In 1955, a year after the creation of the FLN, Mahmoud was expelled from colonial Algeria and found himself living in a shantytown in Nanterre. After clashes with the French police, he was arrested and imprisoned. Released, Mahmoud resumed his expeditions, this time against the harkis.
