Joy Ride 2023

So many back-to-back laughs—our screening was having a blast! Hilarious performances, great ensemble, and some stealth feels that had a number of people sniffling and crying. Go see it, in a theatre, and bring friends because a crowd only enhances the fun!

It's Crazy Rich Asians meets The Hangover. I'm not really a fan of either of those, so I'm not entirely surprised that this didn't click with me. The movie is at its best when it's making fun of the cultural differences between characters. However, more often than not, this movie will fall back on the same old lowest common denominator tropes that makes most studio comedies so boring. Most of this consists of wacky situations where things go cRaAaAaAaAaZy, lame raunchy jokes for 40 year olds, pop culture references that already feel dated, men being objectified to an obnoxious degree and a lot of painful, cringy dialogue. The story is more of an excuse to string all the bits together, there's not a lot of cohesion to it. There's an attempt to give the movie some weight at the very end, but because it doesn't really put in the work during the first two acts, it doesn't land. Again, I'm not the target demographic, but I wasn't the primary target for Turning Red or Beef either, and I ended up really liking both of those. This is just lazy and formulaic by comparison.

Like an Asian Bridesmaid. Laugh out loud funny and crass.

Yes please! Great cast, great setting and a decent script. Finally we have a leading lady movie with this kind of humor!

We loved this movie. It was hilarious and made us laugh so hard we cried. Then we cried some more. And their "K-Pop" song had us rolling.

Humor is generally a matter of personal taste, but at least for me, "Joy Ride" worked really well. The R-rating is really utilized here, and in terms of tone, comparisons with the Hangover films certainly come to mind. But the difference here is that women are primarily in charge, both in front of and behind the camera. And I believe it's evident in the script in a number of places, which I can only applaud. More female voices, especially in the comedy genre, can only ensure more diversity.

Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu star as the film's leads. And, despite the fact that I wasn't familiar with all of them beforehand, they are completely convincing here. They all have no trouble delivering the humor, which is aimed well below the belt.

The only thing I would accuse "Joy Ride" of is that it becomes a bit formulaic towards the end. The resolution is predictable and certainly the weakest part of the film. Overall, though, it's still a really strong, raunchy comedy. It's a shame that the film flopped at the box office. I wouldn't have minded seeing more films featuring these entertaining characters.

Incredible, hilarious, we need more comedies like this. Just pure fun and a very talented cast.

Like a bachelorette party: raunchy, forced and not intended for me.

I'm all about women making sex-positive comedies, but wouldn't it be better if they weren't just remade teen sex comedies?

This 'American Pie meets Crazy Rich Asians' had a couple of genuine laughs and a couple of genuine feels but I expected more from a female written & directed project.

I enjoy raunchy humor. However, this took it a little far even for me. The bags of cocaine stuffed in orifices, the crazy tattoo, the puke. Beyond cringy humor. But also some funny moments to redeem it.

I'm surprised Awkwafina wasn't in this.

Wow! This is not good. This is just bad. I am speechless no further comment.

I really enjoyed this movie. I haven't laughed so hard to a comedy in ages.:clap_tone1::rofl:

Not so bad but I didn't like the sense of humor.

This joyride dips and stalls occasionally but some very funny moments elevate the journey.

Film 38 (Goal: 300) of 2024

Pretty damn good comedy, in a time where comedies aren't so hot. I don't know what it is, but the Asian comedies are really kicking lately. Ashley Park continues to be fantastic in nearly everything she touches, Sherry Cola balances her character well without ever veering into annoying territory, Sabrina Wu does well with an offbeat character and Stephanie Hsu is a revelation. The sex night scene is a classic. Great film. More people need to see this.

It's hilarious. The raunch gets a little over the top, but every Seth Rogan movie whether he's in it or not gets over the top as far as raunch. I think the low scores show a problem with women getting raunchy and with the idea Asian women might.

Honestly I was a little disappointed since Asian women often get over sexualized by "white" America in particular, but add in the Seth Rogan factor and it's not intentional. It's just the style of humor he tends to back. He tends to have raunch whether it's a guys film, a film with a blonde bombshell or a cartoon. It's right up that alley.

Anyway, I laughed throughout. Thought the characters were great together and while the travel portion (the road trip itself) was an unbelievable, corny concept, the whole movie was meant to be a bit corny.

9/10. unless you're racist, then a 5 or less. If you think you aren't, this is going to test you. If you don't bust out laughing at the first scene, you're probably too racist and can turn it off.

This was a good comedy lol

Okay... I've never watched a movie with sooooo many Asian stereotypes all together and yet the core is sooooo America lol. Well, at least it's still entertaining. Ganbei to that lol.

Seems like these types of comedies have been having a resurgence, and I've honestly been liking them so far. I'm sure some people will have some crazy takes about this movie though.

These films are not made too often anymore, which makes this one so much more impactful. It is somewhere between Bridesmaids and The Hangover, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Very funny and easy to recommend!

Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend

I was clutching my pearls at some of these scenes, but I couldn’t stop watching it Lol

"Slide's off limits to Ching-Chongs."

I am so happy we can still get comedies that aren't afraid to go the extra mile and know how to make fun of themselves as well. Reminds me a little bit of Girl's Trip and Euro Trip mixed in one.

Joy Ride is mostly Joyless Ride sadly.

I made it in 20 mins over two attempts to watch. Then, a friend came over who was excited to see it. We watched and laughed throughout. The movie is far better with a group.

ok so it is a baby from Hangover and The Bridesmaids. Aggressive humor, of course it wanted to offend out of every joke forced upon and a bit juvenile. It has some good laughs but it tries too much. For a 90 minutes movie it can pass as entertain but you forget it the next day.

The crude humor in Joy Ride can be funny at times and then over the top just for the shock factor. The R rating is well deserved on this one. It has some funny moments but whether or not it's worth sitting through the rest of it to get to them is up to you. It's ok, definitely not great. I'm glad I did not pay to watch this in the theater.

This is just...fine? It follows the same structure as a Hangover movie, but never really hits the same pace or fun. The train-drugs scene really is the peak of the movie and it's a shame it's so short and happens so early in the runtime. Probably would have been elevated by watching with friends and a few substances, but as it stands it's just a very cookie-cutter, contemporary take on an old formula. If you've seen either Bridesmaids, The Hangover or Ghostbusters 2016; you've already seen Joy Ride.

I wanted to like it more than I did. I liked the cast but didnt really like the rhythm of humor, the setup/joke felt very unnatural with a lot of the delivery. I appreciate that they would get kind of silly and out there but the emotional beats seemed to hit stronger.

loading replies

Unabashedly crude throughout. I've heard it playfully called the hangover on wish. That's the selling point so if that's not what you're after it's probably not for you. Some sappy stuff as well (which my wife appreciated). Decent comedic timing, but followed too many straightforward tropes to separate itself from the pack. That said I'd say it's a 6.3 worthwhile effort.

If you enjoy 'murican comedy with vagina jokes and puking on people thn you will love this movie! I gave some stars because "yay" Asian American exposure

It's a shame that the writing for this movie wasn't up to par with the fantastic actresses that starred in this movie. The whole drug thing.... really? That's an example of good comedic writing? Unfortunately it borrowed heavily from movies like Bridesmaids (I had the same complaints about that movie). It is a shame that these movies are becoming so formulaic. That said, the last 20 minutes was really good.

Was going good until the stripper music came along.

It's not bad but it's not great. There's genuine funny moments but for a good portion of the scenes I was left feeling like it was overly cringey and forced. It truly suffered from not having a story to follow and just a loose plot. This seems more like a netflix movie than an actual theater movie. 6.5/10
