Even in 2008 this should have looked bad. Now the filming is fine, the acting is solid, the music is charming but holy WOW is the writing atrocious. The screenplay is trash and the dialog is 50/50.
I went to sleep half way through the movie (because it was late) and it was a bad movie. This dude browbeats a girl into letting him live with her and then browbeats her into letting him into her bed. There's nothing romantic about this. It's problematic and weird. I understand a lot of romance tropes are problematic when you put them in the real world and I respect that. I'm completely okay watching them in movies still and I'm fine if they fade away. The thing is in a famously problematic movie like Love Actually they go through great pains to show the romances as adorable or lovely.
In this movie she clearly has ZERO interest in him. He corners her in an elevator and she literally runs out of the elevator to get away from him. She has shown him zero affection or tolerance and yet he still keeps pushing (and winning). But then I watched the second half and there's a fight after an outing to movie theatre and WOW does it get bad. Suddenly now he's entitled and without going into spoilers the movie which was already trending down just spikes it.
A fun cameo by Tom Arnold as her father who likely raped her. But if you look at the movie back to front our main character is the same person. He does the same things as her father. He pushes her, he calls her sexy, etc. He insists that he's making her life better. It didn't click at the time but when the credits rolled and I realized no one was going to grow it hit me and wow that's just bad. There's so much nonsense that doesn't make sense. Like the friend who blows up at him because his building got demolished and he isn't acting squirrely. Do yourself a favor and don't watch this sober.
What a great movie, thoroughly enjoyed! I think you'll enjoy this movie, give it your time and let us know what you think? I'm known of liking crap films, this must be an exception - right?
