Ok so the acting was alright, but basically I just spent almost 2 hours of my day watching an annoying couple argue over a thank you speech and all of this in a b&w filter. I mean...
At the end of this movie, I felt exhausted as much as the characters themselves... As it has already been said here between the comments, I think that this was intended by Levinson and therefore I cannot criticize him over this. I do recognize Malcolm & Marie as a great movie but it is not my cup of tea.
It's absolutely not about boredom or some other bullshit I've read in other reviews. I personally think that I didn't really enjoy it because I felt no attachment to the characters for some reason. What a pity.
Pleasantly surprised with this one. I thought I would be bored but I really felt this couple. I didn’t feel like they were toxic at all. This felt like it could be real life for a lot of folks... IMHO
[Netflix] If a white critic tends to oversimplify an Afro-American director's movie message, can a white director understand an Afro-American director's motivations? It is one of the doubts that remain after this exercise in self-compassion. After a resounding and attractive first part, the rest of the film feels as if we are listening to the writer, not the characters, here subjected to the tyranny of a text that remains text, without completely being free to become part of them.
the girl's last speech in the film was the most redundant and unnecessary, too bad it ended that way
Malcolm & Marie is a film student's wet dream. This is one of the most pretentious, exhausting, narcissistic movies I have ever seen in my life.
I wish I was half the genius Sam Levinson thinks he is. Dude really thought he can get away with writing a movie about his thoughts by casing a ‘black’ actor. Genius decision! And since he is writing about himself, Malcolm & Marie is just about a obnoxious filmmaker that is too good for his girlfriend. Levinson is a guy who hates women and has been on Twitter enough to figured out that he can add ‘white’ in front of women and be able to express that hate without seeming misogynistic. That’s the rule created by ‘woke’ Twitter. :weary:
The movie is horribly overacted. The two actors don't have chemistry at all. The guy from Tenet is definitely better in this one but still I couldn't stop wondering why is he in the film business - because of his mama or papa? As for Zendaya - she is such a beautiful woman but I don't think she was ready for this role. She is great at playing teens but not good enough to seem genuine about mature subject matter.
The plot is just so boring. Without watching the whole movie (there is no way in hell I can finish this 106 mins commercial for the latest high-end fragrance), I’m sure all that happens is that Malcolm drinks, yells and swears in Marie's face and keep repeating that he is ‘black. That is the film. And the dialog is just terrible, they literally say “fuck” so many times just to spice it up I guess.
Anyone who likes this needs therapy, please seek help immediately. :exclamation:
Like, I understand people are angry that Sam Levinson’s ego is so fragile but isn’t every artist’s?
I don’t know where I stand in the identity politics discussion and Levinson projecting his own insecurities about writing for Black characters onto this film. I don’t know if I even need to form an opinion on that issue, or can just accept it doesn’t really have an answer.
All I really do know is that this film, and Zendaya particularly, made me feel everything. And as much as I like formulating an educated opinion, I can’t help but feel frustrated that time and time again people who just seem to hate everything that is popular out of spite ruin those experiences for me. I understand the issues people have raised against this film, it’s normal to instantly feel defensive when a piece is this critical over critic itself. I also know I am only now taking my baby steps in film studies, but if I don’t trust the very initial feeling a movie awakens in me on the first watch, then what exactly can I trust to form my opinions? Everyone else’s opinions?
Malcolm & Marie is an incessant fencing match between two incredible actors, with tantalising chemistry, with blocks of monologues that almost seem written for the theatre, but were uniquely elevated by the cinematic medium’s particularities. Take away everything you know about the director, look at the film just for itself, and if you still hate it, that’s fine, but I thought it was brilliant, and I hadn’t been as moved by a performance as I was by Zendaya in this for some time.
P.S.: honestly the only criticism i legitimately will not accept about this movie is how toxic the relationship is and how annoying the characters are... why do you want to see stories about happy relationships and stable people? isn’t the whole point of writing a story that there has to be a dramatic premise to drive it? what’s dramatic about two people who never argue and are happily together?
The spiritual sequel to Euphoria, but with presumptuous dialogues.
Except Zendaya's acting and the last scene, it was very bad. The sound of smacking his mouth while he eating pasta disgusted me about Malcolm, the sound of the movie was coming to my mind anyway, I fell asleep when i am trying to watch it about two nights, boring.
Not sold on a lot of what this offers, but the acting from Zendaya and John David Washington is absolutely phenomenal - flawless, in fact.
The aforementioned duo are truly outstanding, I loved their performances from start-to-finish; whether it the more serious bits or the more amusing parts. Great delivery, best acting I've seen in a film in a while - no word of a lie.
As noted at the top, I'm admittedly not fully sure about the rest of the film. I'm definitely not saying it's bad, disappointing or anything but I am unsure about it. Honestly though, the two leads take away any negatives I may have from the production's other departments. They elevate it, for sure.
I'd fully recommend checking out 'Malcolm & Marie' - if only for Zendaya and Washington.
Half way through the movie I was wanting it to be over
Not a good sign.
The Linklater trilogy starring Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy would be what I would recommend over this drivel.
That emotional rollercoaster which didn’t move me at all but annoyed.
Very raw, very beautiful. Amazing soundtrack.
it's actually exhausting, they both are, and the movie too!
Its a movie about a toxic couple that somehow works. It didn’t get me as marriage story did . There were moments where I had to applaud both of there performances. It reminded me a lot of the conversations I wish I could have had with a toxic partner. The score was perfect as usual what Sam Levison delivers.
I don't know if any couple would survive all the conversations that these two exchanged in just one night... "Emotional terrorists" is the right description. They managed to drive me to the ground every single time I found myself being sympathetic. I'm not sure what I'm feeling right now. I guess that's the intent.
(A few honorable mentions: The top-notch, very fitting song choices; the pure grossness in Malcolm bringing out his exes and their brokenness as arguments and the chuckles the "authenticity" sketch's ending brought.)

Ufff.. what an emotional rollercoaster this was. I'm afraid Zendaya looked like a teen to me and I couldn't relate to her character. Although she did an amazing job with the knife scene. I kind of saw a bit of Woody Allen wannabe in the whole movie. Still very raw to be an Allen.
I wasn't bored during the movie, time went by quickly, so it's all good. Could relate to some discussions, maybe that is why i liked it. Good soundtrack too. And I like tenet guy too... his name is John David Washington, Solange!!! :) Learn his name ppl, he's going to be around much more and I'm glad he will.
