Very tense movie, not the horror you would expect but still very well done. I love seeing small scale movies that just focus on a few characters and how they react to bad circumstances. Joel Edgerton is great, a scary man who you don't know what he is capable of.
the acting is good i guess and its cool if you're into slow paced movies. i just couldn't stand paul and sarah apparently not giving a shit about their son's mental state and also I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS! they literally gave us 0 answers as to what was going on except that there was a disease killing people in a matter of days.
what the heck comes at night?
how can paul so easily kill a woman and her child?
who/what made the dog run into the woods barking like crazy?
Frankly, quite a disappointment. Not as horrifying as I expected based on the trailer. The subject is interesting, but the execution is very ineffective and lazy. After seeing the final scene, it seemed that the filmmakers ran out of ideas. Although the plot was pretty poor, the actors did a good job. I also got to agree with that, yes, this is more of a psychological thriller than horror. Maybe should watch it another time to get more of it. However, I don't want to diss it too much. It was just very much different from my expectations. Certainly a much more rewarding experience for someone else.
So what this movie does is make you come up with about ten questions and leave you hanging on most. The first half of the movie is just plain boring, followed by one super intens moment because when Paul shot the little kid and Kim started to scream for her child, that went right through my soul. and it ends right after that with a very predictable ending.
I honestly don't understand why this movie is called 'it comes at night' because nothing came at night. It's a movie about a mysterious illness and yes, many of the events happened at night but other than that there was nothing tying the title to the movie.
Apocolypse plus stupid people equals decent movie
I went into It Comes at Night with no background information. I thought it was a really interesting story and well made. The scope was purposefully limited and it was a very effective tale. I was very surprised to see the wide disparity between the critics and the audience reaction. I'm not surprised because I thought the film's title was strange. What comes at night? As far as the movie showed, nothing was the answer. The advertising probably sold a different movie than what it ended up being: a tense psychological thriller set in a world where some unknown illness is plaguing humanity, but where that doesn't play a major factor.
The excellent camerawork and music are really what end up selling this. Some of the shots in this blew my mind, especially the tracking shot during the first meeting between Joel Edgerton and Christopher Abbott. The acting’s also very good, the characters and drama are compelling. I could’ve done without the shifting aspect ratios though, its use makes some of the revelations a little predictable. It also could’ve used some more memorable scenes in general, I’m unsure how much I’ll remember from it after a while.
Still, this is a good exercise in drama and building tension. The horror of it is a minor footnote, don’t go in expecting a cheap slasher or some schlocky premise. It does provide plenty of food for thought, but you have to piece a lot of it together yourself. The title doesn’t refer to anything concrete, more of an abstract concept. It’s a little artsy, but not inaccessible, though it requires critical analysis and engagement in order to appreciate, otherwise you’ll outright hate it.
7/10
Once again, the trailers and marketing have mislabeled this movie. Many will think it is a horror film and will be disappointed when they watch it.
This is a drama film with a hidden mystery, the viewer witnesses the daily lives of the characters without knowing what is happening explicitly. Being a film with very dark lighting, and where there are a couple of jump scares, it can be interpreted for some as a scary movie, but it is not a horror movie (the story progresses slowly, there is no gore or violence).
Moral of the story: in an apocalypse, don't help strangers.
There was a time when I would only watch horror movies for the gore and shock value but I expanded my horizon and started watching masterpiece such as the witch and the blackcoat’s daughter and I realized there is more to horror then just scares and within the horror genres there are sub genres.
This was on my list for a long time but I never got to it and today I finally did and while the runtime isn’t long it’s a decent enough film.
The movie was more of a perspective of a family that’s trying to survive and nothing else matters. There’s not much that goes on but we see a lot that the family has gone through and the impact a post apocalyptic world can have on people.
The one thing I liked was that it had the hereditary vibe to it but comes no where close to being that gem.
It’s decent and probably a one time watch.
"It Comes at Night" is every sense of the word brilliant. Not your typical monster or trashy gore fest. Psychological and unsettling is more fitting. You barely know anything and that's the main horror behind it. The unknown and the darkness.
However, you do get a sense of what's going on be each little details. Not by characters explaining the plot to the audience, which logically wouldn't make sense in a normal conversation where these characters are one step ahead of us.
Which audience members hate. Life is very, very complicated, and so films should be allowed to be, too.
The pacing was smooth and the cinematography was so excellent, it adds to the atmosphere with the setting. And you actually like the characters even the harsh decisions are understandable, because in a fear of panic you will do the same. Not a single weak performance in the movie, everyone fitted the part.
And that ending was so cold it left me physically broken. The feeling of hopeless, somewhat reminded me of "The Mist" ending. Grim, but it felt purposeful and personal. Also leaving you thinking and try to put the missing pieces together to fill in the story.
People who say this movie is predicable or it's been done before I really don't get. I really didn't know where things were going. It honestly felt unpredictable. This been done before? Well if it has then this did it better in terms of execution.
Overall rating: Been a few day since I've seen it and I'm still thinking about it. Haven't seen Trey Edward Shults previous film "Krisha", but my curiosity for he's future work has peaked.
This is just like an episode out of The Walking dead, very slow and very lacking. The performances from everyone however were pretty great and enjoyable. Made the movie worth the watch for me.
It's funny how avoiding trailers can make your experience with movies better.
Horrible marketing. I really liked this movie in the end but it's just not at all what I expected from the trailer and overall marketing (including the name of the movie). It's a great movie and had it been advertised correctly I think more people would have loved it. But this way almost everybody just leaves disappointed because it wasn't what they wanted and expected.
I get why the critics gave it the positive reviews they did; the cinematography was outstanding and the direction and performances were all very good. I enjoyed it a great deal for those reasons. However, I also get why much of the viewing audience was less positive about it (like the two friends I went with.) It is most definitely a slow burn, psychological horror film that lacks the in-your-face shock and/or gore moments common in the majority of contemporary horror films. It's also bound to leave you with more questions than answers (as one friend complained, "There's not enough info!") If you want to see an extremely well made film and aren't put off by films with a slower pace that demand a bit of imagination, I highly recommend it. Seriously, some of the camera work is breathtaking.
The suspense was as dark and as thick as the night I saw it. Not a teenage slasher film, but excellent psychological horror.
Well, this is awkward. I´m still waiting for "them" to come and the movie ended a while ago...
The film was okay, more post-apocalyptic psycho-drama than horror. I did expect more, however, but that's mainly because of the misleading hype the movie received.
this was a good movie, should NOT be under horror genre through. i can see why horror enthusiasts would give this movie lower ratings. the movie does have suspenseful moments and shows what lengths people will go to protect their family from things that even they don't understand.
Some will love it and some will hate it. It wasn't what I expected but that turned out to be a good thing. Great performances and I believe if there was a scenario like this, then it would be pretty close to the way people acted in this movie.
Not a bad movie, better than many others, everything here is based on the struggle to survive, no matter what....
How and what happened causing the sickness is not important, this is more about the people trying to survive and the uneasy trust in others. At times you wonder where the looming danger might come from, the newcomers, from the family itself or outside..
The film is moody, beautiful, sad and suspenseful and not the typical horror survival flick led to believe by the trailer and title..
What ever you do don't pay your hard earned cash to watch this at the cinema. It is slow, painfully slow. There's no suspense or action of any type. It was a shock when the credits started coming up the screen because nothing had happened. The best thing about this movie is that its not on very long.
A well made horror movie that is much different than many others that have been released recently. It uses a dark and mysterious atmosphere that really adds to the suspense and creepiness that is present in the film. With that being said, this movie is a slow burner and I found it to be drastically different in pacing than what was shown in the trailer. There were a couple of aspects I thought could have be improved on but it is a well made horror movie that utilizes atmosphere as opposed to the generic horror formula.
The writers of this movie:
"i have no idea what i'm doing"
yawn, pointless and confusing. Nothing interesting happened and there was no point for the title or the movie
This movie had me intrigued and captivated from start to finish.
This won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it immensely.
I only wish they would have given me just 5 minutes on what was actually outside.
Well acted and well shot film.
Honestly this was a pretty boring movie. I get the fact that it’s a psychological thriller, and a lot of people think very highly of this one, but I had a hard time staying focused because it was so boring.
A completely pointless, post-apocalyptic psychological thriller that fails as a cautionary tale because it has zero teachable moments.
17-year-old Travis had the hots for the other mom. Was that explored, resolved or utilized later? No.
Paul seemed to be growing envious of Will bonding with Travis. Was that explored, resolved or utilized later? No.
Paul was suspicious of Will's backstory because of the slip-up about his brother-in-law. Was that explored, resolved or utilized later? No.
The film spent more time showing Will and Kim fucking than any kind of meaningful interaction between the two families or their family members.
All plot, no story.
Horror....horror...kinda horror scary. Paranoid fathers fight, guns shovels and some gnarly blisters...wow imma never not no go out into da woods thats for sure my.brothers and sistera. but hey why all the scary creatures tryna fuck with us at night? what about lunch time? huh i dunno
“It Comes At Night” is a more than decent post-apocalyptic thriller that leaves everything vague and focuses on family and human relationships and the acceptance of the inevitable. It plays with all stereotypes of slow-burning horror and post-apocalyptic survival dramas until the last 30 minutes, where the film takes a more courageous and unconventional approach.
So again, a film in which you are just bored, bored, and again just bored. I'm waiting for the whole film for something interesting, but it's not just boring again, so I wish this film, which is to be a horror, finally ends. I don't even know what to write anymore because the film was so lifeless that it's not an eye to write and I'm glad that I finished the film at least to the end.
DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER. I REPEAT. DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER.
The trailer for this tension-filled drama is a complete misrepresentation of what the movie is actually like. It totally betrays the focus of the movie and what it's really about. This is probably why some audience members are turning this movie away, because they either don't understand it or had different expectations going in.
That being said, I don't even really consider this a horror movie. That's to be expected with low-budget Art-house productions, like The Witch, but even The Witch was filled with actual scares and real dread. I still go back to that movie to this day, because it left a very real impression on me, a very creepy one.
It Comes At Night boasts 3 things:
Great performances
A claustrophobic and sometimes very tension-filled environment
Good music
And that's about it. The reason I'm giving this movie 3/5 stars, an above average rating, is those qualities really sell this movie. Those 3 things made me feel I didn't waste my money and got my time worth's spending.
Let me make something clear first before I go any further. I LOVE slow-burn horror movies. I'm an advocate for them. When a movie can perfectly combine jump-scares and atmosphere, it makes for some of my favorite movies of all time.
The problems I have with It Comes At Night though are 2 very simple things, and this could just all be me and only problems for me:
It feels like there's supposed to be this feeling of dread throughout the movie, I felt like I was supposed to be really depressed and battered down at some of the events happening, but a lot of these tension-oriented and scary scenes didn't really go all-out. They didn't go balls-to-the-wall and kept a scene going for more than 5 minutes. What I mean is, whenever a situation came up that was bad, like the dog barking at the woods and then running off, it never went past the initial concept of the scene. The scene lasts for 5 minutes, the family goes back inside the house, maybe a TINY bit paranoid, and then a few scenes later, the dog shows back up sick from the unnamed disease, and has to be put down. It wasn't like in other movies, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Witch, where a pivotal scene like that would just build and build. The only scene that resembles something like that is in the finale, and even then, it's only about 10 minutes tops.
And the other thing was they NEVER explained what actually comes at night. I know, I know, this is a very silly response that sounds like it would come from a mainstream movie-goer who doesn't get these kinds of movies, but this aspect of the movie actually bothers me. They NEVER, EVER, ONCE, in the entire movie ever even hint at what possibly could be causing the disease or where's it coming from. No talking about where it started, how many people have it, just nothing at all. My problem is, I wouldn't mind that they don't fully explain the disease, but the fact the title of the movie and even scenes in the movie itself hint that they would eventually explains "what comes at night." Does the disease only show up at night? Do nightmares only show up at night? I guess these questions don't really matter, but it'd be nice if the movie distracted from those questions long enough to get me really invested in what was going on with the families.
Also, the ending is one of the biggest fuck you downer endings I've seen this year. It's almost as fucked up as the ending to The Wall. And YES, I understand the purpose of these twists. They tie into the central theme of the movie.
I just, I don't know. I want to give this movie a higher rating, but something about it is holding me back. There were tastes of genuine tension and there were great performances, but I don't know. I may have to think about it longer before revisiting this.
This is by far the bleakest movie that I have seen in 2019.
The only horrifying thing about this film is that after 90 minutes I was still to be scared. Why is this a horror? It's a thriller/drama at best. It's not even a good mystery, that's not even touched upon. Disappointing.
This movie is disgustingly boring. I did not find anything interesting in this crap. Somehow it made me similar to The Walking Dead
Came expecting some Blair Witch forest-at-night scares, found an existential post-apocalyptic flick. That ending!
97% of this movie was very very slow paced, there is no conclusion, many questions with no answers...just dark drama, and very dark characters! I really wanted to like this movie, but its just not my cup of tea. 3/10
This movie is about very dark fears and actions... Intense, with good characters, well shot and acted. Thumbs up!
it does borrow a lot from The Walking Dead comics, but it does it well
I saw this with knowing much about it other than it had gotten some festival buzz. The marketing did seem a bit misleading - it implied something supernatural, but that never happened at all. In fact, frankly, it's not clear why night is dangerous at all, other than maybe it's easier to run into infected people?
Anyways, it's beautifully shot, but other than that it was a disappointment. I feel like the whole examination of "how people can behave and fall apart in close quarters after a post-apocalyptic event" thing has been done better many times before.
Some great camerawork and lighting. What comes at night, though?
Nothing! There are also no answers to the few questions you will have. No resolution, nothing.
It Comes At Night
A paranoid thriller. Oozing with tension and atmosphere. It stays with you in your head and gut.
8.5/10
#NicksMiniReview
This small post apocalyptic thriller is very dour, atmospheric and effective. It's got a great score and does a good job of building the tension. It smartly makes use of what is not seen and not explained to build the dread. The desperation of the characters feels realistically handled.
Better than expected. Not much of a big story when you think about it, but the atmosphere and acting do create an enjoyable experience. It's paranoia and horror with realism, and that works. Some say it's not horror. The situation is horrific in this movie, but it's not a horror based on expectations of the everyday audience. It's not for everyone. It could have done with more plot and some interesting ideas.
Some are dissapointed there wasn't some payload in the end. I don't know what they wanted. A monster? Zombie? That would have been against the realism. The ending was good for me. It keeps with the uncertainty, and is left open. I wouldn't watch it again though. Not much replay value.
It's not a Horror movie, not a drama, not an action, not emotional, and not a mystery movie and Nothing comes at night!..MAH
This movie builds and builds, without no frickin peak.
Joel Edgerton makes a impecable job in this movie. When it ended, I got really mad. A lot of questions was not answered (who opened the door, who dragged Stanley inside...), but when I saw some reviews, the end makes so much sense. Of course Travis dragged Stanley, that's how he got sick. He contaminated the rest of the crew. And what comes at night? His dreams. In the end, the movie deserves a 6,5.
A movie about trust, imagination and people doing everything to stay alive in an extraordinary situation! Did enjoy it! Don't expect a horror shocker movie though.
"It Comes at Night" is every sense of the word brilliant. Not your typical monster or trashy gore fest. Psychological and unsettling is more fitting. You barely know anything and that's the main horror behind it. The unknown and the darkness.

good psychological horror, with a lot of open endedness. if that's something you can enjoy, you'll like this movie! but if you go in expecting a lot of jump scares or gore you'll be disappointed because there's a minimum on both counts. i really liked the acting in this film, particularly christopher and kelvin! there is some intense humanity in their performances.
It NEVER comes at night. Never ever!
What a waste of an hour and a half of my life!
I don't remember why/that I watchlisted this one, but boy is it a downer. If you prefer slow phsychological horror over PEW PEW KILLER MURDERFACE horror, then I'd probably recommend it for the beatutful shots alone.
Absolute rubbish. A part of my life I wish I could get back !! Please don't waste your time
Can this movie be watched on firestick and which add on?
Well what is there to say here? First, this is not a horror movie by any stretch of the word.
With that in mind, it's pretty good. It's a slow, suspenseful, well done and pretty interesting movie. What makes the movie stand out for me is the characters. They just feel like real people. No bullshit, just regular people. Combine that with a sense of mystery over some of the characters and you have a pretty intriguing movie.
Sadly, the characters fall apart a little bit towards the end and falls into some very overused clichés, but it's forgivable in the light of things. Also the ending could have had more of an impact. It just kind of mellows out and then that's it. It feels somewhat odd, considering what has just transpired. I think I understand that they were going for, but I think it would have been better with more of a bang tbh. I'd definitely recommend this movie though, just make sure you know what you're going to see.
Tense, atmospheric, and slow burning.

Very misleading trailer and title. What comes at night? NOTHING!. Incredibly slow pace and I was glad it was over (as was everyone in the theatre).
