online may have very real consequences even if at first it all looks like a harmless game and a joyful thrill. (Unfortunately, if people haven't learned this by now, when will they?)
One should note though that this movie also works fine if you just want to ride along and not think at all, you won't be bored!
The one thing to lament is the aforementioned bland ending, which I guess was severely edited for whatever reason, making the whole development slightly choppy from the moment when Vee is branded a traitor. Story runs pretty smoothly until that point though.
All actors did a really good job, and the movie visuals are great, making NYC look a bit cooler and more high-tech than it actually is. Soundtrack does a fine job in fitting each scene just right, and you know, the plot is actually interesting for once. As noted, Emma Roberts did a wonderful job in the lead role, and Vee is a quite likable character!
One particular point that scored high for my personal taste is the fact that violence and sexuality were not exploited, even when this movie could have done it and make it seem perfectly justifiable. There are a couple of scenes in which characters show up in their underwear, but there's nothing even implicit, which makes it quite suitable to watch with younger kids in the room.
Keep in mind my score is really mostly based on personal taste, but I would still say that the overall quality of the movie would reach a 7 if I weren't biased.
Silly, but a very fun watch in a 'Hackers' kind of way
Surprisingly I really enjoyed this movie. I expected it to be somewhat boring and expected, well it was a little expected but definitely not boring!
Also I really enjoyed the music in it, it made sense and was pretty good.
I swear my mouth bled somewhere in the movie because I was actually nervous! Just imagine a game like this actually exists, I can't imagine how horrible people would be or how much they would do for money.
Thank god it doesn't exist (or we think?) and lets hope its doesn't exist.

The Nerve concept is certainly interesting but the execution just isn't quite there. Dave Franco and Emma Roberts do what they need to do but the whole film crumbles in the third act. There was potential here but Nerve becomes another average teen film.
Good watch if you have nothing else to watch really. not a bad movie. not something epic either
I really love this movie. Some people might think this more for teen to 20 something. I'm 38 and I love it. It thrilling and has a cute love story.
Enjoyable and interesting at the beginning but I don't know, it just went from good to meh, and I was expecting some other ending, at least a better one.
millennials being millennials. so dumb that i actually this would happen in real life.
the end of our society.
Good for watching meanwhile doing other stuff :)
The plotting loses its nerve toward the end. A pity, because the concept is good but is ultimately unsatisfactory.
Not a bad film, I dare you to watch it, but for anybody looking for something edgier I recommend Cheap Thrills.
Clearly those who made this movie know nothing about computers, the last part was just pathetic. At least do some minimal research...
Dope ass soundtrack, semi decent tech-fu that so many other movie's and TV show's completely fail at... yeah, certainly an enjoyable ride.
For me as a "computer guy" it was completely non-sense and irritating. But if you don't understand computer's and phones and don't know how they work you will be fine and you'll probably enjoy the movie. It's short, action, and there is something happening all the time. No boring passages.
well i loved this one, and it's nice to see Emma and Dave together.
This is one of those movies that rely pretty heavily on concept and design more than the actual writing, and that’s okay this time. I feel like I’ve seen this idea done differently in different projects, but it seems to work out in more of a natural fashion for Nerve. Other than the idea alone, you’ll notice this movie focuses pretty heavily on electronic music and visuals – the entire thing is basically what the poster looks like – one big neon lights sign. These types of movies are hard for me to get into, but thankfully, I do like the cast and I sort of like the characters too…which makes for a decent viewing experience.
Interestingly enough, this movie could have gone a completely different direction pretty easily. I half expected this movie to be a spiritual spin-off of The Purge or something similar, and have a ton of people daring the characters to kill people everywhere. While the threat of death is in this film…it’s not a horror film. Instead, at its worst, it is a simple thriller, which is a refreshing change of theme for this type of flick.
I can’t say I’ll be buying this movie. It was an interesting change of pace, but ultimately not something I care to see again. Instead, I’ll recommend my readers rent it to start, and if you like it, buy it. It won’t be for everyone, and I highly doubt it’ll win any Oscars, but it is entertaining for what it’s worth
It's dumb, but ultimately in a good way. Lots of fun.
I was really pumped for the movie... then I saw the trailer and I felt it spoiled too much.
Then I saw it and got pleasantly surprised - great directing, editing, music and acting, of course! For a "teen" movie it was actually distanced from most of the teen stuff. Yes, there were some underdeveloped characters and subpolts but I can look past that simply because I felt engaged in the the events.
It is a must see if you ask me!

Well, I compleatly enjoyed the movie. I like the music in the movie, it fits in perfectly. The screenplay was nice and acting was good, but the ending for me felt rushed. It feels like they could have made it better, but I still liked it! But I don't know how the book is, so can't say how different the book and the movie is. Maybe I should read the book!
And what is it with movies and trailers lately. In the trailer when Vee goes to the cop car, the police officer know her name and seems to be "part of the game". But it was not like that in the movie. And when i first saw the trailer, that part made the movie seem "better?". But well, I guess the trailers now days lie about the movies ;) cough cough suicide squad
