Can somebody go and check on Jared Leto?
His performance in this is so fucking funny to me, I’d be surprised if this isn’t a shoe-in for a Razzie nomination.
Every artistic choice this guy makes has to be the most overblown and ridiculous thing ever, whether that’s in his acting or his music.
I wonder if he’s still capable of delivering a good performance when he doesn’t get to hide behind make-up and eccentricities.
Not to say that the other actors are faring much better, pretty much everybody sounds like they’re doing a parody of an Italian accent, it sounds ridiculous.
Some sound like they’re trying to imitate Mario, it’s that classic “ah, mamma mia, pizzeria” shtick that everyone does when they make fun of Italians.
The only problem is: this isn’t a parody film, and the only actor that seems to get that to some extent is Adam Driver.
You’d assume that most of these conversations were in Italian in real life, so nobody would care if you’d ditch these accents in an English language film, because it isn’t going to be completely realistic anyway.
I just don’t get creative choices like this, especially from a legend like Ridley Scott, who seemed to understand this idea in his last film, which came out only 2 months ago.
As for the film itself, I’d advise anyone to simply pretend that this is meant to be a campy comedy, because it’s not that good as an Oscar drama.
Just watch Succession if this seems intriguing to you.
I almost fell asleep in the theater. 45 minutes too long. I love Lady Gaga, but I liked the scenes without her the best. Maybe it was her awful accent? Not sure. Adam Driver was good but couldn’t save it. 3/10.
Still trying to understand how they managed to put all this great actors together and make such a horrible movie. Too long and boring, still waiting for something to happen.
As an Italian I find that it is too stereotyped and some facts are changed since in reality they did not go that way.
If you are going to make a film about a true story, you should be dealing with the truth.
Adam Driver and Jeremy Irons were the best parts of this movie. Lady Gaga was all over the place, and Jared Leto was truly awful.
unfortunately i can't give a zero, so i'll give an one in honor of the cast
I wasn't so much interested in the story itself, it was the names that draw me into it. If one ever needs an example of what over-acting looks like - watch this movie.
Should've stopped after an hour. It's neither a good biopic nor a good crime story. I mean, the source material was there but Scott didn't get anything out of it in my opinion.
The one thing I really like are the looks of the movie. But it feels like getting an empy gift box.
Ignore the comments. This was a pretty good movie that moves fairly quickly and keeps the viewers interest. All performances shined and the touch of humour in the movie helped me like it even more. A great watch
The whole movie seems like a bad SNL parody. It was fucking terrible.
I can’t exactly pinpoint the thing that ruined the film for me, but I know it's not Gaga. I'm one of those people who always think films shouldn't be over 2 hours, so going into this I would have imagined it to be just a little complex. Turns out it feels like a 6 year old telling a true crime story. It's way too long yet some parts feel rushed. It keeps moving from point to point with no depth. I'm fine with over-the-top acting and purposefully bad accent. The thing is it would've been enjoyable in a film with much shorter runtime, it became insufferable in a lengthy film like this. Also I can't stand Jared Leto. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re a fan of these actors.
I dunno, I expected something else. the movie was absolutely uninteresting and boring to watch. I knew the Gucci story through so many podcasts and couldn't wait to watch this. especially for the cast. the humor was not my taste here. would love to have it more serious. maybe I resell my blu-ray disc.
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring AF. I love Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, etc etc. But OMG I could not finish this movie. Life is too precious to waste on garbage like this. I also must criticize Gaga on dancing like Gaga in some of the scenes; nobody danced like that back then; as far as I know; since her dancing style is very unique. Better luck next time. But I would completely pass on this snoozefest.
Beyond awful. Offensively so. Like an unfunny parody.
The plot and the narrated real story are for sure the best thing of this film, they would spark at least some interest to find out more about, and they seem quite accurate. Not so the acting, which I found really terrible. Lady Gaga was not bad, and for that specific role that caricature could have been appropriate. The rest of the cast sounded ridiculous, I could not understand the choice of using a very accented and unnatural English, instead of directly a subtitled Italian. Moreover, some characters were poorly casted, for instance Paolo was out of character.
Knowing it was an American production I was not expecting that much, and a lot of spectacularization, but still I was looking forward to seeing some documentary on the historical events. The latter was somehow there, the rest was missable.
Just go and read Tom Ford's opinion on the film to get the definitive review. Unfortunately, it's not even as campy as the trailer suggested. It's just a tediously boring biopic that puts facts without offering any new interpretation or exploring the characters’ motivations. It all seems to be finalized to point out that the Gucci family lost its empire due to their dishonesty and ineptitude, just to rely on the same old Italian stereotypes.
Except for Leto's absolutely embarrassing performance, the rest of the cast could have been good for the part. Too bad that they had them go over the top and imitate the Italian accent at all costs. There are surreal moments where the few Italian extras are doing their best to hide their accents next to Gaga or Leto doing the Super Mario voice ("It's me, Paolo!" God, he actually says that more than once). Adam Driver ended up pretty stiff on the contrary. But that's really all I have to say about the film; the rest is just a snoozefest trainwreck with some delicious campy moments hidden in between.
idk what everyone is talking about. this movie was good.
Was a good movie but it was also a bit long. I think it will get nominated for a few Oscar's. The accents didn't bother me that much.
the first act of the film (60+ minutes) could've easily been a 30-second montage. really boring and I still feel a lot has been cut from it, because the story seemed to randomly jump around and skip crucial parts of the plot.
Good entertainment. Had no idea about history of Gucci. Patarizia did a number on the family, what a twat. And the Saudi’s, never trust them, back stabbers.
But I guess at the end, privileged kids always end up ruining the family business.
More like House of Really bad accents, amirite? https://boxd.it/2Gq5DX
In one scene, Rodolfo Gucci calls his nephew Paolo incompetent for mixing "browns and pastels" in a design. This is a mixed "browns and pastels" movie, undefined in its conception as a satire of fashion or a soap opera family drama, full of absurd characters with absurd and different Italian accents (Jeremy Irons is the only one who refuses to adopt that accent), between actors who have fun and actresses who take themselves too seriously. "Never confuse shit with cioccolato. Both are brown, but the taste is very different."
The Italian "accents" are a weird creative choice but for me that didn't take away from the movie too much. Good movie, not great but also not that bad
Was the accent necessary? The story is interesting and the acting was not all that bad but was the Italian accent necessary???? These characters originally speak Italian so if they are going to have English speaking actors portray them, why not just speak regular English (or for most of these actors American English). It makes no sense
My first question is, who thought this story needed to be told? And who thought it needed to be told in 2 hours and 37 minutes?
The acting here is fine. Everyone puts on their best fancy clothes and fake accents. Lady Gaga does an admirable job bringing intensity to an otherwise empty storyline. I still can't believe that she thought that she might win an award for this role - there just isn't enough there. I rarely say that a movie is boring but this one is an exception. It very much felt like a Lifetime movie that you might see on a saturday afternoon. This may have played better as a docuseries than a movie.
Pacino and Leto on the plus side, the rest of the movie is rather a curiosity for fans of the brand.
Hmmmmmm I'm still deciding how I feel about this one
She knew that he was going to become rich
Although it's duration is a bit much, i liked it. Lady Gaga is an evil goddess. :)
Lady Gaga looks much better with few kg/lbs more !! Imho woman's must be a bit curved - of course I don't mean fat - just like Gaga!
Verry good movie, real and perfect 100% entertainment. One to der Top.
Overhyped garbage that didnt need to be or was asked to be made.
More like 'House of Goofy'
Jared Leto was entertaining though. Driver and Gaga were also good.
Interesting and comical. Excellent acting on all fronts. I have one gripe which is that the entire movie was filmed/edited with a grey shadow cast over it, making everything dark which seemed to be a purposeful decision. I did not like this. Facial expressions were hard to read and even in a cinema I felt like I was squinting the entire time. Giving it crisp 21st century clarity would have made it more enjoyable.
I think one thing we all should do is to never read reviews before watching something and not read them as long as we have not made up our minds on the film. I had the chance to watch this in its original version, not dubbed, in our local cinema, but I did not take it as I had read some negative reviews. A mistake. Now I watched the dubbed version, because I simply felt like going out, and I loved it. The vibe, the clothes, the music - Bravissimo :champagne:
I really enjoyed this film. I think I could watch Lady Gaga acting all day long. And this is really the best thing about this movie. The brilliant acting performances. Don‘t get me wrong, the story was also really interesting and the cinematography was great too. So overall a really good movie that never get‘s boring despite it‘s long runtime.
Great acting, but the acting is too good you kinda wanna kill the mainkaren
An ambition that grew over time, even for those who seemed not to have it. A journey through the years that portrays the debacle of a marriage. More than the Gucci House, the film talks about the Gucci-Reggiani marriage. Without a doubt, Lady Gaga, Adam Driver and Al Pacino stand as the stars of the film, despite criticism of Gaga's Italian-Russian accent. All three present studied and understood characters, with nuances that allow the viewer to feel captivated. In contrast, Jared Leto's cartoonish performance broke the rhythm in all of his appearances, with a comedy that I didn't understand if it happened unintentionally, and that's why it feels out of place, or pushed in, and therefore doesn't feel genuine. Either way, it didn't work. The art direction seemed very appropriate, obviously favoring costume design, but with successes also in makeup and hairdressing. The musical selection with a lot of pop takes the scenes to the present time and they are enjoyed if you are a fan of that genre. Despite its two hours and 38 minutes, it did not feel long. But there was something that distracted me all the time, besides Jared Leto: the diversity of accents. I didn't understand why Lady Gaga had such a strong accent, while Adam Driver didn't, or why Jared Leto's accent didn't sound like Lady Gaga's; furthermore, why try to make them sound Italian when the movie is spoken in English, and why add Italian phrases here and there when the rest of the dialogue is in English? That was something that didn't make sense to me and was distracting. With right and wrong, watch it if you are interested in gossip from the fashion world.
A good movie with its fair share of flaws. All of which can be forgiven when you compare them to Leto’s ridiculous Italian accent.
It was always going to end in designer tears.
I quite enjoyed this movie, the acting was on point, I was afraid that the fake Italian accent might be bothering, but it didn’t, just in some moments when I felt an inconsistency in Al Pacino’s accent, The shooting angles were exceptional in some moments especially at the beginning of the film, the music was alright in the majority of the time I just felt a little awkwardness in the wedding scene when that song started playing as I felt it wasn’t matching with how the track of event is going, Jared Leto was exceptional in his role, I liked Adam Driver as well, but that wasn’t a surprise as he’s one of the most talented actors of his generation, Lady Gaga was surprisingly convincing in her role and was able to keep up with Driver and Leto, but I must say Al Pacino was my biggest disappointment in this movie, his inconsistency was just annoying at times, I only felt that he was actually doing his job in the scene where his son told him that he sold his shares The movie was 158 minutes, but I did not feel boredom at all. In general, it was an enjoyable movie I wouldn’t be surprised if it got a couple of Oscar nominations
You understand why Ridley Scott says Lady Gaga's accent is fine when you hear Leto speak his first line. Nobody told Pacino this was a comedy and it rocks
I just hope, she won't fall in love with Adam like she did with cooper last time..lol
Feel like the material is really too much for a movie, even it's a 2h40 movie. It would be much better suited for a 6 or 8 episodes limited series. Like American Crime Story: Assassination of Versace. But I guess you can't call it American Crime story since it's happened in Italy.
Even it's a long movie, you can feel many places are kinda rushed.
In general, I enjoyed it, the story itself is fascinating, and the cast is amazing. Gaga is on fire, with her many golden lines. My favorite one was when she consoled Paola and asked her staff to get her out of her place right away. :joy: Savage!!! But i'm also quite disappointed the movie didn't include Patrizia's most famous quote "It's better to cry in Rolls Royce than to be happy on a bicycle."
I don't care what anyone thinks, Gaga did an amazing job at portraying Patrizia. Now, I don't know what was going on with Leto, but considering he has a pretty deserved Oscar under his belt, this role truly was something else. His over-the-top accent and mannerisms will haunt me till the day I die.
kind of messy and boring... but I had fun
- it seems that the film has a lot of things to show but it gets too lost in the construction: at first I had the impression that the focus would be totally and absolutely on the couple formed by Patrizia and Maurizio, the film doesn't even mention the history of the brand, it doesn't contextualize anything..... already in the final half hour the brand reappears FROM BEYOND and the dialogues are based on Gucci's own business and Lady Gaga's character does not appear for a while, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO HOUSE OF GUCCI?
- but let's be honest, the movie is fun, it will probably amuse you (even if it's hugely big)
- Lady gaga is very well as Patrizia, full of personality, strong, powerful, I loved her!! I can't say the same about jared leto's clumsy, clueless acting...for God's sake, every second he appeared I rolled my eyes harder, a performance that for me was extremely forced and irritating
- Al Pacino is amazing along with Jeremy Irons and Adam Driver...hm ok, I've seen better of him but it's ok
- it's worth watching, but don't expect anything grand or out of the box
This movie would have benefited from a lot more Lady Gaga and a lot less Gucci.
What do I need to say about this one. Stopped watching this, why do people even like lady tralalala . This is poor in every single thing you see. Do not waste a single minute on this not even if you like Gucci. If you like Lady tralala you have no taste at all
Very mixed feelings about the movie. At times it feels very interesting anchored by the actors but at the same time the characters feel shallow. It feels like to movie does not make use of it's longer run time. Whilst Jared Leto delivers a fairly good performance, it feels like he is in another movie compared to the rest of the cast. Amongst the star studded cast, the standout despite his limited screentime for me was Jack Huston.
Score: 6/10
Mario brothers are more authentic Italian than these nincompoops.
'House of Gucci' makes for good viewing.
I enjoyed the performances of Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, with the former being the film's best in my opinion - she is two for two now after 'A Star Is Born', so I'm keen to see what she produces for 'Joker: Folie à Deux'.
The rest of the cast are also very good, whether it be Al Pacino or Jeremy Irons... Jack Huston and even Jared Leto are solid as well. Well done casting. I found this 158 minute flick to have positive pacing, the film doesn't necessarily fly by but it does keep flowing along nicely.
I, however, didn't like the music, there are some strange choices in there which I don't think quite fit the vibe of the film. It also felt odd a few times to have everyone speaking English with accents, especially when in Italy. I also would've liked more regular notices of location/year of certain scenes, not that it was hard to figure out but a few scenes, despite being set elsewhere/at another time, felt mashed into one sometimes.
Those negatives aren't major ones, though, as I did get the required entertainment from this Ridley Scott film.
Lady Gaga was extraordinary. The casting was really good.
The script seemed pretty good but the story spent way too much time on minutia and not enough, or not an even amount, on details that seemed more pertinent. Like the affair, how it started, how long it dragged on, the interactions of how that began seem to be where the thread was pulled causing it eventually to all fell apart. Yet this was breezed through like an after thought.
The worst of it was for the first 45-60 minutes the filming was atrocious. It looked like a kid did the lighting and screenshot layouts, not anything the caliber you expect from Ridley Scott. I'm not surprised some people said they got bored and didn't bother after that.
Really a 6-6.5 except for the great performances by Gaga and Driver.
She came, she saw, and she tore it all a part.
Good if you like history pieces. The drama part could have been better.
No Gucci in Gucci. Family businesses after several generations are what they have.
About the movie... too long didn't finish.
Despite the criticism, Jared Leto is the best thing about this overlong and sometimes dull drama. He adds some much needed levity and for that, I am grateful for him.
Accents came and went. Lots of star cast members, no star performances. Quite long for not having an amazing story. Pleasant enough to kill time watching it on a plane though
The Gucci family cast was great but the story dropped significantly in the last act.
This could be one of Ridley Scott's best movies but it didn't reach its potential like most of his films.
I was interested to see this movie, especially with the star power thrown at it. I guess I was hoping it would get a little into the fashion side of things but alas the movie about “the house of Gucci” really has not one little smidge about the fashion. It ended up being an over dramatic parody of itself. Too bad.
I love Gaga, but hers and other characters looked like overly exaggerated cartoon versions, but taking that away it's very entertaining and visually tremendous.
I didn't like it very mucci.
Watching Adam Driver act is all I need from any film and that Lady Gaga could keep up with him says a lot about her chops.
But...
Jared Leto should've let his makeup do the heavy lifting, because his over-the-top garishness was more distracting than a boar in a toupee.
As for the story, I'm not a fashionista, don't care about haute couture and the suspense here was nothing more than a disorganized crime family saga.
Still, if you like Succession or high fashion, you already have a head start on me. At it is, 8th Grade is still my favorite Gucci movie.
Review by SkinnyFilmBuffVIP 8BlockedParent2022-02-07T19:05:36Z
I want to preface my review by acknowledging that I am definitely not the target audience of this film. I don't know that I've ever even seen a Gucci product, let alone purchased one, and I certainly didn't have any interest in the history of the brand. I watched this as a fan of Ridley Scott, Adam Driver, and Lady Gaga (who I have been excited to see expand her filmography after really enjoying A Star is Born (2018)).
When I reviewed King Richard a couple of months back, I pointed out two consistent issues that I have with movies based on true stories: (1) minor knowledge of the true story can make the movie feel predictable or even boring; and (2) those elements of the movie that do manage to surprise, often raise alarm bells as I instinctively assume that they are the result of creative liberties or embellishment. Luckily, House of Gucci suffered from neither of these problems. Unluckily, it raised a far more fundamental issue: sometimes true stories just don't translate into compelling films. To illustrate this point with a hypothetical, if a screenwriter set out to write a fictional film about the drama of a wealthy fashion family, I don't think the final product would look anything like House of Gucci. Without the restrictions of the real world, there would be more drama, more conflict, more substance. What we got instead, was over two and half hours of inoffensive but unexciting relationship drama that feels better suited to a simple Wikipedia article than it does to a Ridley Scott directed film.
Despite this quite significant critique, the movie is still entirely watchable. While I can't speak to the authenticity of the Italian accents, none of the performances stuck out in a negative way and the production design and costumes were excellent to my admittedly fashion-illiterate eyes. As one final point of interest, while watching the movie I would have bet the farm that the eccentric, balding Paolo Gucci was played by Jeffrey Tambor. To say that I was surprised when I learned that it was in fact Jared Leto (presumably under a metric ton of makeup), would be a massive understatement.
