Made me dream, made me wonder, made me think. Great commentary on the path dependency of modern society, making a strong case to escape civilization and live life more freely and adventurous. Also a great reminder that "happiness is only real when shared".
Awe inspiring film. It makes me dislike big society and want to do the same.
Technically proficient presentation of a tedious story about a pretentious, privileged young man who has to die alone, horribly, to find the value of society.
Very atmospheric movie due to great cinematography and editing, it's really beautiful looking movie.
While indie, almost documentary-like style have its moment, overall it didn't work for me. Main character and consequently the plot seems privileged and pretencious, very 'teen-boy rebel phase' feel to it.
Great movie for enjoying atmosphere and cinematography but unfortunately not much else.
This was a beautiful movie. The ending was not expected... It was really a mixture of every mood. It makes you feel everything.
What did I think? I thought ‘Into The Wild’ was put together brilliantly. Visuals in a film always interest me more than anything, and so I felt like on cloud 9 watching this masterpiece.
It’s sometimes personal, then funny, then serious. Thankfully it avoids getting too deep and takes us on his unique adventure.
This is an interesting movie that is really not your typical Hollywood blockbuster cinema flick. This movie is slow paced, it takes a lot of time concentrating on small thinks and a number of things are not comming from acting but are conveyed to you by narration coming from offstage; thought that our main character has, while he is on his journey into the wild, which most of the time he is doing just by himself. Nothing for the mainstream audience, but if you are open to a slow-paced movie that makes you think alot, and that shows you great imagery of the scenery, with in the beginning absolutely no indication to where this movie is actually going to go, you'll be in for an interesting jorney.
The end is however the most interesting part; it is only in the last minutes that you start realizing to where this movie is going to go, and as you get there, everything is going really fast and it kind of suprised me a lot. I especially like the final realisation, this is an enormously great message that was worth the journey and that actually raised my ratings by one point (otherwise I'd have ended up 7/10 because of the lengthy parts inbetween).
The second surprise I was in for (I did not know anything about this movie beforehand), was that it is actually based on true events - this actually happend, and in hindside you start believing that this is actually with hardly any fictionallisation. My girlfriend actually knew this beforhand as she read the novel, and she said that this is a great adaptation which means a lot because she is often critical when it comes to movie adaptations of books. So if you read the book and enjoyed it, you'll probably enjoy this movie as well.
I noticed very quickly that this was gonna be a movie that would annoy the shit out of me. Not bad per se, but I guess a pretentious indie story about a dumb teenage boy, who thinks he’s better than everyone else, just isn’t my cup of tea.
really good movie about life. something i wanna try out to live in the wild
Amazing movie, this movie made think about everything, about happiness etc etc
best influential movie for me, that what I doing too
The most beautiful movie I've seen in a while. Made me cry the whole way. Beautiful BEAUTIFUL. Every character no matter how small, played a big part in this movie.
I didn't like the fact that he died but I know if he didn't die in real life, we never had the chance to watch this amazing movie. congrats on the family to let his memory live and inspire other.
Happiness is only real when shared - so true.
This movie makes me reflect about everything around me, and this have inspire me for live
Legitimately one the best movies you'll ever watch. Has a philosophical touch to it. Definitely deserves a higher rating.
I found this film pretentious and overlong. The direction used annoying gimmicks that distracted from the narrative (overlaid titles, pointless holds, etc). The narration from the sister also made me want to reach through the screen and slap her.
This is a classic case of the film let down by its own overly sincere approach. You do not root for anyone in this movie - at least, I didn't - and so I feel the film fails in its goal to lionise the actions of this foolish boy.
Still, Hal Holbrook is in it, and he is always superb.
Good movie... But the way he dies really upseted me
I could tell from the trailer that this was going to be a good movie. However I did not expect it to be as good as it was. the cinematography was masterfully done as the games just enough time to allow my mind to catch up with this taken all of the various subtle messages that were being sent in this film.
overall I would give this movie and 8 1/2 out of 10
This could've potentially been a really interesting drama, but the end result feels more like Terrence Malick worship made by someone who doesn't quite understand why those movies work. Throughout the film I get the feeling that Penn wants us to be on the side of the protagonist, which doesn't quite work when the character is written like a conceited undergrad stoner who just read some Karl Marx for the first time. We don't get a sense of the mental/physical struggle the character goes through, instead the tone has this feel-good, folksy quality showing some of the most beautiful landscapes that can be found in the US. His illegal actions are quickly brushed over, it doesn't delve into the sacrifices he's made, nor do I get enough of a sense about the psychological effect his decisions have on his family (every time it cuts back to his family with the narration by Jena Malone it feels quite pointless). The movie looks gorgeous, the grain and colour grade have a strong 70s feel to it. The songs by Eddie Vedder are also brilliant, I prefer this to a lot of his work with Pearl Jam. The problem is that every time Penn wants to blow our mind with the visuals or sonics, it misses the mark for me as there's no emotional weight coming from the film. Is it just meant to be a piece of adventure pulp, then? I don't think so, not with the 'happiness is only real when shared' note that Penn decides to leave the film on; a note that doesn't support much of the movie preceding it. The end result is this awkward, manipulative piece of cinema that at best could be described as a middlebrow crowdpleaser, but occasionaly pretends to be something more. No wonder IMDB loves it so much.
4/10
Baby Boy: Caucasian edition? The privilege.
Amazing movie. it is a must watch. makes you think and ponder. can't put this movie into words.
This is a movie I always knew existed and wanted to see, but never got around to it. I had listened to the remarkable soundtrack many times and knew what this was about, but it just slid by me. My movie club finally gave me the kick in the rear to appreciate this gorgeous film! Soundtrack is even more appreciated seeing the film and I was shocked to learn this was based on a true story!
Rating: 4/5 - 8.5/10 - Would Recommend
I found this film to be a testament to the life of an adventurer, who essentially was an independent mind that sought his own truth. In all honesty, I may not have agreed with any of Christopher's own prescriptions, but he was an honest human that wanted to be free and happy. The ending was certainly interpreted in many different ways, with some describing it as bleak, but most describe it as bleakly hopeful. I agree with the latter camp, which is why I respect this film so much. For people today who are on edge about viewing this film, it's great!
This movie blends a sense of quietness perfectly with a sense of adventure
I‘ve read John Krakauer‘s book a few years back and had planned to watch the film by Sean Penn for quite a while now. Now after having seen it I was definitely not disappointed. It is very well acted and is very true to the book as far as I can remember. The story itself captivated me again as it did when reading the book. I really also liked the soundtrack of the film. Great song choices.
Sean Penn adapts the adventures of Christopher McCandless, who left society behind to aimlessly roam the western United States, find himself and try his hand at a life off the land in the remote Alaskan wilderness. At first preachy and morose, there's a tipping point early in the picture where I couldn't help but feel something for McCandless and his misguided quest to subsist wholly on morals, philosophy and the kindness of strangers. Presented as a sort of messiah figure, this errant youth touches the lives of a broad range of individuals over the course of his travels, preaches the gospel of live-and-let-live and uncovers the difficulties associated with a tramp's lifestyle in a society so concerned with protecting its citizenry from themselves.
There's a lot to be learned from Christopher's path, both positive and negative, and Penn shies away from neither in this careful, convincing pseudo-documentary. It can be so enveloping at times that the sudden appearance of a recognizable actor or two along the way feels awkward and strange. A very solid effort with something to say, I only wonder if it may have been better served by a full cast of unknowns. Eddie Vedder's perfectly matched original soundtrack deserves a special mention.
I'm doing this since 2011.
But, I can't said that's a better life now.
It's a non-fiction film about the boy who was intelligent but not yet wise. The story is narrated by his sister whom he left at home so she couldn't know the whole prospect. When I listened to her version I felt lost because it came out that the main character left his hated parents to punish them. To a lesser extent to finish with their values and rules of their reality. So most of the time he wanted to prove something instead of live his own life. I like better to think there was something more in his journey than run away.
Great movie - worth taking the time to watch.
Casting, photography and wonderful soundtrack.
great adaption based on true story, lovely soundtrack. "my life is more existing when i'm penniless".
Everything is so amazing in this film, especially the songs.. eddie vedder put some really good words in his music..
