Regina Hall elevates everything she’s in.

Sterling K Brown and Regina Hall absolutely kill it in this cutting, biting dark satire. Brown is a buffoon, a predator, and a charismatic preacher, often all at once, but he never loses sight of the pathetic core of his character. And Hall's simmering for the entire film, little spurts of emotion she can't hold back, until it all explodes.  Plus, two movies with Nicole Beharie, back to back! Put her in all the things! It's a daring debut for the director, taking on the hypocrisy and deep harm these churches can do.

I was afraid this would be blasphemous but it's mercifully targetted at the hypocrisy of religion rather than the Christian faith of believers.

Didn’t like the ending it kind of left me hanging

Regina Hall is a star—comedic timing, intense eye acting, body language, she was giving it all she got and deserves more roles. Her co-lead, Sterling K. Knight was terrifyingly electric(the underhanded, deadeyed yet frantic energy his character exudes is insane, and idk the brother but yeah imma still say it: he would be a scary ass politician so thank him for choosing TheArts(shout out to This Is Us fr). The actors did their thing indeed.

Other than that, this film doesn’t have a lot of high points.

The plot is nothing new but there was still an opportunity to deliver something fresh and intriguing but instead, it seemed the filmmakers didn’t or couldn’t lean into the darker and more cutting aspects of the subject matter, which is a shame. A tighter script that included a little more edge, comedy and nuance, would’ve made a fascinating satire, instead of a tired take on an important issue.

Overall, it came off watered down and empty.

2/5
