Beautiful Jennifer!
Love to see her working with Bradley Cooper one more time.
Edgar Ramírez was so fun and cute!
Dascha was AWESOME!
This move is good!
I feel like this movie could be so much more.
I mean, it's a great cast, the idea of the story is good, but then it's just boring. :/
Well, I managed half an hour and lost interest even before that. I thought this is about a woman who invented things not some half-backed comedy with clichéd characters and lame jokes. This can really only be loosely based on the real thing.
Rubbish. Good thing I didn't pay for this. Can't think of anything good to say. Displeased.
I have to be honest - this movie infuriated me for a number of reasons.
1). I know that any movie can be summed up in a way that makes them seem far less dramatic than they are. Star Wars was a conflict between father and son. Goodfellas was a movie about the mob. But for crying out loud, this was a movie about a woman that invented a new mop. A new freaking mop! That's a far cry from Louis Zamperini facing Nazis, sharks, starvation and being beaten in a Japanese prison.
2) Jennifer Lawrence acted her ass off in this movie but one still couldn't help wondering why the babysitter was pretending to be a mom. Way too young for this role.
This kinda goes back to #1, but... who thought this was a story that needed to be told? Sure, it's fantastic that a divorced mother made it big with the help of some wealthy associates and despite a freeloading family . In one seen they had about 48 things go wrong in the span of 90 seconds (had it been 100 seconds I am convinced a meteor would have struck) just to try to show the hurdles that she had to come. And if it was so impressive why won't they tell you which parts were factual?
The dialog. Oh the freaking dialog. Because this didn't make for a good screenplay Russel had to rely on dialog to inform the viewer about a variety of plot points. At one point he has the daughter ask questions that no child would ever ask. In another seen De Niro informed his daughter that she had to declare bankruptcy (and wouldn't you know the lawyer was standing over in the corner with papers to sign!).
I could go on and on. What a waste of a talented cast.

Jennifer Lawrence is becoming a Meryl Streep level actress. Hugely enjoyable to watch, convincing, a captivating beauty, yet somehow still a girl next door.
This is a vehicle for her to showcase and she does shine. It's an interesting real-life story which is quite sad as she is surrounded by a horrendous family - made bearable only by very good actors!
It felt slightly formulaic as many rags to riches stories do. But we'll worth a watch.
7.25/10
Good lord, what a deplorable family. It's a wonder this woman accomplishes anything with the lack of support and blame laid at her feet by a bunch of freeloaders. And finally when she's successful, she too becomes someone that is stereotypical of a successful woman. Ugh! I didn't hate it but it wasn't great either.
I really wanted to love this movie. Great cast, stylish cinematography, interesting premise. In fact, I truly loved the first half. But most of the characters are so mean spirited and one dimensional that I just became frustrated. And the climatic scene in Texas was way too predictable and easy.
Went in knowing next to nothing about this, and pretty much loved it. Engaging story with good characters, and a flawless performance from Jennifer Lawrence.
This isn't anything like I expected from the trailer which gave the impression of a woman living many lives with a string of storylines abound in perhaps a convoluted plot. In reality, it's about a mop. That's marketing. It's about a mop made by a woman who keeps her dependant, dysfunctional family afloat without so much of a glimpse of time for any self-care. The characters are diverse and have depth, even if you did wanna punch them in the face. Jennifer Lawrence and the characters she plays are always an inspiration which is what this film was.
Jennifer Lawrence is too good for this movie.
decent acting but horrible production and editing. continuity and many other elements were terribly hobbled together.
I had no idea what this one was about when it popped up for my Movie Club. On one hand, very happy it was much more enjoyable than expected. I love my biopic style movies, and for better and worse this is one of them. It is pretty middle of the road in terms of execution, which is saying something considering the topic material might possibly be the worst of them all.
Rating: 3/5 - 75% - Worth Watching
Nothing innovative, in business you must have a mix of luck and courage because most of those who trying lose, and only the exceptional ones succeed.
25 yo Jennifer Lawrence shouldn't be playing a middle-aged woman. The ageism in Hollywood. The movie was okay, but I felt sympathetic towards the main character, so it achieved something I guess.
Refreshing. Great acting. Would watch again.
Directed and written by David O. Russell, Joy is the remarkable true-ish story of a woman’s struggle to realize a dream. Loosely based on the life of Joy Mangano, the film follows a divorcée and mother of two who’s inspired to create a revolutionary new kind of mop, but in order to make and sell it, she’ll have to risk everything. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper, the film has a strong cast that delivers excellent performances. The writing is also quite impressive, particularly the dialog; which simplifies all the business wheeling and dealing and makes it understandable. Still, there are parts of the film that don’t work, and the Joy character is over idealized. Yet overall, Joy is a compelling story about empowerment and perseverance.
A bit too theatrical, but a good one in the see of blockbusters.
So motivating and true, jennifer is amazing as always.
I never enjoyed Russel's last film, American Hustle, so I approached this with trepidation. I'm pleased to say that it mops up that movie's stain and delivers an interesting true life tale that the cast and director stylishly convey.
Firstly, I approached this film with some trepidation, it is not a secret that director David O Russell appears to be a horrible man, so any film made by him is accompanied by thoughts of him bullying the actors and being unspeakable vile to anyone who is unlucky enough to be far down the pecking order on set. In his defence, he says he is changed but all reports from his sets seem to say the opposite. I find it hard to reconcile entertainment with people being treated like some form of lower life even if huge amounts of money are involved. Secondly, having seen a fair few of his films I had the niggling suspicion he is making films for the actors, having big confrontational dramatic scenes with lots of eye-popping shouting and arm waving or over-the-top gurning and wackiness. I often think yes Jennifer Lawrence you’re enjoying this but how about the audience? So, with David O Russell I’m biased.
Even worse the film starts with a quirky family and immediately it started to grate but then something happened and I began to settle in and enjoy the story. All the familiar faces were there, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper – no need to the check the cast list they’re always in his films – but I notice Lily Tomlin wasn’t there [check YouTube to see how he treated her] and George Clooney who he had punch-up with.
As I mentioned the characters do start off too quirky and ‘crazy’ but as it moved along I started to perhaps get used to them and began to enjoy the unfolding story. Jennifer Lawrence is always good at acting out a ‘normal’ everyday character, although of course Joy was anything but normal, and the roadblocks and test put in her way to her eventually success made for a fun and enjoyable ride.
Even more the film veers into the pastiche territory as Russell plays spot on gangster movie with certain scenes and set-ups and the story is more joyful for it [no pun intended]. As simplistic overcoming the odds to succeed film this is hits its brief perfectly.
Russell still pushes the ‘look at my acting skills’ showcasing to the front and some scenes, even for a ‘this really is not the true story and we admit it’ film really are huge plot mechanisms and silly. The secret Narnia passage that leads to the workshop that uncovers the duplicitous of her injection-moulding supplier is bordering on something written by an eight-year-old. I wonder if anyone said ‘really’ when the script was handed over. They were probably sacked or punched if they did – or both.
Overall this film is entertainment and in that is the one and only soul purpose of it – so it is a success. Nevertheless, though it is a bit simple and in some places, almost childish in the storytelling. David O Russell is not as great as he thinks he is.
Terrific job by Jennifer Lawrence, clearly stepping up her career.

Stop casting Jennifer Lawrence as an older woman. We all know she is young, we can quite literally see it. It becomes annoying throughout the movie.
