I liked the film, even though logic was often sacrificed for effect. For example: G.H. reaches the beach and discovers a wristwatch sticking out of the sand. He uncovers the watch and discovers an arm. He looks up and sees the body of a pilot belonging to the arm. He continues to look around and sees that there are bodies and debris all over the beach, including huge pieces of debris from the plane. The effect was nice, but of course you would have seen the debris and the bodies immediately, and not discovered the watch first.
I can't believe that I really thought for 90 minutes that this :poop: would develop in any direction that makes sense.
This is by far the worst movie EVER made, a total waste of time and resources.
I will now have to go over all my one star rating over the past 30 years and upgrade them to 5 stars!!!!
I have no words for how bad this is and can't believe that Kevin Bacon and Ethan Hawke said yes to this...
OH boy... Don't get me started...
I'm about to sue Netflix for stealing my precious time.
I can say straight up this will not be a movie for everyone, but it really clicked for me. I would also say a blind watch is preferable in movies like this, I went in knowing almost nothing and if possible I think that's the way to watch the movie if possible.
For me it was incredibly immersive once established, with incredible sound design and score. The slow build of tension, unease and dread as things unfold. I'll admit, I've always been a fan of mediums that give the viewer the same amount of knowledge of whats going on as the characters have, and this nails that.
The premise has a whole has been done many times before, including this years Knock at the Cabin, but I've not seen that or read the book it was based on. But in relation to the other similar films, this takes the top spot for me.
While the ending itself is probably the weakest part of the movie for me personally because it answers just slightly too many questions a little bit too easily, the journey to get there was still worth the time and I think the ending might still work for others.
I hate movies like this. While good enough to keep you watching for 2 hours, waiting for more, the ending is so bad, that all you are left behind is, I wasted 2 hours of my day. I usually give mediocre movies a pass, but this is not necessarily a bad movie, it's just the ending is so bad, that ruins the whole experience. I'm not a cinema/novel expert, but directors must know that for a thriller/suspend to work, it begins with the ending. Anyway, I rarely write a review, but it is upsetting to be dragged along for 2 hours + to end like this. Most actors did a great job, even though some of the character's behavior were so odd within the context of the movie.
Also, tired of the woke Hollywood storyline's having to be inserted in the film with Myha'la's character, subtilling accusing Robert's character as racist because of her concern about the safety of her family when 2 strangers show up at the door of the house they are renting and later telling her dad "we can't trust white people". Thankfully, those are more roll your eyes moment than pervasive through the film, but it keeps with the race baiting theme being pushed in today's society.
Excellent, and definitely not boring.
Great premise, characters, story, sound design, and direction. One of my new favorite end of the world movies. 9/10.
I love reading all the fragile white men (I am a white man) cry because a black character says something negative about white people, or a white woman is portrayed as a bit racist. These characters were very true to life, and any callout of race is now “woke”. What about the thousands of movies from 1900 till now that portray white characters as black saviors, or black people as helpless/illiterate/etc. I guess those are fine because it doesn’t hurt your feelings and makes you feel good. Maybe it’s okay to show how black people feel without demonizing them? Maybe you will never understand what’s it’s like to be black in America, especially when you don’t believe there is even real racism effecting many parts of black of America to this day. If being “woke” means you can empathize with the experience of others without crying about yourself then I’ll be woke. “White” is a complete bullshit race anyway. We are from different ethnicities (Irish, Italian, German, English, Polish, etc.) Many of which groups were not even considered white until the 20th century. Even Hispanic is becoming part of the “white” in group. The only people who will never be white are black people. Stop crying that “white” people are being attacked.
Esmail masterfully builds the tension by refusing to provide easy answers. What exactly is happening outside? Is it an apocalyptic event, a power outage, or something more sinister? The film keeps us guessing, playing with our perception of reality and the characters' increasingly conflicting narratives. As trust erodes and suspicions rise, the lines between the two families blur, forcing them to confront their own biases and vulnerabilities.
The cast delivers stellar performances, breathing life into the characters' complex emotions. Roberts sheds her Hollywood polish to portray Amanda's descent from privileged complacency to fearful desperation. Hawke is equally compelling as Steven, struggling to hold his family together while grappling with his own anxieties. Ali and Herrold provide a grounded counterpoint as the Claytons, their enigmatic presence fueling the uncertainty.
Esmail's signature visual style adds to the film's captivating atmosphere. The cinematography is both lush and unsettling, with sweeping shots of the idyllic Long Island landscape juxtaposed with claustrophobic interiors and flickering shadows. The haunting score further amplifies the tension, leaving you on the edge of your seat.
While "Leave the World Behind" might leave you frustrated with its unanswered questions, that's arguably its greatest strength. The film is an unsettling meditation on societal collapse, class divides, and the fragility of our comfortable lives. It's a puzzle box of a film that invites multiple interpretations and stays with you long after the credits roll.
This is 141 minutes I will never ever ever get back, trust me fast forward to the end and then delete from memory.
Great movie, makes me hate children for no specific reason
Julia Robert’s career must really be in the shitter for her to take this role.
Went into this completely blind. It looked weird, obviously, but so am I so no problem. Saw Sam Esmail wrote the screenplay, directed, and co-produced it, so I was like ok gonna be REAL weird then, cool. Saw the Obamas helped executive produce it, at this point I’m just confused but let’s fuckin’ go I guess.
Icky things:
- Before the title even pops up Julia Roberts turns to the camera and breaks the fourth wall, not something I appreciate in movies in the way they did it here; it served no purpose.
- Making the dilemma of not trusting a bunch of strangers (from both sides) a moral returning concept throughout this whole movie is kinda weird, because absolutely no one is blaming a person for not wanting to stay in a house with strangers when your kids are sleeping upstairs, even if those people turn out to be very trustworthy. You do not take that risk even when you think the world is ending. (Was she actually just being racist? Is that what she admitted to? I don’t get this character)
- The whole “People suck” narrative is a little on the nose in this one, and if anyone should enjoy it it’s me. It’s just that there are a lot of good movies that make me FEEL how evil humans are, they don’t have to say it out loud 20 times. It takes away any emotional impact on the subject because it’s not an existential dilemma I’m having, it’s just their story.
- I’m all about a good open ending that makes you THINK, connect the dots, and tap into your good ol’ philosophy side of the brain. This film does not trigger any of that, it simply stops and you’re left thinking about how fake the CGI flamingos and deer were.
Good things:
+ The sound design in this movie doesn’t let you forget how off-kilter it is, it’s constantly there to remind you that you shouldn’t be relaxing, stay on edge. That is clearly very much intended and lends itself to the weird ominous vibe and they 100% succeeded.
+ Mahershala Ali is the stand-out performer in this movie. He’s a great storyteller and whenever his character was revealing some new information, he had me on the edge of my seat.
+ At the end of the day, I don't need a movie to be "good" to enjoy it. You can have lots of criticisms and still feel like you were entertained by something. At no point during this piece was I bored or checking out, I always wanted to learn more about what was happening.
A lot of tension for nothing, I would say. Nevertheless, the use of the camera is brilliant, I simply loved what they did.
Who the bell decided to put these 2 (Hawke and Bacon) in the same damn film??! Talk about a mind f**k.
There's a core of a decent film here, but it's poorly implemented.
The sound mix annoys the hell out of me. Good sound quality, everything's fine and the REALLY LOUD alerts and high pitched sounds that serve no purpose. That's not that unusual with action films mixed for the theatre, but this is a Netflix film.
The camera movements though, are way worse. 90 degree rotations that really don't serve any purpose. I get that they're trying to be disorienting, but they're just breaking the film experience for me.
That's nothing to compare with the glaring product placements of Starbucks and Tesla and Friends. FRIENDS?
Then there's the ending.
LOST had a better ending than this shit.
Fuck everyone involved in this.
"Don't worry that the world is ending. You've got sitcoms."
Uggggh ... I can't believe I invested over two hours to this!
Started off OK, quite interested in what was going on. Moving to the 2nd part it rapidly became quite boring. ... too much irrelevant personal interaction stuff. Finally, in the last part, it became ridiculous! Are we to believe that the USA is so over un by RWNJs that they start destroying the city within a couple of days of the internet going down? LOL No need to answer that question ...
I'm so tired of movies without a proper ending. it's not edgy, it's lazy
"Those are... flamingos."
What in the nonplussed, haunting soliloquy was that?! Went in completely blind and that was the right choice. It felt like watching an M. Night Shyamalan movie. It's essentially a psychological drama comedy with a "mysterious event" happening in the background—a great mix! The characters are interesting, the drama works because of this and some well-placed sharp comedy. It's weird, creepy and the mystery is intriguing.
This was actually my first time seeing Julia Roberts in a movie and she was hilarious. Really good acting from everyone. Myha'la is a newfound favorite. Simple yet effective suspenceful score, artistic visuals, nice camerawork and editing. The back and forth between two suspenceful scenes technique is done really well here. Incredible how many themes this movie tackles, there's always something to disect on-screen.
Some weird nonsensical character decisions that are a bit frustrating at times. Too long of a runtime which would make a rewatch difficult, it was totally possible to trim down. Favorite moments are the boat scene and the Tesla scene—on the edge of my seat! I thought the ending was perfect. There are sooo many clues and hints dropped throughout the movie that there's no way it could feel unresolved at the end.
I've never watched Friends
Would have been nice if at least 1 character was likeable
In short:
Racist crap.
Weird.
Senseless.
The movie is so ridiculously empty, it’s obviously just to promote race baiting bs.
It seems to be very popular in Hollywood. In almost every production these days there are derogatory remarks towards white people.
Racism is a constant theme.
Oh god.. where do I even start.
The Good:
The Premise was one of the biggest strengths of the movie, aligns perfectly with the thought provoking narrative. The film captures fear and confusion as the world is crumbling around them, from the get-go the viewer is suppose to keep guessing what's happening and leaving us doubting the very meaning of existence. Director Sam Esmail does an excellent job at keeping the viewer engaged throughout the movie despite the inconsistent pacing in the later parts. The performances by all the adults are masterful.Unlike the cookie-cutter disaster movie you get most of the time, this time you are not puzzled with clear cut answers but rather invites the viewer to question the nature of the crisis befalling.
The Bad
I thought I was the only one who felt the cinematography and the camerawork was overdone but some reviews I read the same thing, the constant use of slow motion and the subtle movement of the camera while transitioning smoothly to different cuts, although unique, it's overdone and looses its magic too soon. I had the same problem with the soundtrack sometimes the film tries to overexaggerate suspense and abruptly ends.
Recommendation
If you enjoy slow-burning, thought provoking philosophical thrillers, "Leave the World Behind" is a must watch, if you are not a fan of open-ended conclusions and prefer action packed disaster movies, this is clearly not for you.
I’m left with so many questions. If I knew next week would be part 2 then I would give it a much higher rating. This ending left me so unsatisfied. Good movie nonetheless, keeps you wanting answers and see how it ends.
what the actual fuck???? be fr what is even the point? film kurang dana.
Obama did this movie?
Horrible movie …
Full of Useless Woke Shit
Like all the best fears, this lurks just beyond the edges of your peripheral vision.
This ends of the world flick proves you don't need to have an exorbitant budget and a glut of special effects to generate effective suspense. You just need to have a great cast, the hunt of terror, and some images that strike you when you're not looking.
Just a point to mention. Whilst most of the reviews were unhappy with the ending, me included, it's important, that on reflection we can form our own opinions of how it could have or not ended. The point of the story is how we, humanity, got into such a situation in the first place.:fuelpump::passenger_ship::small_airplane::fire::moneybag::satellite::earth_asia::earth_americas::earth_africa::globe_with_meridians::statue_of_liberty:.
M. Night Shyamalan would be proud of this. Well made, tension building and a pointless naff ending. Especially disappointing after 140 minutes
Just watch it and form your own opinion.
I had totally creepy vibes during most of it.
Could something like this really happen?
Yes.
This movie was a colossal waste of time, seriously such a bad movie.
Primado negativo.
They are just programming you.
Visually beautiful, mentally frightening. I haven't been this lost for words in a WHILE.
The casting is MOREEE than perfect, and the story was so genuis it made almost no sense.
It left me so feeling so surreal that the only way to explain it is if you watch it.
Wow..This movie is filled with predictive programming.
Criticker is usually within 1-2 pts of my score but for this it guessed a 6.7 vs my 7.3 score (I base on 0.1-10 vs 1-100 scale) for ease of sharing review between multiple sites. This is to mean I naturally gravitate towards this kind of movie. Nice to see Esmail direct a feature film like this again. Good performances, excellent tension and chaos. It'll be divisive, but an easy win for me despite some message heavy handedness. One of the better NF originals you'll see. Loved Mahershala the most
I wanted to hate this movie because the Obamas were involved. I though it was going to be crap. Yes it had some wokeness as expected, but also added conspiracy source. The acting was not bad and the end was okay. It is a watchable move.
What the fuck was even the point of this movie
Never forget to sprinkle a little racism towards whites in to your movie, gotta appease that woke crowd.
If you only care about an ending, maybe you should watch some other kind of cinema. There are plenty of choices for you.
If you care about a great script, superb cast and acting, beautiful camera work, intriguing plot, a tension feeling without really knowing what's happening kind of movie, well, this one is for you.
Sam Esmail has delivered a great work here. It ticks all the boxes that you could expect from him.
An ending like this one, is very subjective, but it works perfectly for me. It just feels right. We found out what was really happening, and Esmail put it in a clever and kind of funny way.
Read the synopsis and don't watch the trailer, the less you know about the plot, the better you enjoy it. I loved it.
Way to long , boring ,made zero sense and a terrible ending
Expected only the worst, but that was actually awesome!
Strange and confusing, but good.
I wouldn't call this bad, but it was forgettable. The anti-climactic ending certainly didn't help. It was intriguing near the start, but I find it hard to recommend.
Amazing …till the end. WTF?! So fucking lazy. I hate it when writers set up crazy scenarios and then never answer them.
Was this supposed to be episode 1 of a series? That's the only thing that makes sense to me. They pulled the plug and edited what they had to be a movie and released it to recuperate some of their investment.
What annoyed me the most was how the director kept building suspense by jumping back and forth between stories, the music gets larger and larger and then... Nothing! This happens over and over again. After 2 hours+ of nothing happening (except low-level personal drama between the dull characters) the movie just ends. No resolution for anything that happened. No real buildup either. It. just. ends.
At its best when it concentrates on the people together in the house. Less successful when the setting moves away or dialogue turns to exposition.
The stuff with the animals makes zero sense in the context of the film.
The black girl was so annoying. I was hoping she would die.
The movie was great if it was about the planet and we were being invaded.
But no, only America.
Who cares what happens there.
Julia Roberts was great as always despite the woke stuff. Don't apologize for reacting like that woman. They weren't black or white. They were strangers.
White people need to stop apologizing for everything. Enough is enough.
Sam Esmail, take a bow. The style, pace, punch and composition of this contemporary cyber thriller is top notch, a film that feels no where near it's 141 minute runtime. Harrowing, darkly humorous and while also being a poignant, cautionary tale, Leave The World Behind is dripping in Sam Esmails signature style while telling an equally depressing, all-too-real story that touches on many themes surrounding the human condition in the modern day, as well as environmentalism and technology reliance. Fantastic movie, I can't wait to watch this one again.
-- Spoiler-filled ramblings below --
I really love the topics that Sam Esmail tackles, and the lens with which he frames them. It's an interesting look at the destabilization of a country after a, worryingly plausible, large scale cyberattack. The movie critiques our over reliance on digital conveniences and champions older, more analogue technologies as a more reliable, persistent alternative. The virtues of physical media, maps, books, vinyls and even candles are pushed to the forefront here, reminding us that our devices are all useless without the power of the network behind them. It also critiques our inability to trust our fellow man due to the digital echo chambers we've built ourselves, and the prejudices these spaces create within us without ever meeting the people it warns us about. Additionally, it shows the younger generations, unheard and toothless (heh) in their protests while being actively ignored by the elders, resorting to over consumption of food, material possessions and media to escape and block out the incoming end of the world. There's also commentary on the environment and pollution, with plastic haphazardly buried under the sand on the beech, and the wildlife encroaching back onto the land we've built our overtly large accommodations on. Still trying to put my finger on why all the rooms in the movie are overly blue, it was garish how much blue was in the first apartment shot and the beach front home that G.H. owned. Great movie, I guess I should buy and read the book now.
This movie is a prequel to The Handmaid's Tale.
If you watch it thinking so, it makes much more sense.
So the black girl says - and I quote - "...if the world falls apart, trust should not be doled out easily to anyone, especially white people." I guess if it's towards white people, then it's not racist at all, right Netflix? Imagine white people saying the same towards blacks, there would be so many asses on fire on the Internet.
Oh, and of course black guy is smart, brave and nice. And white guy literally says "I'm useless".
Another Netflix woke propaganda piece of crap. It's a shame those white actors do and say anything for a pile of cash, no backbone or principles.
Oh yeah, and the story itself is very cliche and has no point or good ending, so don't waste your time.
A solid premise marred by an overlong runtime and illogical events and characters. I like that the characters are flawed and messed up, but this took it just a bit too far, and their decisions were often frustratingly illogical even with the goal of self-preservation in mind. Performances were pretty solid, though.
Commenters here calling this movie "woke" are making me scratch my head. Apparently, "woke" now means any movie featuring Black people even in a supporting role where skin color plays any role at all. In the end it was a human story about people overcoming differences and showing each other compassion.
It was a great movie in the sense that the actors, dialogue and general "movie making" skill were top notch. A lot of hidden messages, or hints, or subtle foreshadowing everywhere. I think this movie will be analyzed a lot in cinema schools.
However the end was way too abrupt. I like an open ending as much as anyone but this one is too open ended. The story needed more closure. I distinctly remember thinking "wait, it's over?" when the credits started rolling and that's never good.
I understand that the goal of this movie is to enjoy the journey rather than the destination but... We'll there's not even a destination it seems.
It's still a strong movie that's worth watching.
This movie isn't about the impending doom or possible apocalypse. It's about a girl watching her last Friend's episode.
I wish I was kidding. The build up and everything was great until the end. The end was a literal slap in the face.
Side note: Ruth Scotts character is the worst. All she does is try to entrap the husband and then says not to trust white people then 5 minutes later she says "wE sHoUlD sTaY tOgEtHeR hurr durr", her character is nothing but constant complaining and inconsistencies.
Brilliantly suspenseful and saturated with existential dread.
Also, Esmail fans will catch some hidden references.
Really enjoyed this film. I highly recommend going in blind and letting the film reveal itself. Technology thriller? Horror? Sci-fi? It's not instantly clear. The lack of certainty where the film is going only makes it more engrossing. The pace, trying to figure out what's random and what's pertinent... there's a lot of old school tension building mixed in with paranoiia and modern geo politics. I've avoided saying much of anything about the film to give people a clean run at it but essentially it's a very good story, very well told.
I read a lot of comments about the way they depict racism in this movie. Unfortunately the scenes were not that unrealistic, but I think they felt a little theatrical because they didn’t blend well with the movie. I can’t really explain it.
I do not agree with the haters of the ending. For me it makes a lot of sense, because I did not expect the last ten minutes to be war scenes of any kind. I too hate “artistic” endings. However, you only see one character, but you know very well what the others are up to. There’s no “guessing” in my opinion, there’s closure.
Movie is pretty good. Ending is trash:joy:. Needs resolution.
Hated the ending. Could have been developed better.
Not a bad movie but the deer made absolutely no sense.
Rated a Connor 0, normal 5
I was very pleasantly surprised by this film. The story is so captivating and tense that I was glued to the screen the whole time. The performances are great as well. I already had a suspicion that by the end of the film there would not be a lot of answers. These kind of movies usually end this way and it‘s not different for this one. Still a great movie that kept me engaged and interested the whole time.
Very underwhelming— hopefully A24 Civil War will be better.
Rubbish story, no sense,
In a little over two hours, 1.4 times to 2 times.
It's weird. What do you mean?
Didn't work for me. I went blind in for this movie because the casting had Julia and Ethan. But few minutes into the movie it turned really boring. I couldn't feel the anxiety or any kind of fear which usually this movie must make you feel. I don't recommend this movie.
I hope this happens to some countries
Good movie.. kept moving along at a good pace. The ending sucked though... it just stopped.
Biggest problem I had was Julie Roberts... this chick fell out the butt-ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down... why did the director insist we needed close-ups of her?!!
8/10
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Leave the World Behind’:
Gosh, how much I’ve missed Julia Roberts.
I almost forgot how much I love Sam Esmail. I was enamored straight out of the gate here, hooked right away. His direction, the way he frames everything, the way he builds tension, the use of music, how all these characters had constant, quality, well-developed interactions with each other… he’s a genius. So much talking and I was never bored. Not for a minute. Now I need him to write/direct a horror film. Can you even imagine?
As the buildup progressed, and the story headed towards its unfathomable conclusion, I worried more and more that it wouldn’t stick the landing. But it most definitely did.
Bonus Thought: The Thornes know what’s up with that Buffy collection. I’d be all set lol.
The black chick pissed me off from moment one. Kept saying “our house.” Well bitch, when some one rents your house for the weekend…. You lose rights to it. If the rest of the movie is as bad as the first 20 minutes, I am not going to make it thru this movie.
Because it's a Netflix production, the message behind it is that no matter what happens, Friends will always be in their catalog. Am I right?
Not exactly sure why everyone is hating this. I mean, I hate the end message (there most definitely is a hierarchy of power to the world + people are awesome) but the actual film is definitely good with moments that are undoubtedly iconic. Still manages to have that forgettable netflix feel to it somehow though.
Myha'la is a star. And Julia Roberts plays what is probably the most unlikeable character I've seen in some time.
the movie is so good. until the end. the end was so bad that made the entire movie a joke. why did I lost 2 and a half hour watching that. really, the worst ending ever.
A really slow burner that doesn't "end" in anything. For being a Sam Esmail product, I was kinda expecting more. The plot and every single subplots, not only have 0 twists, but they actually don't end in anything concrete. After Mr Robot, I was expecting a masterpiece, but it is not the case. Many holes are unaswered and left you hanging. And on top of all that, is almost 2 hours and half. That time for a dead-end movie, it just sucks. I'm being generous giving it a 4 because of Esmail and his touch in photography and scene, but if I was truly honest or it was any other director, probably would be barely a 2.
I thought the movie is okay but it didn't really explain much until the mid/ending of the movie..weird on how it ended I guess
Completely pointless movie thats a rehash of many others and the ending is incredibly anticlimactic. Dont waste your time with this one.
Well. That was something, I guess.
First off, the cinematography… that was a choice. It tried to be edgy and fancy and it just gave me a headache.
The story… it had a lot of options here. I didn’t know where they were going with it. Honestly I am still a little confused at what the director/writer created, but alas here we are.
The characters were mostly insufferable. But that means the acting was good, right?
All in all, I will never watch this movie again.
:asterisk_symbol::asterisk_symbol::asterisk_symbol::asterisk_symbol:WARNING: keep your sound remote next to you at all times. In addition to extremely loud soundtrack during the beginning, there is a high pitch noise during the movie that is excruciating.:asterisk_symbol::asterisk_symbol::asterisk_symbol:
:heart:x7
This was a really good mystery/thriller. It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way thru - right up to the very end which unfortunstely for me was a bit of a letdown - but at least I understood the ending.
The music/sound for the movie was excellent and enhanced the whole experience tremendously.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
I usually give a movie like this a few days before I make a decision about how I really feel about it. Now a couple days later I can comfortably say I enjoyed this one. Make it a point to not read too much about it before watching and just sit back.
Hella scary ride with a somewhat unsatisfying ending.
Another not so subtle wokeish pile of crap from Netflix. The premise promised so much, and yet the movie delivers so little. I literally knew the moment I saw the weird daughter that the last shot of the film would be her face. Anti white, anti government, anti men, ultimately leads to anti… itself.
My rating for the movie is 3/10. I'm surprised that such actors decided to appear. I must say, I had a good laugh. This movie is a collection of many conspiracy theories. Everything thrown into one bag to scare and subliminally program people.
This movie will scare Republicans because it is "woke". Another item added to their list.
For those of us who don't live in an echo chamber... this film touches on actual issues that we are living in right now. Technology dependency, racism, disaffected youth... to name a few. The premise is plausible, the reactions from the characters are genuine and well executed and the ending is explained to you if you payed attention.
There are few dull moments and if your audio is good, a few jump scares will keep your heart rate up.
I've never said this...but this is an avante garde waste of money and time.
I cannot help but feel this is just an alternative script to "Knock at the Cabin" which came out earlier in the year. Surprisingly, I think there is more meet on the bones here compared to its counterpart as well. The one negative is its length. There is a much crisper 100–120-minute film in here. Regardless, I really enjoyed it. A good thriller is always welcome on my tv!
Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend
Short review. Copying this to other movies I am doing all at the same time.
The first beginning part of the movie is good. Things are built up well. However, as the movie goes on, the same thing happens over and over. They just stand there staring at something happening, and they don't actually show it for like 2 whole ass minutes. Very aggravating. This movie could have been SO, and I mean SOOOOO much shorter. I liked the implications of it, though.
At Time of Review:
Low 6/10
Story and Characters: 5/10
Presentation: 7/10
Enjoyability: 6/10
Well what can I say, the film started off well and you always had the feeling it was building up to something, but then bish bosh bash and in a couple of minutes at the end it attempted to explain what was going on and it ended, leaving me somewhat annoyed. I am expecting there will be a sequel at some point
It was okay, would have appreciated the movie a bit better if the context had more realistic details and explained in a less simplistic way. There’s no need to build suspense in that the US has enemies and this is a suspected terrorist attack. That suspense screen time would have been used better in expanding on what the weapon is and how the characters know about it from the start and try to avoid being dicks to each other. Ken
I enjoyed most of it but the idea about the general events leading to this scenario don't make any sense.
Example: If some people knew in advance what was to come, they could have used the precious time to share relevant information. And that would have upended most of the effects George described in his ear scenario.
A lot of symbolism...
I think it's good, obviously it's made to entertain and it could stay there...
But my imagination makes me believe that the representation of the characters, as well as very specific moments of the movie, make you see the society...
Just Amanda's opening with hatred of people...
The drone dropping leaflets and Danny's confirmation that the Koreans were responsible, gives rise to misinformation....
I think the most gringa scene I saw loud and clear was Danny asking them to get off his property, with the shot showing him and his gun and waving the Gringa flag....
Fuck that was so obvious....
The shots of the satellites and such, well they're fine but something will mean....
And the fucking ending is very gringo indeed, I know, I don't know why but I know that shit is written in such a way that you take it as something absurd, the fucking girl all the time showed signs of attachment to technology (who doesn't in this times), and that shit was very clear....
Maybe I'm just loving it....
But Fuck it's good movie, message or not, it could come to pass....
There's fiction, but it's fucking somewhat realistic, to say the least....
This movie needs part 2 immediately.
The movie itself wasn't bad but the way they ended it was just dumb. It feels like they ran out of budget and just decided to slice the ending off.
Amanda is seriously stupid. You email back and forth with someone. Then a day later they give you their name and you can't put two and two together? WTF?
Also, Amanda and Clay do realize blackouts aren't everywhere when they happen, right? Apparently not because a blackout in the city is a black out everywhere in their mind. Damn these two are not very bright.
Plus, we have ships without working navigation systems, TV (and Internet) that is out, and cell phones that are out. Hmm... perhaps there is something going on? Maybe? And Amanda is worried about people returning to their own home when there is plenty of room. G.H is trying to be as calm, non-confrontational, and non-hostile as possible. Amanda is worried about her kids, I get that, but doors have locks and the kids are old enough to know how to use them. Seriously? Just stop being a stupid bitch.
Ruth is a total bitch, as well. She has an attitude from the moment they show up at the house. However, she seems far smarter than Amanda is.
And that is just for starters... things do get slightly better, but I seriously hope she dies. I care for her continued existence in no way. In fact, I hope that Amanda dies in some horrific way to compensate for having the character in the film. Julia Roberts is fabulous for making me loath her character.
However, I love when Clay drives off and just leaves the woman on the side of the road. That was hilarious. I would probably do the same thing. If you can't calm down enough to try to communicate when there is a language barrier, I don't have time for that.
And the blockade of EVs that were hacked and driven to block the road. So funny! Because having a computer controlled vehicle without any actual security is a good thing...
To give Amanda some credit, she gets a clue at the last minute. It took about 5 times longer than it should have, but she did figure it out. It should have been obvious when every single car was a Tesla. I knew the answer before they even came to a stop, let alone all the time it took Amanda to wander through the vehicles. But we've already established Amanda and Clay are clueless.
As usual, Mahershala Ali is awesome. He is great in everything I have seen him in. Plus Ethan Hawke and Kevin Bacon. A fantastic cast, but an okay film. And a terrible ending... really WTF is wrong with Rose?
Don’t watch it, otherwise you will waste 2 hours and 22 minutes of your life.
Starts good. But very clear that writer had no clue how to wrap it up. Feels like I wasted my time
Watch it knowing the ending will feel unfinished.
I was really engrossed in this movie
I really loved this movie
So much symbolism and so many lessons for how we are seeing the world fall apart around us, even right now and ignoring it
The problem is the ending
It was the lazy way to end it
They didn’t know how to end it, so they didn’t.
This movie will always feel like a tv series that was canceled right after an amazing second season finale cliff hanger and the writers had no clue so they didn’t get the chance to end the series properly.
Fantastic movie right up until the credits rolled and you realized that they cheated you at the end.
One of those movie which could not justify the ending as the overall movie.
If parts of this movie had been used to tell a different story and one that actually had a decent ending it might not have been too bad. As it is I think I’d rather not have bothered watching it and as ever, Netflix peddling the woke bike way too hard. None of the characters were particularly likeable, a couple outright objectionable and did I mention the crap ending? Pretty dire overall.
This movie is very stupid.
Great cast and production values, but so full of holes that it became rediculous.
Geez, what a waste of time!
I was sold when the Tesla's escaped the Gigafactory, really entertaining movie from Sam Esmail
