Just finished watching it, 6.5/10 for me. It was interesting but I guess I was too excited to see what they make of the movie, not a solid hollywood production but it was good. You'll like it but get bored at some points. could have been better
In short awesome.
I had my expectation & also worried that it would let me down considering numerous failed reboot. Mortal Kombat(2019) delivers what it promised & good number of fan service cameo of 90s movie. The way they changed & applied new sequences to old story line is simply creative and amazing.
It didn't fail to bring me the nostalgia of the old movie & sophistication of 21st century. It may have been created for fans but it doesn't fall short as standalone movie. I wish they'll bring out the sequel of this movie as early as possible.
I’m hearing that people are upset that there is no tournament here, but I think it kind of works. They set up and introduce a bunch of ridiculous characters and the idea of the tournament in a mostly satisfying way. I’m definitely one to get annoyed when a movie just feels like it’s setting up a sequel but I did not have that problem with this one.
Mortal kombat, one of the best video game movies I've seen in recent years. It is full of reference to the franchise and Easter eggs, ina few words it is full of fanservice, but I am not saying it badly, on the contrary, it is enjoyed and I know that it will be enjoyed by any other fanatic of the video game franchise of mortal kombat, why this film is made especially for fans, especially the ending that promise us a second part and the introduction of one of the most important characters of the game.
A simple plot that’s easy to follow, a little on the cheese side but with it’s good cast, great action with some cool effects with added gore, the style along with a crazy australian guy with the comedy one-liners i’ll let that cheese fade so it wasn’t a fatality and actually good and lots of fun in my opinion and did hear they could be two more and I wouldn’t say no if they keep it that level or better.
Overall, it’s exactly what you’d expect from Mortal Kombat; it’s bloody, gory and a bit brutal.
Without a doubt, my favourite part was Scorpion throwing in his most famous line. All the other Easter egg one-liners felt a bit forced though. A few nice iconic moves were thrown in too, which was cool.
Most characters were completely on point and flawlessly portrayed, especially Kano, Shang Tsung and Kabal. I just love how much of an utter dick Kano is!
All in all, watchable. Don’t go in expecting a deep, meaningful story because that’s just not what you’ll get. It is what it is, and what it is is mindless fighting.
Utterly disappointed. Movie felt very rushed and the editing was awkward. They skimmed right through any sort of world building. For example, literally zero explanation of why the Lin Kuei was sent to kill Hanzo or what the motivation is for Bi Han to align with Shang Tsung... or how he was able to live for centuries. The addition of Cole was completely unnecessary. MK is too rich with characters and lore that this addition is completely unjustified. The movie was stuffed with fan service and zero substance. No Mortal Kombat tournament actually took place and they had the audacity to make Shang Tsung say next time he’s bringing an army? Die hard Mortal Kombat fans should feel insulted by this movie.
I just can't understand why this movie has garnered so much hate in this platform.
If we really compare this movie to past sequel & reboot like Pacific Rim & Disney's, this movie still stands out as far better than any of those. I don't think the commenters have actually seen the B grade movies seeing how they blatantly compare it with them. You need to actually watch the movies with B grade production values to understand one.
Yes, some moment & scenes might feel stiff and felt that it might could have been done better but overall not a single scene & story line felt unnatural and forced. And since it is reboot it's story line is fixed so, it is bound to go with certain flow but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its perks.
Even the best of the best movies either determined by actual movie or box office success is bound to have certain flaws. That doesn't mean the whole movie is actually bad. In my speculation people are getting swayed by majority's opinion which I think is the reason for disapproval.
I request the viewers to watch this movie with open mind & see it as it is without any preconception.
It’s great entertainment. Is it the greatest movie ever made...no. Will it bore you...no. Will it give you something fun to watch....yes. Better than other Mortal Kombat movies.
Just caught it in the theatre (Thank god cases are going down here in nj)
If you're a true mk fan youll spot the easter eggs, not going to spoil anything but ill say this
A "grounded" version of a story where cybernetic machines and shadow warriors rip each other apart limb by limb and brutally kill each other would sound absurd on paper, somehow this movie pulled it off for me
And lastly folks, it's a bullshit popcorn movie, check your brain at the door and enjoy the old guy shooting lasers out his ass and the aussie criminal shooting eye lasers like superman
Also a certain fatality is AMAZING, you'll know it when you see it
Good for what it is 7/10
The representation of Scorpion and -especially- Sub-Zero is epic. Overall, the fight scenes are great, not perfect, the dialogue is mostly awful and the casting is mostly bad, as is the acting, except Hanzo, Bi-Han and Kano, who are doing a great job. Also, nice art direction. For a fan of the games, it's an enjoyable movie. For all the others, this is a b-movie. Or a Bi-movie :|
If this movie isn’t evidence of the need to turn down CGI in Hollywood, I dunno what is.
For as many things as they got right, they got just as many wrong
Very cheaply made. Terrible acting and story. As usual, trailer is better than the movie.
no idea and no skill
I give it a 6.5 because i expected more of the last fight...
But overall a good movie worth to watch :)
as someone whose experience with fighting games extends only to button mashing on soul calibur on a ps2, i found this pretty charming. it's not going to win any awards, but it's full of gore (a relief after a decade of mcu films honestly) and hits the same way a fun video game does. i wouldn't recommend it for anything other than mindless action, unless you're a fan of the game franchise itself, then i'm sure the plot has some value.
from what i know of mileena though i wanted way more teeth time, god.
Its Dragonball Z - where they change the story up a bit, but it the same old tale.
I am not a hard core fan of MK, but I did enjoy seeing different characters appear in the movie and the story was OK.
Could have been better.
The reason why is because it felt like it was slow at some points, then rushed. Some parts didn't even make sense.
If you already have HBO MAX, then watch it. If not, borrow someones account.
Or pirate it. Either way - it's interesting to watch.
As someone who had little interaction with anything Mortal Kombat before this film I found the film incredibly difficult to follow. There appears to be essentially no story/development. There are plenty of fight scenes, but even these don't really make sense. If you love the franchise you might find the film enjoyable, and get the obvious "Easter egg" revelations, otherwise you'll probably be left entirely confused by just about everything. This is yet another game to movie franchise failure.
Feels like they were trying to tell me too much only to end up telling me nothing, the writing and editing in this was just terrible. Only scene I actually enjoyed was the Scorpion vs Sub-Zero one, probably due to the fact that their faces are hidden most of the time. Acting and dialogue are as cringe as they can get.
The only story I enjoyed and connected to was Scorpion's, because the rest is just lame. The fight scenes are superb though, well choreographed and extremely visual, with lots of blood and all the gore that suits really well with what we expect from Mortal Kombat. They leave two hooks to a second movie which I hope they build better story, but this one was fun to watch and revive some good memories from the old classic Mortal Kombat games and worth watching the fight scenes.
"You were never chosen. Fate has better standards than you."
Mortal Kombat starts off strong and starts to build up a pretty interesting story, until you realize this feels like a sequel to a movie we were supposed to watch. By then it's too late and the movie is over. I found myself getting bored during the second half as it felt flat and I wish they could've focused more on the characters we grew up loving, but it did have some cool fatality scenes I guess.
The real question is: Why is it so difficult to make a great video game movie?
Historically Mortal Kombat movies have failed in two things: have a credible story on screen with relevant characters and plot; and stay true to the video game with aggressive and fast paced battles.
This new movie delivers truly fantastic on screen battles, specially the final one with special moves and dynamics similar to the video game (still below, specially in using the environment in a creative way and having a clear finishing moment). But where he truly goes wrong is on the plot and characters.
For me the biggest mistake is on the new character Cole Young.
Does not make sense to have one when there are so many in the saga. And no, we don’t want him to be the one defeating the bad guys.
Additional some of the key heroes on the game and toned down, like Lio Kam or Sony Blade (kudos to Kano and Jax).
My recommendation is simply grabbing the MK11 campaign plot and use it
Well its "Mortal Kombat", what would you expect from this franchise? It the same main plotline with a dash of backstory for the main character but not interesting enough to make him likable or to cheer for. In a way, I was glad Hiroyuki was cast in this, or else it would be blander. They tried to make it better and I would say it is because I watched the first one. Raiden didn't fell like Raiden, Kano was a little too much...oh well like I said, it is Mortal Kombat
It's too much of the storyline of the video game rushed through. Less on the cutting floor maybe? The action scenes overall were great, but again just too much crammed into short times instead of a couple great scenes with longer fight times. Acting was good overall. The Sonja Blade version with the trailer, blonde, being beaten up by a meathead man? Well, that is the fairytale of trailer parks, isn't it? Good but could've been better.
Great visuals, good action but, average plot. Some scenes were awesome tho, Fatalities and especially the one with Scorpion!
If you've ever played a Mortal Kombat game, you know exactly what to expect here: gore, fighting and fan service. There is enough self-awareness to not take itself too seriously, and for that I was thankful.
Overall, the movie was kinda bad. It has some good easter eggs (tho some of them are nonsense), but also too many cheesy-one liners noding the games (you know, "flawless victory", "fatality", "finish him"), kinda force them into it just to look cool. The acting was meh (except for Sanada, who seems the only one who can actually act); the story was rushed and without too much development. I liked they included some less-known characters like Reiko, Kabal and Nitara. The only cool thing is that the keep their promise on the bloody/gore side, so at least we had that. No more than a 5 over 10
Better than all the others. This was great, a lil bit of fan service and Easter eggs but its a common almost a must nowadays. Nothing felt ridiculous or out of place, this is a great reboot. I hope the next installments just get better.
As an old old fan of the game,i did enjoy this movie, the special effects especially the fatalities..also it has a lot of characters from the game which is a delight for the fans to see
Campy acting and cheesy dialogue, but it's damned entertaining with the action and when the main theme song kicks in you just can't help but get hyped up
Dumb fun. You can tell how the cast and crew are fans of the property. This is also targeted at fans, since they don't really try to explain things. This definitely requires you to check the game wiki (or to have played a ton) to understand what's going on.
I am a HUUUUUUUGGGEE MORTAL KOMBAT fan and I have never thought they have done a good film (except Scorpions Revenge), but this film is so close to being the perfect Mortal Kombat film but a few things let it down.
So let's start with the good, I actually think all of the castings is perfect as I felt everyone embodied their characters perfectly with the standouts being Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Mehcad Brooks (Jax) and the best being Josh Lawson (Kano) who just plays Kano in such a way that he makes he almost makes scenes that can be generic even better with his great one-liners and great comedic but scum bag timing. Also, you can see the passion for the franchise from the cast and crew because they nail references and also many different things like fatalities which feel sooooo good when it happens.
Now here is where I say the negative, whoever edited this film needs to be supervised better because some of the scenes are edited so poorly but especially the fight scenes which you can see they shot the actions but they use quick cuts which ruin some of the fights in the film. Also, though Lewis Tan (Cole Young) grew on me I feel like it would have been easier to use a character from the franchise already though he wasn't bad in the film just a little bit generic and they spend too much time on him and not enough on the other characters like Scorpion who you would think according to the trailer he would be in it more.
Anyway, if you are a Mortal Kombat fan I feel like you will enjoy it and I give it a 7/10 because they have shown they care about the fans but as a film, it isn't great and I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't a Mortal Kombat fan.
mmmmm, it can't compare with the original, no the outdaded 1995 movie is 10x better than this remake.
1995 movie was way better
Don't listen to these negative comments, movie is great, excellent performance by actors, just watch it. WTF, people watch then let negative comments so other people don't want to watch it, if you want to have your own opinion about it, Watch it and come back and thanks me later.
No real plot, no real character development, no good music (so incredibly disappointing given the original's amazing soundtrack).
For a movie based on a tournament game, they failed to actually do a tournament. They talk about the tournament but they never have it. Perhaps they intend that to be in a sequel?
While I am all for a good reimagining, this was not that.
This "movie" or whatever this is, is just an offense to the Mortal Kombat videogame history.
There is no proper story oh wait.. It is mortal kombat. The characters were all a bit to kind/soft. Especially Cole could have been much harder and tougher.
The combat was also soft and filmed in a bad way. Hanzo started off pretty good but after that it never gets better. The first 10 minutes are probably the movies best minutes.
Terrible, turned it off after 20 minutes.
The trouble with this version of Mortal Kombat is that it feels like a setup for something greater. It feels like there's no proper story, because it's only the beginning of one. The acting is also...not all that great. I do, however, like the fights, and for once, they didn't try to make it kid friendly. I actually enjoyed it enough to give it a passing grade, but only barely.
If you like the games, Mortal Kombat will probably entertain you, and most likely make you wanting more. However, if you are not familiar with the games, this will more than likely just seem weird.
Worst movie of the year.
The action is good and the special effects are fine. However, only Mortal Kombat diehards will understand the storyline as there is little here to fill new fans in on the game’s backstories. I only have limited experience with the game itself and as such felt a little lost. This undermined my experience and my perception of the film.
What is there to say. Didn’t expect much and was neither disappointed nor amazed. I expect nostalgia for the games is the only thing that makes people watch this.
I enjoyed This movie. Well worth a watch. some good action and kept me entertained.
decent, decent, but where the f*** was the "mortal kombat" in this movie.
Uhmmm what the heck was that? Since Hollywood is so horrible at making good movies anymore; they could have easily reproduced the original Mortal Kobat in 4K and I would have been happy with it. This movie is so terrible that if it was food you wouldn't feed it to a pig.
The real question here is what did you all expect? lol.
I'm a big fan of MK, but how many times are we going to see the same story again and again. Is there really nothing else to write? So many characters and we are watching the same story for 30 years. I'm not even gonna talk about how bad it was.
If it were just the fight scenes it might be a 7. But the dialogue and acting are abysmal.
Cheap garbage Chinese targeted nonsense. Cole Young is the most pathetic main character I've seen in a long time.
The fight scenes were great!
I know nothing about the Mortal Kombat realm but the fight scenes alone were worth the viewing, although I could have done without the excessive blood.
"GET OVER HERE!"
Best part? Kung Lao's fatality! Freaking used to slice people up a lot with his neaty little hat!
Anyway I loved the R-rating, loved Scorpion, loved the tried to fight like the characters I remember and I think I would watch the sequel if they incorporate more characters from the games.
But other then that, a new main guy? Didn't work for me at all. Wish we had more fatalities, a better Reptile, Sub-Zero's best fatality was left out, maybe the second Sub-Zero will do it in a sequel whilst also having the original back as Noob Saibot?
I also felt the movie was bit too long. 90 minutes would have been great. Nobody felt into a pit with spikes, no real tournament, Goro was beaten to easily and the fights could've looked better.
But still, never thought in my life I would see a rated-R Mortal Kombat movie in 2021. Hopefully we'll get a better sequel.
Any storyline in the games is 1000 times better than this movie. Easter eggs pushed down our throat, flawless victory ? Fatality ? nothing natural! The main character is a joke, bad scenarios throughout all the movie. Poor prince goro, fight in a barn , really? The only thing that trys to hold the movie together is mister Sub-zero and Scorpion. Raiden is a joke but the monks at the temple are to be congratulated for rebuilding jax's arms in the middle of nowere and no tech at all, lol real magicians.Idk I can't defend this movie...total disappointment.
with warner it's always "hope for the best and prepaer for the worst". Well... this wasn't the best, that's for sure. But, I guess it wasnt the worst either.
Started strong, faded a bit and the final fight wasn't what I expected, you're left hopeful for a good squeal though.
Nice trailer, where's the movie?
why sub-zero always leave his opponents alive? fr. and hasashi hanzo whatever attacks from back and two on one bhahahahaa...
I'm supprised that this movie with no real story would be made with what seems to be an ok budget, based on the cgi. I'm not hopeful for the future of game movies based on this. Really suppriced they accepted such a week story. Guess they where ok with just the characters and their fights. Ohh well guess we all have different taste.
The animation movie, scorpion's revenge was way better, let's hope next ones will live up to our expectations.
Movie badly needs to be rescored, the music is atrocious. There's also too many things like "flawless victory", "fatality", and such to the point that it feels super forced. If they wanted to include that stuff they should have just had a tournament. The movie itself is pretty meh. Cole Young is pretty unlikable with a stupid power and there's a huge focus on him. They should have just used another established character or given him a not completely lame power, like make him Cyrax or something. Josh Lawson as Kano was one of the most entertaining parts of the movie and kind a great Kano with what he was given to work with, though they did make him pretty pathetic - not Josh Lawson's fault though. 5/10 for me but probably not something I'd ever bother rewatching. The original two films weren't great either to be fair. I am glad they're making more MK stuff though, I love the franchise. Wish they would've at least brought in Christopher Lambert to reprise his role as Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who IS Shang Tsung in my eyes.
Honestly wasn’t an excellent film of spectacle, but that’s okay. It could of been a better start off, but it wasn’t a bad one. Think of this film to be the Thor 2 to Thor 3; hoping and or assuming that the MK sequel is as good as Thor 3...
Summary: Not great, but definitely watchable, especially if the sequel turns out to be even better.
I grew up with the original movie and playing the game for the Sega Genesis. But this was such a forgettable movie. Lots of dumb but few fun to be had.
Liu Kang said he has gather the champion even most of em find the temple by themself..Raiden not even helpful,,i guess Kung Lao and Scorpion cast save this movie...poorly narrated movie
awesome movie . If your a fan of the games and love action. this movie is wonderful i really enjoyed it
very entertaining, was a good build up to branch from the game. Good character & casting selection to start.
If your a Mortal Kombat fan or not this movir is for you.
Great directing, Acting, Script, Story... etc.
Go watch it and believe me if your gonna rewind some fighting scenes.
Feels more like a wannabe superhero origin movie. For Cole Young, who isn’t even in the games. They probably should have just had the tournament.
Rather than being about a prequel to the tournament. With most of the baddies who would be in the tournament killed off already.
It’s not a movie.
It’s just another bland, soulless mass product that’s primarily aimed at the Chinese market.
Now that WB is the only real studio releasing big movies, it really shows what a joke of a studio they’ve become during the last 5 years.
Not that they didn’t release crap before that, but at least there was something like a good Mad Max, Harry Potter, Matrix or Lord of the Rings film somewhere to be found in their slate.
It would seem Villeneuve and Nolan are the only real talents that are left at the studio.
For nearly every other film they make, they seem to think that appealing to the lowest common denominator will give them the biggest return on their investment.
I.e. the action scenes are more important than the story or the characters, and the scale needs to be huge, even if it looks tacky and fake.
3/10
That trailer released today has me so intrigued. I'm actually looking forward to this one.
https://twitter.com/MKMovie/status/1362432505236783105?s=20
I liked it, it gave me what I expected, great start and finish
This movie was good, I watched it a few times it's just with it being mortal Kombat I think a lot of us expected more gore and fight scenes, but one thing I will tell you this movie did get right; getting right to the action, It does not have long drawn out full of conversation type of films, the action talks more than the people character. Again it was alright but I just expected more.
I LOVED it!!!!
Granted I have never played a Mortal Kombat game in my life so I didn’t recognize all the Mortal Kombat inaccuracies but it was a great non stop action fest
9/10
Boring movie, not interesting movie.
Wow, given what they had done before, this is a pleasant surprise. It's actually quite good.
Tournaments do not make for good movies, but the MK franchise has such colourful characters, with great back stories, and it can be used to make something good.
The others looked cheap, this time, it is amazing. They put the money, not only for the SFX that are quite good, but everything else too. The image in general, the decors, everything looks great.
The intro scene alone is incredibly good. Got to say the whole movie does not live up to it, but it's not a discredit to the rest, it's just that it is that good.
The fights are fun and well done, good choreography, reusing moves of the game, and not too much shitty camera moves that are so common these days, so you actually can see the fight.
Pretty cool use of fatalities too, recognizable from the game.
It's just a bit sad that we don't see more characters.
Scenario is pretty basic, but enough to make something around the tournament story, so it does the job.
As for characters, Sonya, as the one not chosen, but doing all the work, is probably the only really developed character and is quite good. But Kano, even if he's all about a gimmick (cynic, ironic asshole) more than a really built character, is just awesome, clearly a league above the rest. Cole is clearly disappointing, his growth arc is a bit underwhelming. The rest, well, they do the job but barely exist as characters.
For instance Cole is supposedly very worried about his family. But he follows Sonya to who the hell knows where, and get into a secret temple to train, for... weeks ? while abandoning them in a motel without warning. What the actual fuck ? Also, no protection for them, even when they know that Sub Zero WILL be hunting his bloodline.
Another annoying thing, looks like Raiden can just teleport anyone anywhere. So why didn't he just teleport his champions to safety when needed, or even teleport the bad guys far away before they do any damage ?
Despite saying that going around the tournament was a good idea, the ending is a bit weird. The whole point is that Shang Tsung wants to kill Earth champion before the tournament begins, to get an easy win. And it seems it supposed to be less than a month away. So.. with his champions dead, wouldn't the Tournament still take place and Earth wins ?
Well, this was "interesting". I had (almost) no idea what to expect so this was somewhat of a surprise. I didn't even notice that it was rated R/18 so the graphic scenes were a surprise as well :o :D (I only realized that it must be rated R when that flying creature/woman got sawed into half...)
Anyway, I really liked the fighting scenes (although some of them might've been a little bit too graphic for my taste) - the choreography is impressive! The setting is also interesting but I didn't really feel the story/emotions. It was quite cool at times but ultimately I cared too little about the characters.
I like the name "order of light".
Some of the more memorable lines:
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Mortal Kombat’:
I kept waiting for a tournament to happen.
The score was relentless and cheesy. I felt like it tried reeeally hard to compensate for a story that didn’t feel remotely epic or grand. It made me miss the 1995 film.
I wasn’t a fan of the casting. There was a missed opportunity to bring some really iconic and dynamic characters to life. And I don’t think these actors fit the bill to accomplish that mission. The script didn’t help either.
Obvious fanservice operations for fans only, but I have to admit that I enjoyed it despite my “sub-zero” expectations (hahaha). I hardly doubt anyone older than 16 will get into the franchise just by watching this film alone, though. It might not be 100% faithful to its source material, but the atmosphere of the videogame is there. The only problem is that it suffers from the “porn with too much plot” syndrome: despite no one being in the theaters for the cheesy dialogues, the wooden acting, or the mediocre cinematography, we are forced to bear with overlong chitchat and never-ending training sequences in preparation of the tournament. It would be acceptable if the tournament was actually in the movie, but in the end, the film ends up being feeling just like a prequel to a series of sequels.
Finally, a good Mortal Kombat film! Now we just need a good Street Fighter as well.
A video game movie that might not seem like a success to everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the action scenes if not for the fatalities themselves. While the story is weak at times, this just makes me excited for the actual tournament and the fights that will happen.
LOVE IT !! I don't know why they don't put on mk actors of renown like idk, Chris Pratt as Johnny Cage, Margot Robbie as Sonya Blade, Angelina Jolie as Sindel something like that ! it would be AMAZING !!!
Hate the games but love the storyline of the franchise. So would of given it a 10. But it felt more like a teenage comic movie like superman/Spiderman/batman/anything man than the epic story I fell in love with. Mortal Kombat legacy is better with a lot smaller budget.
The first 10 minutes were good.
" F A T A L I T Y "
I saw the movie and then it was over.
What happened? I don't know...
It was yellow, then blue, it crashed loudly, many screamed and then there was a lot of writing in the credits. No, joking aside...
When I used to see Mortal Kombat on TV as a little boy, I never understood it. Such a crazy story, but that's probably exactly what makes up the Mortal Kombat universe.
In any case, it never really caught me. After all these years, however, I really liked the games. So I hoped that the film would now appeal to me more. But as someone else has already written, it feels more like a huge trailer for the next part. After all, I got a little insight into the story of some characters and Sub-Zero is the coolest anyway.
7.5/10
I loved that beginning, great to see it's for the adults definitely the best decision for this movies reboot. Never been a massive Mortal Kombat fan not since the 90's but I did enjoy this movie for the fight scenes which were bloody and cool and the special effects were awesome, really good actually. Those who are on with the games to the present will no the story and the new characters and back stories where they meant nothing to me but even so it did not stop me enjoying a interesting lets fight movie.
I did miss a little of the dance tecno beat kicking in on every fight from the originals but that's just me.
But I really enjoyed the serous more grown up this version was so I was prepared to forget the dance tracks in support of the blood and brutal nature of the kills. They even got all the sayings from the game in their that I absolutely loved, it helped me enjoy this movie even more. Yes it did not try to hide the fact that this is a setup movie for number 2 that is in production now with the returning cast, I'm not overly fond of the setup approach but it is what it is and this was entertaining enough and certainly wasn't boring but I do expect much much more from number 2 and a bigger Payout which will definitely help this movie being a Setup.
If you're a fan of the game, or If you too young to legally play the game and watch this R rated movie you'll probably like this.
For me it's just poor. There's no story, the "history" is terrible, the action isn't great, but the worst thing about it is that there'll most definitely be a sequel.
I just watched the movie a few days ago and I don't remember a single thing about it, not even the fatalities.
As someone who parachuted in (not a Mortal Kombat gamer, haven’t seen the other films) there wasn’t much to take from this. I see it may have some fan appeal but it lacked a good storyline, fights were nothing special and no depth to any of the characters, so no heart. I rate this film a 5 (meh) out of 10. [Action Game Concept]
Truly bad, felt very rushed in the end. Disappointed as I was looking forward to watching this updated version. Almost as bad as Streetfighter was back in the day
Trying to build a story around some video games is an almost impossible mission. The director comes from advertising related to video games, and understands that the movie should offer fights wrapped in gore. But there is an evident lack of trust of the company in the film, turned into a series B in disguise. The fighting is surrounded by laziness, wanting to finish as soon as possible to move on to the next one.
it wasn't pretty. There were no movements and quick actions that I expected. The scorpion was mediocre, coming from the past and fighting with its last generation. there were a lot of deaths but less stories. How can gora die by a beginner. I think they dont play the game.
Much better than it’s commercialised forebears but still not as good as some of the other video game genre movies available
Extremely cheesy and full of fan service. Exactly how it should be. Bad in all the right ways.
It was worse than I expected, and I expected it bad obviously. A short playback time, so many sudden jump scenes, some illogical dialogues and bad manuscript, bad character chosen for every fighter. You can watch it but can't feel it!!
Only best thing I found was Hiroyuki Sanada's acting and fighting sequence. On the contrary Sub Zero character was also pretty good.
That Techno Syndrome theme in post credit visuals was impressive too.
Lui Kang's bicycle kick scene was so awful, it was comical. I literally spit my water out when I saw it. I mean, it's a mortal kombat movie... So if you watched it expecting a well acted action drama I don't think your expectations were in the right place. This definitely catered to the fanboi's of the franchise and played up to the games catch phrases, which kind of cheapened it imo. The cgi was mid to lower end, but most of it was OK.
Bottom line, it was an entertaining movie for what it was... A mortal kombat fanboi movie.
Exactly what I expected. Those that expected more were not paying attention. It's just another martial arts/sci-fi mashup. As that, it was okay. I have no knowledge of the game beyond the earlier movie incarnation, so I have no investments in the characters. I'm sure that colors my view. If I actually cared...I may have hated it.
Watchable in a way, but they fucked up the script completely. Name of the movie is Mortal Kombat, which is based on the game of the same name, but where the fuck is Mortal Kombat tournament in the movie?
Dumb fun! Definitely for fans of the video game.
Entertaining for long-time fans and for those who’ve only played the latest in the series.
The first 15 minutes: A pretty great beginning. Sub-Zero and Scorpion fight each other even before they get their world-famous suits and names. Here ingeniously captured fight scenes meet feelings.
Then more fighters join in. Well-known names like Jax or Sonya Blade, but also the newcomer Cole Young, who may not quite fit into the overall picture, even if the succinct storyline urges exactly that.
This kind of prequel to supposedly upcoming sequels is a visually brilliant start. One is strongly oriented towards the video games of the current generation. Be it the brutality, the familiar fighting moves or a final "Fatality".
Still: It doesn't work that completely without an aftertaste. Again and again I felt reminded of the less good, but damn cult Mortal Kombat from 1995. Somehow, a touch more seriousness was missing for me. Various jokes in the film, for which above all Kano deserves a medal of shame, seem somehow inappropriate. I would have liked that one would have stayed on the very hard path without much fun. This way, however, one drives on two tracks, which doesn't always work.
Despite the small but appropriate criticism, I really liked the film. There are numerous scenes worth remembering. I think they did a lot right here. A successor will certainly go one better.
