Both funny and sad; this is an evocative look at life in 70's northern Britain, with the macho culture of the times contrasting brilliantly with the resilience of one woman trying to do something with her life despite the prejudice of the times. Superb performances from Peake and Considine, as per usual!

Strange that the synopsis, nor IMDB/Wikipedia say it's loosely based on the life of Marti Caine. Her Wikipedia page does though. It was honestly my first thought from the storyline...
