I mean, really, what a cast! Karen Gillian! Lena Headey! Michelle Yeoh! Angela Bassett! Serious butt kicking action ladies! The premise is somewhere between KILL BILL and Film Noir (without the voice over). Life is cheap, violence is the norm, one girl can take out 29 heavily armed men. The whole film is hyperbolic, the mood is darkly humorous. A good way to waste some time not thinking. I give the film a 7(good) out of 10. [Action]
Come on son! Amy Pond, Sarah Connor, Spy Kids Mom, Tina Turner, and Emperor Georgiou, take on the menfolk ala "Shoot Em' Up, and "Smoking Aces" having a baybay. Not meant to be cerebral and over analyzed, but a manifest celebration of feminine badassery. Yes the bad guys were inept, as the only casualty on the female side was clearly the result of a lucky shot, (and a surprising lack of body armor in an otherwise awesomely stocked armory), But, then, even Bruce Lee's opponents surrounded him in a circle and came at him one at a time. Honorable, yes, but madly inefficient.
In any case, this was a fun, entertaining watch, and, Chloe Coleman is a delight as "8 and 3/4" year old Emily, the flashpoint of all this chaos and conflict. Nothing that hasn't been done before, but, still, a nice take on the genre. They could possibly get a sequel out of it if they really wanted to, and, I'd be down for that one also.
@Callum - To paraphrase Dr. Raymond Stantz, "...You never studied"..., Those who are comparing "Gunpowder Milkshake" to the "John Wick" trilogy aren't saying it's a shot for shot comparison, or even a stylistic doppelganger, but, they ARE similar in world building, in that BOTH movies feature an underworld organization, with a hierarchy, rules, and regulations, which if violated, will earn one a visit from one (or in this case several dozen) highly trained, variously skilled, assassins, who will "balance the ledger" with your blood, bowels, and/or a bullet to the dome. What GM did that JW didn't, is to juxtapose the Peckinpah-esque (that's slo-mo, for those in Rio Linda) carnage and bloodletting, with a wry bit of levity, and to break up the somber situations with comedic beats on occasion.
Thus you have bits like the "Rag Doll" sequence, which was IMO hilariously done, yet JUST plausible enough that it could work. (no, stainless steel medical trays won't stop bullets any better than a car door, but that hasn't stopped countless hero's from hiding behind them in EVERY gun driven movie, EVER) But it was FUN, as was the Bowling Alley sequence, or the laundry room escape. In fact, if you look at most of the positive comments, they include the word "FUN".
You see, with what at times feels like the majority of the world being "woke", seemingly pissed off at anyone and everyone not affiliated with their particular "tribe", or insisting that YOU should be equally pissed off, socially stagnated, and intolerant, not to mention the unchecked romper stompering by feral humanoids that has infected cities nationwide like the T-Virus on steroids, sometimes, the remedy (at least for me) is a couple of hours of diversion in the form of some cinematic FUN. There of course is always a place for the cerebral and analytical, but that's not what this movie was going for. With age comes wisdom, and I have wisely learned that just because something does not fit my particular tastes or expectations, doesn't necessarily make it "bad", just not for me.
Watching a movie for the soundtrack is like going to see "Cats" because you're a veterinarian... Just sayin....
Great cast with cliche cheesy boring plot. Expected so much more after watching the trailer. Mostly style over substance. Could have been funnier. Huge opportunity missed! :disappointed_relieved:
Surprised by the high rating. Barely mediocre. Subpar writing. Lame characters. Unsatisfactory & unbelievable combat. Definitely a “straight to video” release from a nobody director. Horrible soundtrack, doesn’t fit the scenes at all
I couldn’t finish the first 20 minutes of it. That’s how bad Gunpowder Milkshake is. I feel horribly embarrassed for the people who made it. How did it pull in so many big names? I usually avoid the content that Netflix produces since they’re rarely any good, but I thought this movie might have some promise. Damn, was I wrong. The fact that people will be tricked into thinking this is halfway decent because of all the pretty faces and Netflix ‘feminism’ makes me feel physically ill.
This is just John Wick if you gender swapped it. Movies like Nobody (2021), Tenet, are for American men to have some material to masturbate to Americans killing Russians because their dog died. Totally normal male behavior. But Gunpowder Milkshake is for the American ladies, the liberal ‘feminists’ that love the depthless theme "women great, men bad", which is reductive and gets us nowhere but apparently it’s progressive. This one is for you, babes, enjoy!
Literally the line: "Gender equality. Very progressive. A feminist." They legit call the main character a smart, strong and independent woman unironically. Can you go more corny than that? It's a movie where all the women can do no wrong, are intelligent and also super human. You never feel like the main character is in danger cause none of the cartoonish men can even come close to her abilities. Honestly, the men in this film are dumb to a point where it's like the guys from Home Alone. Hollywood script writers FINALLY need to learn you can have awesome female character without having to make all of the male characters braindead idiots. Also, they need to stop this trope where skinny women fight and overpower multiple men who are 3 times their own body weight.
There are lots of “jokes” in this movie that are not funny at all but I LOLed at the casting - 47-year-old Lena Headey being the mother of 33-year-old Karen Gillan haha. So funny. Karen Gillan simply doesn't have the presence to pull this role off, I didn't believe she was a badass assassin just because she looks mean. I hope I will never ever have to hear her American accent again, it sound like she’s swallowing the middle of every word. Why hire so many British actors if you’re going to make them use American accents? They sound horrible. American liberal feminists love the intersectional feminist cast - this movie feature blatant racial tokenism with the black woman being angry, and the Asian woman who is a mystical martial-arts expert, of course.
The whole “female empowerment” trope is painfully undeveloped and just thrown in the most shallow, generic way. All style, no substance. Weak story (that's barely a 20 minute short story), some of the most poorly written characters I’ve ever seen, and a bunch of dead-eyed performances from some famous actresses.
Never once veers from 100% predictability.
The script is so juvenile not even actors way above class for this kind of movie can deliver lines convincingly and the jokes mostly just fall completely flat.
Everybody in Hollywood steals and borrows but in this you can point out the exact feature the scenes are from, it's like they just used cut and paste of the exact same storyboard.
It's not influenced by or an homage to, it's just plagiarism to the point of it being completely ridiculous.
If you intend to watch this, set your expectations really, really low.
Girl power! Or something, I guess.
Fun watch, in the ridiculously over-the-top kind of way. Definitely worth the watch.
all women are good, all men are evil scumbags. whats more generic 2021 WOKE movie than that. its very very predictable from start to finish. you could easily even predict the lines the actresses would say before they do.
Some of you have never seen Kill Bill and it shows!
This was a poor attempt at a Kill Bill movie. The score being the worst part
Regular scene, slow motion scene. Rinse and repeat.
Didn’t like it much. Watch a John Wick or Nobody instead
An absolutely amazing cast. I have been putting off watching this because it sounded stupid and the trailer wasn't exactly great. I'm glad I finally got around to watching it because it is amazingly quirky, wonderful dialogue, perfect atmosphere, fabulous set design, and lovely acting.
Oscar material? No. Entertaining as hell? Yes.
more 'Groan Chick' than 'John Wick'.
Great cast & line-up squandered on a very mediocre script, with attempts to sell "woke feminism" - I kid you not, no less than 3 mentions - than actually letting female protagonists be more than Snyder-type shallow caricatures.
Each of these women have played strong, independent female characters with agency in the past, so we know they're competent & capable, but I don't know wtf happened here.
Wick has a certain rhythm, pace & style - that this is an obvious cargo-cult copy of.
(that "something" Birds of Prey & the last Ghostbusters found, but Oceans' missed too)
Had so hoped this would've been something more than sad tropes with misplaced filler.
Think I'll go watch Atomic Blonde as a palette-cleanser.
B movie that was cringy in spots and a lot of fun in others. Leave brain at door and enjoy yourself. You'll know right away if this is the type of movie for you. 5.8 for me (rounds up to 6 and I consider a 6 a "good" movie. Or if not good in the traditional sense, a fun movie.) Some consider 5-6 a poor score.
Some fun kills both slo-mo and reg speed. I enjoy the style of these, but the dialogue could get real bad in spots and the two hours did feel longer than it needed to. Gillan did a good job.
This feels like it was written in a board room by marketing executives.
"What's hot right now? Girl power?" Sure, let's make a movie about girls kicking ass! With lots of guns and slow-mo action and neon colors!
"Should we hire female writers and a female director too?" Hahahaha, good one Johnson. No, we need to keep that feminism to a surface level.
Brainstorm time, what are some cool words? "Milkshake!" Sure why not? "Gunpowder!" Fuck yeah! "But why milkshakes?" Uh, cause they meet up in one of those 50's diners, those are pretty sweet right? It's like a magical diner in the middle of nowhere where guns aren't allowed except when they are allowed.
Get ready, I'm about to blow your minds. What if their headquarters is a library, but it's a gun library? Hell yeah! No, dummy, I'm not just describing a gun depot. You see, it looks like a regular library but there are guns hidden in the books and stuff.
This was such a waste of a talented cast. And although there are a few good ideas and fun moments sprinkled throughout the movie, they just get lost in a sea of dumb.
it's just refreshing to see an action movie with a different type of main cast for a change. i really enjoyed this. it was fun, over-the-top and didn't take it self to seriously. give me pretty decent fight scenes, gay subtext and hot older women fighting and i am sold.
Good movie, very entertaining. Sets itself up for a chapter 2.
I saw a lot of comparisons to John Wick but this doesn't come close to that or even Nobody, but it did give me a few chuckles that probably weren't intended so there's that lol.
Loved it. it's a Jane Whick type of movie. If you like action movies give it a shot.
There's a stereotype that campy crime, especially with a high amount of violence, is a man's movie. If this has been an all male cast? I'm betting way more 9 than 7. Star studded cast, because more and more women want these hero/anti hero roles.
It's not Oscar material, but it's entertaining as hell with a strong female cast with a strong pro female message. Doctor Who fans will probably love it. Amy Pond back and kicking butt.
A great star studded cast for this, the story was really not that great though.
Heavy on graphic violence, light on plot development. A film you can text through and not feel like you missed anything. Too bad, because the cast is a great lineup.
I loved the cast of this film, and there are some pretty fun action scenes...but it felt a bit "stuck" at times, almost like it was a pilot for a show instead of a standalone film. There are parts of the plot and world that didn't feel fully fleshed out, or that seemed cribbed from other films (:asterisk_symbol:cough:asterisk_symbol:JohnWick:asterisk_symbol:cough:asterisk_symbol:). Setting that aside, however, I really enjoyed this for what it was--a not too serious action flick with a solid cast. Keep your expectations in check and you'll dig it.
This movie is amazing. Gives you what you'd expect from a quality action movie HIGH ENERGY, EXPLOSIVE ACTION DRAMA. There's even some comedy thrown in.
Well, this was surprisingly entertaining
Another Netflix "movie of the week". Visually impressive, story a bit basic, execution competent but not spectacular, lacks a whole lot of soul ...
This one is a one-trick pony and it uses that trick a dozen times.
It ain't Kill Bill. Its not even superior to the much cheaper Kate Beckinsale film that was out a few months ago... "Crank with adrenaline and anger" or whatever that was called.
It's a solid 10 minutes too long.
Shame - the mostly (older) female cast and a really solid list of actors it is... It's a shame as they deserved better. Only a few of these opportunities come their way these days that it's a shame the impact of the film isn't stronger.
6.5/10
The cinematography on this is fantastic! What a work of art!
I don’t see that all too often in practically comedy pieces. Subtle, smart humour in this one too, beautiful.
The car chase with the girl was great. And what a library, such a beautiful and great place. Not to mention the library fight! Love the mention of women who run with wolves.
Besides being a beautiful library with beautiful books and people, GOSH have you seen those WEAPONS?! I’m in love
Do I even have to mention that fighting choreography?
To end it with something nice…
“Can’t think of anyone I’d rather kill with”
Unfortunately this is what we get by allowing Netflix to produce movies. Totally wasted top cast on rubbish story.
I liked it. It was funny. And being a bookworm, I loved the library.
too many of you guys are coming on here crying and complaining about a movie that was meant to be as silly as this was. get your thumbs out your butt and just enjoyed the craziness of it all. this movie was pretty good. it's not meant to be a masterpiece or a copy of kill Bill or John wick like you clowns keep saying. it's his own little parody of all those action flicks. smh.
was looking forward to this movie, but now I'm very disappointed. the action scenes are not good, you can see some effort there, but not nearly enough of it, plot and locations are terrible. on top of it there's the awkward 4th wave feminist vibe where all important female protagonist are mowing down the male cannon fodder like nothing, contrary to it's agenda it relies on stereotypes heavily (nice beautiful capable stylish protagonist slaughtering armies of ugly henchmen who are incompetent and are dying like flies. if you want a fun shoot em up - give Guns Akimbo a try, but feel free to skip this one and save your self 2 hours of life.
Meh! Tired after a long day at work this is a movies to just turn off your brain with mindless action. Not the worst movie of 2021. Watchable.
The title does not deceive, this is a milkshake of styles, references and aesthetics for an action film and female empowerment (written from a male point of view). But it is as empty as it is superficially attractive. Although it tries to find a different way to visualize the fights (the main element of the film) it feels too choreographed. A kind of "Kill Bill" (Quentin Tarantino, 2003) passed through the mixer.
This was simply a lot of fun. There are a lot of fun exciting action sequences. The addition of the 8 year-old girl, excuse me, I mean 8 and 3/4 year-old girl was great. She was a great foil for Gillan to play off of.
There are 3 action scenes I really liked for different reasons. 1) what I call the rag-doll fight 2) the garage car-chase (with the girl helping to drive) and 3) the final fight in the Diner.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
it was better than i expected great cast good action film
This movie was everything I hoped it would be! What a fun romp indeed...And, in my opinion, a great combination of John Wick and Kill Bill with an amazing cast.
Definitely some overlooked issues for a high production film, but overall not a bad movie. Cheesy small references (the milk, the "no women no children", the book names), funny jokes, lots of cry-inducing loving moments, drama, and unrealistic badass fight scenes while lightly promoting the idea of badass women. Overall a good watch and one I'd recommend if someone needed movie, but not "classic" status worthy unless you really hang on to the feminist meaning behind it.
People that are comparing this to John Wick need to go back and watch John Wick. This doesn't even come close.
Seeing as we're comparing to John Wick (not sure why as it's not the first film of its kind), I'll say this is easily better. If for no other reason than Karen Gillan really elevates the film and makes her character compelling. It isn't without flaws but at least there's some structure and cohesion, rather than just a lifeless dude popping heads for hours.
Another fine example of that time with Netflix bombarding us with movies which would have been on the bottom self of your local video club.
A bad wannabe Kill Bill or Tarantino movie, with loud music on every gunfight which lasts about 40 minutes in the end, lots of slow motion, nothing interested on the script or story. The gunfights were normal no extraordinary or you will remember next day. A totally mediocre straight to DVD movie (i'm that old).
Film 123 (Goal: 300) of 2024:
This was a tough one, as there are moments of this film that are so great - mainly the doctor's office fight. And the female cast is top tier, between Gillian, Headley, Gugino, and especially Yeoh and Bassett. But there are so many moments that just drag. Gillian tries her best, often bringing back glimpses of the toughness shown in her MCU Nebula portrayal and despite the wonderful cast playing off her, the threat is empty.
And while there are moments in the fight scenes that are great, there are so many moments that are heavily choregraphed to the point that they look like motions without any impact. The most egregious of these being the bowling alley scene, which while at times is creative, just feels like rhythm dancing.
Gunpowder Milkshake is another one of these new John Wick-lite films. It's a little bit of Wick, some Atomic Blonde, some Gun Akimbo, and a good portion of Shoot Em Up. I greatly disliked Shoot Em Up, and while this is better and watching these women lead an action piece is great (because they are fantastic when given the chance), the film never gets out of second gear. And when it flirts with the idea, it often drags backwards, rather than forwards.
Great cast, setting had potential and initially it's funny and entertaining enough.
But once when they unite and escape to the library it lost any appeal the movie had.
The movie is a bit of a mix between Kill Bill and Hanna.
Well... not the best ever, but pretty decent. Watching Karen Gillan for nearly 2 hours is of course a nice treat. Too bad Freya Allan doesnt have a bigger role in it, that would have been even better :)
Overal it's extremely predictable, but still well done. A very decent near-2 hours of popcorn entertainment.
Enjoyable film with a badass female cast kicking the males butts. Plot line was cheesy but still enjoyable.
Want a fun watch for nothing to serious this is for you.
Gunpowder Milkshake is a fun and exciting action-comedy. When an assassin accidentally kills the son of a Russian mob boss and goes rogue to save a kidnapped child, her company gives her up, leaving her to fend for herself against the Russian mob. Starring Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh, and Paul Giamatti, the film has a strong cast. Gillan especially does a great job at delivering the comedy, as well as some dynamic fight scenes. Also, the soundtrack is remarkably well-done and helps to set a lighthearted tone and enhances the action sequences. Full of thrills, Gunpowder Milkshake is tremendously entertaining.
I didn't understand John Wick, I don't understand this film (which I thought it was better than JW), but I guess it's some kind of new type of action pieces where your brain needs to be on holiday to fully enjoy them. I can appreciate great special effects, great soundtrack, great scenography, but it's just not my cup of tea.
I went into this very excited. I left a little blah. Fantastic cast and a fun story line. Pretty decent action shots and just enough blood to keep me interested. Nothing super new or exciting. A couple of standout performances to balance out the underwhelming many. And most irritating: there's an awful lot of anti-white male crap going on. Come on Netflix.
It is what I expected. Wanton violence and destruction with a darkly comical undertone. It featured some kick ass females that don't back down. I found a good mix between Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction. The background music was pretty fun as well.
There were a few fight scenes where the film editing wasn't very well done and some acting issues, but it is a great movie to put on when you just want to see some violence without having to think too much.
Like most movies today, it's too long. 90 mins are perfect.
Brilliant visuals and music...little else.
Gunpowder Milkshake had potential, but lacklustre execution, and a cookie cutter story, makes it...nothing special.
Besides...it's a bit preachy, and I hate that.
Though, Karen Gillan was a highlight...as she usually is.
The film’s not without style but the script isn’t great and some of the action scenes don’t really work. Personally, I prefer a strawberry milkshake!
Movies like this one make me angry. It's a waste of good actors, good songs, money and everyone's time. Do. not. watch.
I couldn't tell if it was bad acting or it was how the film was made but defo rings more on a cheap film trying to be other films with a good cast and some cool action and yeah they was some good moments and bad ones and wasn't boring and kept me hooked till start to finish.
Screenplay is awful. Very dumb movie, so childish. Lost of time.
star studded B tier kooky action flick
It was entertaining. There were a few truly beautiful moments, for example, wounded Madeleine, covering the red stain on her blouse in a futile attempt to retain her impeccable look of confidence and control.
However, I find the whole women vs men premise to be way to straightforward, outdated and anti-feminist underneath.
Great actresses and good script. Didn't like the filters though. They gave Angela Bassett orange skin, which was disappointing because she has absolutely beautiful skin. And the blood was too bright red and even sometimes blue.... why do the filters like this? If they're trying to be like Kill Bill then it was a fail. Also the diversity in actors was low. Most of the men were white.... it was an OK film that had the potential to be better.
Meh. While I understand what they were going for here, it wasn't for me. I can watch stupid movies and enjoy them most of the time but this one just felt a little too silly to really make me feel like I wasn't wasting my time. I still finished it, but it wasn't anything I haven't seen before. The end sequence played out a lot better than the first two acts however.
Gunpowder Milkshake is a vibrant, all-girl action flick full of energy. It does seem to struggle a bit to contain all of it but, does a decent enough job in turning it into an enjoyable, off-beat take on the new action aesthetics. Good characters, crafty humor, and crazy action sequences to look out for.
Girl Power. Enjoyable quick paced movie. Good action :clapper:. Well worth a watch.
Only kept watching to see more of Carla Gugino as a librarian.
This was a bit more violent then I thought it would be, but fun nonetheless. Amy Pond really kicked some serious ass, though the fighting scenes were borderline hilarious at the moments. That put aside, it has brilliant cast, solid plot and it's quite nicely shot followed by some good soundtrack. If they make a sequel, I will definitely watch it. 7/10 from me - Very entertaining movie when you just want to relax and enjoy.
Jane Wick.
I liked it better than the first John Wick, but mostly because it was girls instead of boys, if I'm honest.
The first half of Karens fight-scenes look like she is learning the moves while shooting the scene.
Otherwise the cast saved this movie. Story and script are horrible, the movie is 1:54h long but feels like a shortened version of an action movie.
In part because there are multiple scenes in it where we see someone walking - just walking. Stuff like this is why I always keep my remote at hand watching old movies (so I can skip those superboring parts...)

One of the worst soundtracks in a movie in years and a shameful amount of slow-mo that stinks. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a watchable movie. It has some laughs, some decent action, and some fun ideas for a John wick type flick.
