I was pleasantly surprised by this film. The film explores a different side of superheros. Don't we all want to be a superhero? Sure, the film is a little over-the-top at times but that's ok sometimes (when it is planned and well-done). It was dark and funny and very much unlike any film that I can remember.
For all the buzz, there's something missing from from this movie, and I still can't quite figure-out what it is.
When I thought that Nick Cage couldn't be a good actor anymore, he managed to fool me by giving a great performance as a father who has an addiction to weapons and violence that his daughter takes a liking to as well. Kick-Ass, on the other hand, is the opposite, having a lack of knowledge on anything outside of a comic book. Making him a target for misinterpreted intentions and comedic situations.
The transformation of characters in this movie is a true spectacle. One of the better "super-hero" and "anti-hero" movies of late that really makes you feel for the protagonists. Chloë Grace Moretz is just great in this movie. An outstanding child actor who gives a perfect performance as a tough as nails and bad-ass kid who has quite an emotional scene that she did quite well.
For the story, as I said the transformative narrative is very likeable and even though it has done before, it hasn't been done quite like this. It is really well done and is very well shot to help with the comic feel of the movie. There is hardly any shaky-cam as the action is beautifully done with some nice artistic elements that don't distract from the emotion, but instead add to it. The comedy is also well done, though it does fail to deliver some lines for some reason or another. But most of the comedy has to do with slapstick or embarrassing moments, so it doesn't get harmed too much from the dialogue.
A really good super-hero/anti-hero movie that ticks almost every box.
Entertainment by cheesy extreme violence and a girl that swears like a grown up. I'm not against stupid movies that are entertaining but this is bland sometimes. Low score to balance it.
Total tripe! :(
Chloe Grace Moentz is the badest little girl in scifi, this and Let me in put her on top, can't wait for Carrie!
One of my favorite Superhero films, even though the comic is a million times better
The only bit I didn't really like was the jetpack-minigun bits. Everything else was great.
What a surprise. Matthew Vaughn proved what he is really capable of with this movie. While I am not familiar with the source material at all, my unfamiliarity didn't stop me from enjoying the hell out of "Kick-Ass".
While action set pieces certainly take the forefront, "Kick-Ass" has a great amount of emotional and genuinely sad scenes, all very well balanced to fit in with the action.
Main character is interesting, with his motivations and changes he's going through really well laid out - it's Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage's amazing performance) and Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace-Moretz so confidently good) that really steal the show here. Her relationship is what fuels the story, and the chemistry between them is top notch.
Strobe scene doesn't get enough recognition I think, but it shows perfectly the extent fathers are willing to go for, to make sure their daughters are safe.
"Take cover child... now switch to Kryptoniiiiite!" Nic Cage screams in agony, while being burned alive, tied to a chair... what a powerful moment and great piece of acting from him.
Comedy is also mostly on point. It's a great movie, through and through. Good job, MV.
This movie was badass! I enjoyed it when it originally came out, but REALLY loved it now! I didn't know who Matt Vaughn was before, but in the last decade+ he has really grown on me. I know we got a Kick-Ass 2, but I need another one of these ASAP!
Rating: 4.5/5 - 90% - Highly Recommend
14 years later and this is still a fun watch... a bit over hyped for a while there, but that doesn't matter now. So... despite awful looking effects... Kick-Ass still... well... Kicks Ass!
the film is great, with incredible action scenes and a good touch of comedy and sarcasm related to the superhero universe. However, personally, I don't really appreciate the protagonist's awkward comedy and I didn't feel very involved with his story. For me, the best parts of the film were whenever Nicolas Cage or Chloë Grace Moretz appeared, followed by Mark Strong and, finally, the protagonist.
Has this become obsolete because of Deadpool and The Boys? Maybe, it’s certainly not as effective when it comes to deconstructing superhero tropes. However, there’s also this 2000s indie feel to this that still makes it stand out, half of the time you’d think Edgar Wright directed this in between his Scott Pilgrim lunch breaks. The style and action are the two things that definitely still hold up, the editing is very sleek and the lighting/colour grade have that distinct Matthew Vaughn vibe. The action is also very well put together, lots of good, visceral choreography and the scenes with the scene stealing Hit-girl are easily the film’s best moments. In fact, whenever Moretz and Cage are on the screen, the movie really comes to life to me. I’m less into the material that’s given to Taylor-Johnson and Strong, both of those characters fit a lot of typical tropes and the performers aren’t bringing anything special to it. They should’ve pushed a little further, because half of the time it isn’t satirizing or twisting the thing, it’s just conventionally doing the thing. For example, you could cut out the romance subplot without losing much of note, as there’s nothing special about those scenes. Overall, this is perhaps not aging as well as some of Vaughn’s other work due to how exhausted this genre became in the years following it. Still, I do prefer it over the vast majority of modern superhero films because it feels like something that’s made for a specific audience and doesn’t look like grey sludge.
6/10
This was great it was so fun and not scary or worrying. it was also quite funny it kinda felt like a comedy tbh
When the title of the film is the name of the super hero and also my entire 2-word review.
I remember how Kick Ass floored me when I saw it on the big screen during its theatrical release, and watching it tonight on French network television, I was floored by how well it holds up.
Non-stop action, surprises, humor, a tight script, strong acting... An inventive film from beginning to end, and so good it almost makes us forget the sequel.
It was the movie DC and MARVEL never made.
If you always wanted to see Bad Ass Batman with Killer Robin then you are in for a treat.
Not my kind of movie. Didn't like it.
10 - Totally ninja!
Such a great movie with stellar performances, a totally different kind of super hero movie.
it just Smacks of virginity
J'adore l'actrice principal
Get ready for the new classic superhero movie!
Fun, but a bit mindless. Just like the comic.
awesome ! waiting "KICK-ASS 2"
Very funny, it loses a bit of its concept after a few minutes, going from "normal person being a hero" to "crazy movie hero stuff with ninja movements and flying machines".
But still, very nice. So wierd to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson in this movie, he looks very different in Anna Karenina
Awesome indeed just drags out too much
my fav movie, maybe cause he has my computer hope they dont change his laptop next movie
The only word to define this movie is "funny"
Wasn't what I was expecting. Much better in fact!(3)
Didn't quite reach my admittedly high expectations, but not far off. Still very much recommended.
awesome soundtrack, awesome fighting...
after the really promising trailer, still far better than expected.
Waste of time..
