Wow, this is a hard film to like. It's not the indie film we're promised on the poster, in fact it's a horror film disguised as an indie darling.
I fell in love with Katie... during the first act but when the second started I began hating the movie with a vengeance. Which normally would mean a low rating, but this film wants you to hate it. The director made the film specifically so that you would hate it and did such a great job that he succeeded. Olivia Cooke turns in such an incredible performance as Katie that she fills your heart and then breaks it into a million pieces. Katie is the imperfect victim in this emotional bloodbath and Cooke's acting makes that knife all the more poignant.
Be warned, Katie Says Goodbye isn't an innocent indie heartbreaker, it is the Grave of the Fireflies of indie cinema.
If you think you've ever had a bad day, think again. A very dark and desolate film.

Katie is bright, optimistic and cheery. Unfortunately, this is in start contrast to the world around her, where the oppressive nature of the life she lives threatens to swallow her whole. Disturbing and bleak; your heart will break for this character lost in a place she yearns to escape from.
