Critique put me off watching this for a while, dumbest decision I've ever made.
This film was great, plain and simple. It's dark and full of action. The flashbacks are a nice change for introducing the origin story. And I thought they cast Superman perfectly, great actor and is practically the spitting image of Christopher Reeve.
Best adaptation of the Superman story since the originals, loved it.
I give up on super hero movies without Christian Bale as the hero
Quote: "Such a disappointment. I was actually considering leaving the movie theater."
Agree...
I give it a 6 but I'm tempted to lower it to a 3 if I took in account that this is the a Superman story. The old Superman movies are totally unlike this one. Yes it's a darker Superman movie. So this movie will be a disappointment watching it with that expectation in your mind.
But then again... Why do I grade this watch once (longing for the credits to appear) a 6?
It made me realize that people like to watch movies about devastating destruction and annihilation of total civilisation instead of the A-team like screenplay where not even the bad guys got hurt. There was always a camera shot to make sure that every kid saw that the bad guy thrown of a building by B.A. Baracus softly landed in a garbage bin.
Dirty, dizzy BUT ALIVE !!!
Yep, humans are fasinated by their own descruction.
So back to the movie:
Take a know story. Introduce some special effects and a lot of violence. Make money and stain the superman idol for every kid in the future !!!
Like Obama for saying "YES you can" this film maker should be prosecuted. So I guess I should give it a 3, but the special effects were good.
My advice don't watch it. For obvious reasons.
This is how a superman movie should be. Thank god no luther, no bullshit kryptonian island. A fight between kryptonians will result in mass destruction and high casualties. Zack snyder did everything right. Hopefully this will result in a great superman trilogy.
I am 97% sure Michael Shannon really is from a dying Krypton
I watched this again and continue to be impressed by the all-out action. The fights featured here are how I think a comic book come to life would be. I'm upping this to 4 out of 5 for the hyper kinetic action.
Honestly I thought it was a little disappointing. I the actor for superman was perfect but the actress for Lois looked nothing like she does in all the other adaptations, and not in a good way. How hard can it be to find someone that does? It's a big pet peeve of mine.
The romance felt forced and while the acting was great some scenes/choices were stupid ("a giant supernatural fight is happening and everything is being destroyed? Lets just sit there and watch!")
A complete waste of time.
If you are a comics fan, and for some reason you still haven't seen this one, save a few hours of your life and pick another movie.
In the other hand if you are not a comic fan, but still want to see a nice superhero movie, check out the ones made by Christopher Reeve almost 40 years ago, you wont be disappointed with those.
This movie has an impressive cast, that's the only reason why I seen it completely, I think for respect of them, but i was so close to stop watching it, and be the first one in my life i did not finish, that's how bad it is.
The options were endless for a superman movie, and even more considering this is supposed to be a dark superman, for me he is more like a reckless one, but they decided to put a ton of super mega FX, which are not convincing at all, and have two semi-gods destroying JUST one city while battling with their superpowers and dont have an scratch in their faces or they immaculate customs.
Lois Lane appears in every single moment with the correct answer or with a brilliant idea of how to stop the bad guys or to be requested in the presence of the powerful entities that came to conquer the world and exterminate the human race to create a new Kripton, but yeah, she needs to be there.
I cannot continue the critiques because I would need to start spoiling the movie and that's something I dont like to do, but i did advice it on the beginning of my review, if you still decide to see this awful movie is on your own mental health risk.
I really hope that Superman vs Batman: Dawn of Justice is not as bad as this one is.
A perfect Superman Start! Plus, Zimmer on the score, adds a cherry to the cake!
I am totally suprised. In the end it is a good movie - with some boring parts.
the best superman by now with a great superman actor and russell crowe - also fighting around the world ;)
8/10
I can appreciate the need to refresh Superman's brand, honestly. The character has been stuck in the '50s since, well, the '50s and the world's gone through a few cultural shifts in that time so an update is overdue. His core principles remain essential, though, and in visiting such dark territory, Zack Snyder's iteration completely whiffs on that.
There's a complete lack of joy, or even optimism, in this grim, sepia-swathed world, least of all in its noble hero. Saddled with guilt by his adoptive father, who adamantly stresses (even to his dying breath) the dangers of revealing his powers to the public, Superman seems defeated even before he takes flight. His biological dad, visited briefly in holographic form, merely points him like a weapon at the bad guys and evaporates. His relationship with Lois Lane is happenstance and hollow, more rendezvous than relationship, with a lack of mystery and next-to-no emotion. It's a drain to watch, a dysfunctional mess just to think about.
The film is technically impressive, though, with a strong talent for emphasizing the magnitude in both the scenery and the inevitable superhuman brawls. I enjoyed the imagination on display during its brief Kryptonian prologue, too, and would welcome a little further exploration on that front, minus the austere gravitas of its impending demise. So the effects work is top-notch, if occasionally shaded by the nagging indulgences that continue to plague CG sporgasbords. Sadly, that's one well it visits too often, and by the climactic closing battle my eyes had glossed over.
Troublesome and messy, this is a grand mismatch. Superman isn't just Batman with heat vision; he's a symbol of hope, of the power of positive thought. A counterpoint to Bruce Wayne's cold, isolated self-reliance. Lacking those nuances, the character is nothing more than a hammer with a red cape. Smotheringly bleak and stressful, I feel like I suffered mild PTSD from this experience.
The movie has a few problems of focus and charisma of some characters such as the poor vilain General Zod and it's motivations, so as the sideckick Faora. But the rise of Superman in this movie is Amazing, such as Snyder's vision of the Man of Steel, the fall of Krypton along with Kal-El's parents and the creation of the Kent family is well done, the young Clark Kent lost among his gift is well-constructed until it's grown.
If you're expecting a homage to Superman's Christopher Reeve, then go watch Superman Returns (2006) because this movie is different from every Superman movie ever done, darker and more serious. The main cast does a great job, Henry Cavill is THE Superman, you can feel it's charisma in it, Amy Adams as Lois Lane is definitely the best version of the character, Russel Crowe as Jor-El is good and so as Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent, Michael Shannon was one of the biggest problems of the film, the acting seems too forced, the menace of General Zod is not believable, is laughable, the reasons of the vilain are not convincing, it's dull such as Terence Stamp portrayal back in Superman I and II.
Now technically the movie is visually striking, full of fights and destruction, the effects of Superman flying is incredible, it's beautiful. It is the first Superman movie without the classic Superman's Theme by John Williams, but Hans Zimmer does a great job on creating a theme to a new man of steel atmosphere. Expecting a sequel. 7/10
Such a disappointment. I was actually considering leaving the movie theater.
Awesome
The least they could do is have Lois Lane be brunette! Seriously! It was pretty hard to get past considering...otherwise, why not have Superman be a Ken doll? The story was somewhat hard to follow and it's confusing as to why you'd take a part of history and instead of expanding on the story, pick parts of the foundation of that story and bend them to mimic a lie. I was disappointed to say the least. I guess the acting was as fine as it could be. Likely because the easiest things to follow were ignored, the things we knew about the story to begin with? Maybe.
My second viewing of "Man of Steel" was better than my first. The action scenes are mammoth and I was awed by just how much was happening. I'd forgotten just how intense the battles are, not just in Metropolis, but in Smallville as well. I also continually thought about how many innocent people must have died as skyscrapers crumbled. It's not an easy thing to get past and I can't say that I wouldn't have appreciated the execution of the "evacuate the city" trope before everything was toppled. I think back to the impact of the city destruction scene in "Independence Day". I didn't even think about the people being killed in that explosion and I contribute that to seeing it before 9/11. Comparatively, it's a larger scale disaster than in "Man of Steel" . The rejection of the Metropolis destruction then, has to stem from much of it being caused (though inadvertently) by Superman.
Yes, I still have trouble with how powerful Superman is. But it's a flaw of the comic book character and not something that developed in this movie. Because he is so powerful, he's aloof and he's portrayed that way in "Man of Steel". It's a wise choice that doesn't turn this movie into another deep character study or a soap opera. The Superman character is too massive for that.
It's time to make a concerted effort not to say the same things as everyone else has about "Man Of Steel". Although the movie was mostly enjoyable, it's strange that my favorite parts of it were small character moments played by a very strong cast.
I went in expecting some colossal fights that would be grand in scale and they were delivered. The CGI was amazing, but there was just so much of it. I never thought I'd clamor for fewer action scenes, but "Man Of Steel" could have done with fewer explosions. There were some stunning effects, not to mention plenty of skyscrapers falling (which aren't getting any easier to watch twelve years removed from 9/11).
The fighting between Superman, General Zod and his crew was often intense and exhausting. I really liked the "weight" and impact that the fights carried. The scale of the battles were huge at times but things were happening so fast and at such volumes that it was often hard to determine just what was going on. The scenes that featured the terra-formers and the gravity effects that they had on surrounding buildings, cars, people, etc. was very original. Snyder's visuals were, as usual, amazing.
There were some blatant attempts using some ham-fisted imagery to equate Superman as savior of the world to Jesus himself. In fact, Snyder went so far as to have Clark/Kal-El visit a church to get advice from a Pastor. As Kal-El is talking with him, a stained glass window featuring Jesus is framed over Kal-El's shoulder. If it's an attempt to be clever, it wasn't. Jesus delivered the promise of eternal life while Superman is just hoping he can help us all get along with each other and save the occasional persons in peril. I don't see the parallels.
Another problem with Superman is he's so powerful there's never any threat he can be stopped. I guess others could die while his ability to rescue them is slowed, but that never translates to a feeling of danger. This problem isn't exclusive to this movie. Superman's indestructibility has always been a problem with the character. I mean, why do you need Batman in the Justice League? To stop petty theft? Just have Superman spin the Earth backwards every time we have a problem. But enough with my picking of nits.
Overall, "Man Of Steel" was about as good as I expected. It offered too much of a good thing with its mind-blowing action sets, but was well acted and a treat to look at.
Man, I can't believe whether this film is good or not is controversial. I'm especially saddened by how many people found his father's death as stupid. It hit me deep. People are fucking flawed aren't they? Can't people be torn between two choices and freeze? Is that not human? Never had an important choice in your life where you didn't know what the right decision was? Clark was supposed to be young and inexperienced at the time too. Couldn't even fly yet. Anyway, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit and I hope others do too.
Snyder and Nolan together on the best superman movie ever made. Drama, action, a unique visual style brings the cape heroe to a new level. Watching this in 2021 1 week before the Snyder cut of the justice league, this movie is even better. I just regret that the daily planet ending was not the course it followed afterwards
This was an excellent movie. I'm not quite certain why it took me so long to see it...The effects were amazing and Henry Cavill did justice to the character.
One of the best CBM ever. Don't expect to see goofy and lame jokes in between, it's just a total realistic plus action packed movie with a dark tone. Clear up all your perspective u had abt supes and watch this movie you will definitely like it. Background score is phenomenal !. The inaugural flight scene is epic.
I loved Superman but after watching this I totally became a huge die hard fan of Superman !.
And I am pretty sure those who can't bare the complicated narration in this are those who felt inception as a boring movie, no use of arguing with those !.
10/10
If you have had watched Zack's movie you may prolly know he is a person who plays with visual and yes, this movie has gotten some amazing crazy visuals that are soo good and indeed realistic than every other supes movies !. And DK triology team teaming up again is a sort of icing on cake . It's not a perfect movie, it has a lot of flaws but more over that you can see something different something that ain't played out in this movie and that is one of the factors I liked abt this movie. But the usual disguise of supes with glasses dissapointed me as they literally changed the way of movie I expected a change in that too!.
All over without thinking twice grab your popcorn and watch the movie !
This movie is just a really big joke.
We need to sue the screenwriter if they hired one , this movie is just a patchwork of incoherence scenes surronded by action.
I give him a 3 it's just because I laugh a lot even if it's wasn't the goal.
By the way i'm totally agree with @gayuuud
It's like a Michael Bay movie. No Story, boring af and everything is broken at the end .
Super!
One of my all time favourite films. Never understood the hate train.
As a big Superman fan, for me it represented a fantastic telling of his story. Cavill absolutely crushes the role. The music and cinematography are on point. The Lois/Clark dynamic is perfectly balanced. Everything is spot on.
No matter how many times I watch it, the dialogue has the same gravitas and I'm still brought to tears during the hurricane. That moment when Jonathan holds up his hand and the music stops. So powerful.
the problem wasn't in the cast it was on the boring storyline, i watched it till the end just cause i love comics movies and tv shows, DC has a thing or two to learn from MARVEL.
Pros:
- I always thought it was an odd call to make a Superman film this grim. You’re kinda writing yourself into a corner, as it means the film now has to work on a dramatic level instead of just a comedic/entertainment level, which is hard for a character like Superman. However, I’m also of the opinion that you should give filmmakers the creative leeway in order to put their spin on the material. Thankfully, the central conflict of the plot (which is represented by Superman’s dads) is actually very well done, and it makes the film stand out from other superhero films, while still capturing the essence of Superman.
- I like how they push the character of Superman and test his ideals. If you’re going to put Superman in a more realistic world, it makes sense that he faces situations where he has no choice but to kill someone. To me, that doesn’t break the character, it actually makes him more interesting. The movie walks a fine line in that regard. I know that it makes the film inaccessible for some people. And I certainly get the issue people have with it, as I have the same problem with Batman v Superman. The difference is that I feel like Man of Steel still understands what its central character represents, despite pushing him to the limit.
- The action is great, even though the scene with the tentacles should’ve been removed.
- The acting is overall solid. Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon do most of the heavy lifting. Henry Cavill and Amy Adams are okay.
- The characters are pretty well developed. Zod is one of the most underrated villains in comic book films.
- Some little moments in it are just awesome (first flight, Jor-El and Lois on the ship).
Cons:
- Visually ugly. There are some beautiful moments in it, but the colour grading (which almost looks like a bunch of Instagram filters) overall just isn’t pleasing to the eye. There’s also a little too much handheld in it. If you want to make a more realistic film, I don’t understand why the choice was made to go with this stylized/green screen look.
- The direction is kinda overblown, and there’s way too much destruction porn in the third act.
- There’s a lack of narrative flow in the first act. I don’t know if it’s the editing or the writing, but it’s a bit choppy.
- It’s quite obvious that they wanted to give Lois a big and proactive role, but that they didn’t exactly know how to integrate her into the plot.
6/10
10th time watching and it has grow on me in a way that keeps fascinating endlessly. It's really an incredible mature superhero movie.
glad this Superman movie has not these stereotypes:
Clark works for a newspaper and loves his co-worker
Luther
North pole
and so
this was good
this is THE MOVIE!, absolute delightful to watch and best Superman movie all time.
Exceptional cgi maybe the best i have ever seen in action movies, awesome fights between superhumans,a moving origin story...A true superhero movie!!!
This is the best of the superman film, up to now lets hope the next one is even better.
This and the dark knight films are the way to go, keep it up.
The movie was boring I'd rather sit through 10 seasons of Smallville with Tom Welling as Clark Kent, than watching this. And there is a huge similarity between Henry and Tom. The movie was a bit disappointing, but tolerable to the point of me just sticking around for the special effects. That's it.
Reading: 3.5/10
Gray, buro and gloomy. A lot of chaos in the narrative and longueur. Sometimes tired and bored.
The Jonathan Kent death scene is so bad it makes me angry.
I'll allow the effects are good (albeit distinctly Transformers-y in aesthetic) but I'm over stuff that tries to be ~deep by having characters declaim themes that should come through organically instead. Like shit, this is a visual medium!
Do directors think audiences lack any kind of critical thinking skills/media literacy? Do they?
A Superman movie, made by a guy who doesn't like Superman. What could go wrong.
Fight scenes are cool tho, and Zod. Hans Zimmer cooked. And Henry Cavill was the perfect choice for Superman (even though Zack Snyder somehow manages to completely waste him, which is understandable because he doesn't like and understand Superman.)
I watched Man of Steel and Wonder Woman the same night. It confirmed my rating for Wonder Woman because Man of Steel is slightly better... plus, it features Amy Adams.
This movie is pretty good! It’s well-written, the CGI holds up, the acting is great, and I love how important it is to this universe. 8/10 :star:
Watched this in 4K HDR today. It’s stunning. Henry Cavill is the best Superman when Zack Snyder directs the movie. :ok_hand_tone3:
So I watched this already years ago, but I needed the refresher. There are good and bad aspects here but overall, I like the movie. I think what applies here, is that they put too much stuff into one movie.
It’s certainly a darker tone on Superman, I found it interesting how it tried a bit more realistic angle in terms of how the world would react to aliens, also in terms of the military. It also shows that he can’t save everyone. He can’t make miracles.
However, it also addresses him being a symbol of hope, an ideal. I like how he still needed to find out what he wants to do, or what he should do. I think Jonathan and Martha Kent were also well handled, and there was a discussion regarding what he should do with his powers.
I believe while the tone is dark, as a character he’s still hopeful, and a beacon for humans to look up to. I think that was handled well enough, but in my opinion, each theme this movie briefly addressed could’ve been explored more. Hell, Krypton in itself could’ve been explored more. They dumped so much into this movie, and I think it would’ve been better to save Zod and Krypton for a second movie, and focus in the first one solely on him discovering himself and his purpose.
Many reviews say the beginning is choppy, they’re not wrong. It’s not awful but the flow of the storytelling is a bit disrupted due to the arrangement of the scenes, probably also due to having so much content in one movie.
Visually I would also nitpick (it does look good) that a more colorful color grading would’ve been better. I’m familiar with Snyder’s color preferences, but I think he’s limiting himself by saturating his works so much. Because this movie is not dystopian, or tragic. It’s a story about hope, and I think the visuals could’ve reflected it more. There are also some plot issues I have, but they are mostly negligible.
The action was too much, too. At some point, I couldn’t appreciate it as I was already drained from all the fighting. I think it didn’t need that much action - Sometimes less is more.
That’s about it. I have issues, but I do think it’s a fine movie.
6.5/10
As a comic fan, I think it's pretty overrated. Henry Cavill IS Superman, though.
I think Cavill is perfect but for another 'superman' whose power is to put people to sleep. He would face Lee Pace, who as the villain would also have the power to put people to sleep.
In their battle of the ages the loser would simply fall asleep just like the audience.
What can I say about this movie... it is visually very beautiful, although it has some scenes with this "videogame aesthetic" that Snyder really likes (and bother me a little bit), he also brings a good origin of Superman, but I can say the same of the development.
I think the biggest problem of this movie is supporting in script facilities and ultra sensationalism that generates some nonsense situations (Why didn't they let Zod die on Krypton, once he was a prisoner? Why did Lois kiss Superman in the midst of chaos? How can Zod control so well his powers? etc.). Besides, I wanted that Clark Kent's drama was better explored, this absence makes Superman just look an insubordinate big guy that fights for humans for I don't know what. And the last event of the movie should have generated more impact that it actually generated.
It's ok but Costner has to had very tough life as a 46 year-old to look like this and Clark as a journalist still looks like a wrestler (Reeve pretended to look like a journalist better). ;)
"People are afraid of what they don't understand."
When the trailer came out for this, I was so stoked. Hans Zimmer's score gave me chills and I couldn't wait (still one of my favorite soundtracks). I also remember leaving theaters a little shocked at how different it was and thinking I didn't love it. Never thought it was bad, just not great. Years later after all the other DCEU movies that came out, this is my favorite one by far. It has grown on me. Cavill looks good with the suit on, and I can see what Snyder was aiming for.
I think the story could be more well rearranged and compelling - I didn't quite like how they tell both Clark's adult and childhood story at the same time - but for me it did a good job for the most part. I mean, at least it was very entertaining. No wonder why people say it is the best Superman movie made so far. Henry Cavill is the perfect man for this character. He sure could be more well used, but he also did a good job.
5/10, tried rewatching this recently but it’s just too boring, I’d rather watch all of the cw dc shows than finish watching this
This is the PERFECT Superman movie. Henry Cavill is MY SUPERMAN. He plays the role perfectly. I am hoping he continues the role in the future.
This one came out a few days before my birthday and i remember all I wanted was that it wasn’t another “Superman returns”
Well yeah this makes me want to watch the Old Superman movies again!!! Pretty damn good and great cast!
The more I see this the less I like it. Henry Cavill is a good Superman but the plot could use some work. The fighting scenes are great.
Horrible imagining of Superman.
Henry Cavill is awful as Clark Kent/Superman. Lois Lane should not be played by Amy Adams.
The plot is a mess. There is so much destruction that you'd feel as if earth was being invaded not helped by Superman.
Dreadful film sadly. And that this mistake lingers on in Batman v Superman, and Justice League.... Unforgiveable.
5/10 as I know much of my criticism is personal and due to casting.
"Action-filled but less than super: yet another summer blockbuster."
Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan team up to deliver a new vision of Superman in Man of Steel. The film retells the origin of Superman, from his birth on the dying world of Krypton to his rise as a superhero when he must defend the Earth from a rogue group of Krptonians. It's a heavy, and at times, convoluted story that's not told very well. Henry Cavill does a fair enough job at creating a new interpretation of Superman, but Amy Adams is a poor Lois Lane. However, the special effects are incredible; though the CGI is overused and ends up overwhelming the plot and the characters. Still, the action sequences add a lot energy and excitement to the film. While it's not super, Man of Steel successfully reboots the franchise and delivers a science fiction focused vision of Superman.
Initial comment after watching it for the first time:
Christopher Reeve will always be the the original Superman for me but this was the best Superman movie I've seen.
Had my doubts about it at first but they were literally blown away while watching. And while I wouldn't go as far as saying this will become a legendary movie it is great and entertaining. I hope they can build on this and deliver a equally good sequel.
Second time watching:
When I watch a movie for the second time, more often than not, I really discover how good or bad it really is. This is even better than I remembered. Or it is the fact that a lot of the last superhero flicks where a dissapointment for me and that makes this one stand out even more. It's intense, emotional and besides the action a great character story. The cast from top to bottom is great. Even on the second watch the movie blew me away. It is a slow build up than culminates into a big finale. Amazing sound effects and the musical score is as great as the pictures. It is a little bit regretfull that the actual fight between Superman and Zod became a bit of an appendix. Especially, considering that he killed Zod, how important it is.
As I said the first time: a really entertaining movie. And, who knows, maybe even on it's way to become a bit legendary.
Updated my rating from 8 up to 9.
I was never a fan of superheroes, let alone Superman. I always thought that Superman was the lamest of all. The embodiment of peace, the handsome guy who saves everyone and does everything in the name of justice, without a single weakness. Until I wanted to watch Batman v Superman, so here I am.
And man I don't regret it. There is so much more to him than I originally thought. Aside from his sexy voice, he is a guy everyone could learn from. Especially to not give in to your own anger, but to keep your cool and walk away knowing you are the better man. Furthermore, the combat scenes were amazing and I could really feel the impact of the punches and the destruction they left behind. Just awesome. Although the destruction might have killed a couple hundred citizens, it didn't bother me that much because I'm not that nitpicky when watching movies. Although I can understand people can get triggered by it.
All in all, this movie captured Superman fantastically, and I now have a bigger appreciation for him.
Origin stories are hard, weaving backstory with a crisis of the moment. In this film it made the story telling broken and the dialogue staccato. It never really settled into an arch or a fluid narrative, which left no time for character developement or plot unfolding. So, instead we were assaulted with stark statements and harsh stereotypes. Indeed, the whole mood of this film is stark: grey tones, steel landscapes and sculptured costumes. Even Superman's traditionally vivid sky blue and cherry red colours were muted to darker hues. Great cast, however. Henry Cavill is an excellent Superman (and beautiful to look at). I'd hoped for better storytelling and didn't appreciate the production direction, so the best I can give this film is a 6 (fair) out of 10.
O "Man Of Steel" não é um filme perfeito.
Nisso tudo, o "Man Of Steel" cumpre magestosamente.
the visual effects just fine, good start for justice league.
This movie is just great. I like it even more now, after watching it at home on Blu-ray. The cinematography is brilliant!
"They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders."
Man of Steel is somewhat of a mess. The film opens with the destruction of Krypton, the death of Jor-El (Russell Crowe), the banishment of Zod (Michael Shannon) and his squad to the Phantom Zone, and of course the launch of Kal-El to Earth. Instantly after this, the film skips ahead thirty or so years and cuts to Clark Kent wandering Earth in search of his true Kryptonian parents. During this time, he steals clothes, looks depressed as hell, meets Lois Lane coincidentally, and does end up finding a Kryptonian spacecraft where he learns where he is from. In between the aforementioned scenes, there are also minor flashbacks back to Clark as a kid and how he learns to control his powers, thanks to his Earth father, Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner). Now that is the first half of the film and believe it or not, that's the more enjoyable part.
Zack Snyder has no idea how to tell a story but I guess lucky for him, there's really not much story in this film to be told. The second half of the film can be described in one sentence: Zod comes to Earth and Superman has to save the world from imminent destruction. That is not a story. That is not how you set up an entire franchise.
Now do not get me wrong because I actually do enjoy some aspects of the film. First of all, the dark and gritty tone of the movie is not something I dislike but instead understand what they were trying to go for and for the most part, the "storytelling" in the film did go with the tone and flow. And the fact that Superman here isn't so happy-go-lucky is fine as well because the DCEU is trying its best to compete with the MCU and I feel as if this is a great way to do so. Superman can't be so cheery all the time, especially when there is so much destruction and deaths being caused due to the events that unfold in the film. Now if The Flash film that is set to release in 2017 tries to go for a dark and gritty tone, that's a whole different story.
The second half of this film is just jam packed with action. Good looking action? Yes. Does it still get tedious and somewhat boring? Oh, yes.
There is one scene in this film when the Phantom Zone is reopened for a bit on Earth, there is debris flying towards it along with Zod's army of Kryptonians. Now the part that is infuriating to me here is how all of those things seemed to be attracted to the Phantom Zone portal but Lois Lane is obviously the one who isn't at all and instead is falling the opposite direction of the portal. And to make matters even more stupider and nonsensical, when Superman does save her from falling, even he struggles to resist the forces of the Phantom Zone from pulling him in. Am I missing something here?
And the "consciousness" of Jor-El. I understand that Kryptonian technology is all futuristic and what not but this seriously just makes no sense. How does he know who Lois is? Why did he only make a consciousness of himself? How is he able to control the ship doors but not the ship itself?
The controversial final scene of this movie where Superman is forced to kill Zod to save a couple humans is one that I actually liked. Sure, its unlike Superman but once again, it goes with the tone of the film. Superman chooses Earth over Krypton; there's actually some symbolism to be found if you read hard between the lines. And seriously, if Superman did capture Zod alive, how would there be any way on Earth at that time to even contain him?
Either way, I think there is some enjoyment that can be had with Man of Steel, mostly in the first half, and its worth a watch to anyone who enjoys big blockbuster or disaster films. However, if you are an avid comic book fan, do not expect this film to follow any source material.
Best Superman film, Henry Cavill is brilliant as Superman
If you like grittier movies, you'll enjoy this but if you're looking for an upbeat and happy Superman, this movie isn't for you.
I understand where the people who dislike Man of Steel are coming from. The things I dislike about it are the same things they dislike. The difference is that the things don't bother me as much as they do others, mostly because I like darker movies in general.
I think Man of Steel's biggest fault is what they did to Pa Kent's character - it's so jarring seeing him be so callous about other people's lives just so Clark could keep his secret. I understand advocating caution but letting a bus full of kids drown?
A good start for Superman series
Whilst Superman Returns remains an enjoyable film and a suitable coda to the original Reeve films (forming an almost cohesive trilogy if the debacles that are III and IV are ignored) a reboot was clearly necessary. Despite initial concerns, Snyder's decision to ignore the iconic elements of the previous film (the music being an obvious one) was wise and allows this film to stand or fall on its own merits without the need to constantly compare (although given the status of the original films perhaps some comparison is inevitable). The film is at its strongest in its depiction of Clark as a boy and young man as he struggles to deal with his powers and Costner is especially strong here. The decision to use these scenes as a flashback however is a poor one and seem to suggest a desire to rush the introduction of Superman, but they do resonate throughout and allow for that important connection with the character amidst all the mayhem. Indeed, the film as a whole seems in a rush to get to the inevitable confrontation between Zod and Superman and when it does arrive, the destruction does become a little relentless. The special effects are convincing yet Snyder forgets his characters and it all starts to become a little wearying by the end. A strong score from Zimmer allows you to forget (for a while) the Williams' classic, but this film is no Batman Begins. However, some excellent casting (Cavill is excellent) and a strong first half will hopefully lead to even better films for the sequels. For now, this has broken the connection with the Reeve films and resulted in a reasonable film.
It's simply, I love all Snyder movies!
Pretty damn good. Considering that critic reviews had me expecting this movie sucked because of the action- I in turn thought the action was amazing. I'd compare the action and choreography to better than the Winter Soldier's with Captain America in the beginning. The ideas- using the cape, fighting in the air, using so many buildings and objects as weapons, what fighting against A-10's and people would like- was just amazing. The idea about being picked on kid was relevant and done well and reflected an Uncle Ben and Peter Parker sorta theme. If Superman used his powers for bad were all hinted in his upbringing and childhood. I personally loved this rendition of Superman and the almost Riddick-like doomsday spacecraft. Superman to me anyways, seemed way more appealing with the darker theme and tech and action.
Cinema Paco: Image 4.75/5 and sound 5/5 I liked it much more than when I saw her in the cinema. The 3D does not add much
After watching the first 10 minutes I remembered that I had seen this movie already. However, for the love of it I cannot remember when or where! I even checked if "Superman returns" somehow is the same movie but labeled differently...
Since this is not the case, I am still baffled and have to get back to the Man of Steel another time b/c currently it is too annoying for me to watch it: if you remember every other scene but only 1 or 2 seconds after having watched it, it kind of grates on your nerves and ruins the whole anticipation.
Wants to be Batman Begins with Superman but all the flashbacks worked for Batman Begins more. Here; they slow down the movie. Plus the film is too serious.
Cavill is much better in this movie than in Batman v Superman though. He at least has scenes where he isn’t brooding. The Hans Zimmer score is excellent as well.
One of the best Superman ever. I liked spaceships and the part telling the story of Krypton.
Awesome Super Hero movie, but batman is better, waiting for Batman vs Superman comes out!
Quite dark and chaotic it doesn't really feel like a "superhero" movie feels like an Independence Day, alien invasion, end of the world, disaster flick. This also could have just as easily been a Dragonball Z movie reboot with one alien force facing off against another.
As it is, it is a "New" Superman re-thought for a new generation; though I think that the last 3 minutes did is more a disservice to the rest of the movie. The movie itself feels gritty and real, very not comic like, a world with hard felt consequence. At the end you are left feeling cheated as they show you a light hearted exchange between Louis and Clark and Superman and a General they throw in a joke about how good looking he is.
There are cool concepts there is great CG, there is mind numbing destruction and crazy super beings fighting on an near god-like fashion. In the end, they took Superman somewhere I am not sure many fans wanted to see him go, while almost destroying the sort of "hard fought" gritty nature of the movie in the last 5 minutes. My guess, this is probably why there is not a continuation.
Christopher Reeve will always be the the original Superman but this was the best Superman movie I've seen.
Had my doubts about it at first but they were literally blown away while watching. And while I wouldn't go as far as saying this will become a legendary movie it is great and entertaining. I hope they can build on this and deliver a equally good sequel.
Incoherente en algunas ocasiones (nunca olvidaré el momento en que el padre adoptivo de Clark decide que ha vivido suficiente), e innecesariamente larga en otras (la batalla final).
why did i spent money on this
Suddenly I'm a Superman fan again... loved it!
I liked this movie so much. Awesome!
Dark, brooding and somewhat difficult to get into, but when you do...
Awsome special effects aside, the movie rocked on so many levels. This had what I needed to fall in love with the Superman universe all over again. A few things could have been better...amongst them the casting of Lois Lane, but other than that the movie has what it takes to relaunch Superman for a new, more demanding, public. I hope some more movies show up in the same 'reality' as this one soon.
Can I really watch movies here??? :)
Other than great CG as a shell this movie was hollow. The original story almost didn't even exist. This was more of a disappointment if you are an avid fan of the superman story.
This movie was nothing like i thought it would be. I figured it would be another remake. I was wrong. This movie rocked!! Totally awesome! Hope they come up with man of steel 2 !!
Was expecting a brooding character study, instead got a passable version of the original story. Nowhere near the movie the original must have begn in the 70s. Tough to make a remake of a classic, and this doesn't add anything. Take it or leave it.
I was a bit pessimistic going into the movie at first but "Man of Steel" turned into a wonderful surprise. Best Superman Movie!
What an action packed movie that had me involved and intrigued the entire time. Excellent job.
For this movie they got the best special effects they could find, then added some more special effects then mixed that into a special effects soup. Movie is not bad but not outstanding but well worth the watch for the visuals alone.
Movie turned out to be more of an action/sci-fi affair than I was expecting and I was absolutely fine with that!
Sidenote: Thought the new Superman was awesome, but didn't rate the new Lois Lane.
The best superhero was in need of a good "remake" to make Christopher Reeve proud. weird and "loose" storytelling along with a not so convening Cavill and the lack of romance makes me giving it a 7 instead of an 8. its was good however to relive some moment that reminded me of the original Superman. I don't really like Batman, but unfortunately this is only the 2º best superhero movie of this century. Hoping that a sequel put supermen on is place has the best superhero ever created.
Awesome. The superman movie I've been waiting for.
I absolutely LOVED it!!! I loved the flashback and the epic battles!
This is the best Superman movie ever.
Two words.. Dog Shit!
I didn't expect much but nevertheless I was disappointed.
Saw the movie last night and I didnt liked it.
The whole movie I was missing that "superman" feeling that I had while watching the old movies and Smallville.
Lois was terrible and the romance between Clark and her was forced, I didnt buy it.
Smallville is a way better than this in my opinion.
Not certain -- at all -- that either Jor-El or Jonathan (or Lara or Martha) would approve, but there were certainly some spectacular moments -- literally moments of spectacle -- that should be seen on the big screen. The Man Of Steel he may be; the Superman of the contemporary era he is; the Man Of Tomorrow I certainly hope he is not.

This is THE DEFINITIVE Superman movie. With truly spectacular cinematography, a heartwarming coming of age story, enthralling action and perhaps the best superhero movie soundtrack ever from Hans Zimmer, this movie hits every beat for Superman fans new and old.
As a DC comics fan growing up, the critical response to this movie prevented me going to watch it at the theatre. I mean who wants one of their favourite superheroes being "humourless", "too violent", and "not epic enough"??? Well, I can truly sit here now having said "lesson learned". Never again will I allow critical response to prevent me from experiencing something I had waited a lifetime for. I will never get to see Man of Steel in the theatre, and this movie was shot for the big screen. Some of the shots are truly beautiful, especially when he wakes up in the ocean with whales, and when he learns to fly in the snowy mountains.
The story is often criticised for not having the kookiness of the original four movies with Christopher Reeve - and don't misunderstand this for hating on the first few iterations, I have nothing but fond memories of growing up with those films - but I challenge anyone to watch those movies now and claim that they still hold up. A truly great movie as well as standing the test of time, has rewatch value, and Man of Steel is one of the few superhero movies that I have watched time and time again. This requires a great story.
The story of this movie focuses on a boys relationship with his fathers, and his coming of age through those guises. His cautious and protective Earth father who tought him the morality and goodness we expect from our Superman, who sacrificed himself in order to keep his sons secret; and his Kryptonian father who encouraged him to embrace his difference and be the man Earth needs him to be.
A bonus is that the relationship between Lois and Clark doesn't seem forced. You get to see how she is a great investigative reporter and through her reporting she discovers Superman's true identity. By protecting it, you can see Clark's appreciation and the weight of not being able to talk about it to anyone - something that bothers him throughout the great flashback scenes as wonderfully portrayed by Dylan Sprayberry and Cooper Timberline - being lifted.
The character development of the antagonist, General Zod is done in a way other superhero movies can only be envious of. The message that this character, like all other Kryptonians are born with a specific purpose, in this case to protect Krypton at all costs, comes across well. From his perspective he is the superhero of his own story, trying to save his planet and his people, and that is the truest of tests for supervillain development.
And this brings me to the epic and controversial (for some reason) third act. As mentioned earlier, Superman has a strong moral code instilled in him by Jonathan Kent, which is shown throughout the flashbacks. Any observer who doesn't see that Snyders portrayal of Superman has the most morality of any Superman in cinematic history is simply not paying attention. He doesn't spin the Earth backwards to rewind time just to save his girlfriend like in the original, and he doesnt go back to Smallville and hook up with Lana because the love of his life Lois is ignoring him a little bit like in Superman III. That Superman, despite all of his displayed morality (e.g. where he refrains from fighting the bullies) feels he must kill General Zod is one of the most powerful moments in superhero movie history. He repeatedly begs Zod to give up his quest to destroy Earth and humans now that his quest to return Krypton has failed. Zod makes it clear as day that he will NEVER give up, and that he will destroy humanity at all costs as an act of revenge. What was Clark supposed to do? He was left with no choice! Add to this the fact that Zod's laser beams were inches away from killing a whole family, Superman reluctantly had to break his neck. Yet unlike other superheroes he did not gloat in victory, the pain and anguish in that scream that follows is filled with the heartbreak of breaking both his moral code and killing one of the few other fellow Kryptonians in the universe.
Overall, this movie gets better every single time I watch it. If you haven't watched it since it came out and had mixed feelings the first time, please give this movie another try without the immediate negative reviews that were extensively covered in the media at the time of release. It truly deserves it. Man of Steel is THE DEFINITIVE Superman movie.
